Description
Trepanation is the procedure of drilling a hole in the skull. It is said to increase the blood circulation and improve pressure inside the skull. It is also said to bring out a person's sixth sense, the ability to use ESP, see ghosts, move objects with one's mind. This is speculative fiction based on the concept of trepanation.

Absolutely amazing, really. Really interesting portrayals of human behavior patterns and the characterization of the car boy and the 'doctor' is really strong without being quite in your face.
The art is also quite good; Hideo Yamamoto's improved by leaps and bounds since Koroshiya Ichi. His style's realistic without breaking away from the manga norm, which makes for some interesting scenes. The emphasis he puts on small motions and facial expressions really sets helps the slow psyche-based atmosphere of Homunculus.
It also doesn't shy away from the more 'extreme' aspects of it, and I think that's sort of a defining point in Yamamoto's works. As mentioned: Shoujo fans, gtfo.

This manga is the best thing that ever happened to me.
Okay, that's an exaggeration, but this manga is seriously so good. It's a fascinating look into human psychology, with Jungian archetypes, societal pressures and of course freaky phenomena thrown in. Just awesome.
Basically, a homunculus is a representation of a human being's mind and heart -- a sort of artistic interpretation of the person's soul. What the main character of this manga gains after trepanation is the ability to see people's "true selves" -- to see their homunculi. Whether he decides to ignore his gift or to use it becomes a life-changing decision.
The fact that both the protagonists remain mysterious for so long is one of the main driving forces of this manga. It's fascinating to see their layers revealed one by one -- to find out why Car Boy became homeless, for example, and why the disenfranchised doctor became a -- well, an outcast.
I really am terrified to know what my homunculus would be. But I'm incredibly curious, just the same...

Definitely something special...the characters are awesome, relalistic.
You wished you could see the people around you like the main character
But it`s not something to read in the bus, takes some concentration and will to think.

Very cool. Brings all sorts of symbolisms into psychiatrically challenging situations...
He literally gets an eye to see symbols of different types of madness/moods/thoughts in a person.
Very interesting, anyway. I recommend it.

Homunculus is absolutely awesome. It is an interesting look at human behavior. It dives into the world of human symbols and the creation of barriers within our own subconscious and conscious minds in order to hide and protect ourselves from acknowledging our own self-conceit. Also, the art is really really good. It is so realistic.
Nice one!

This manga's art & story are really realistic (sometimes creepy), so I don't think shoujo manga's fans would like it. ^^' Nonetheless, it's worth reading. I wanna know how my homunculus looks like. ^__^
