Well, it's really a good read, I think. I mean, yes, the beginning is all sorts of jumbles of characters, but once you actually get an idea who all the characters are to begin with, the story line flows on smoothly. The evolving weapons are also not "suddenly in 5 days I could do something mashed up together that took everyone their whole lives to make because I'm so smart" thing. I don't like that, so...OK, whatever.
The story might seem boring at times, but that's only [I think] because it's one of those "in between-ark chapters," so naturally, it's more boring.
I like how the mangaka slowly goes one by one cover the character's history. It's really interesting, if you ask me. Especially the Kanda ark. That's a big one (as a fan of Kanda, I was kawing and gawing over everything [in the recent chapters].)
Some people don't like the art style. OK, well, I mean, it's changed, but doesn't Allen (in my point of view) look more HEALTHY? He used to look...really ill (maybe mentally cracked [JK]) and well...pitiful. Let's leave it at that. Plus, is the drawing style really THAT bad? I mean, come on, it's not horrible...
Also, the art (again). The fuzziness. Yes, I understand the confusion. But there's not a whole ton of detail, so you really don't have to read it once or twice over again. Plus, you can tell who's who by the words and stuff (and by the drawing, it's not HORRIBLE, as I've said. Actually really good.) OK, one more thing about the art. D. Gray-Man's been on hiatus because the mangaka hurt her wrist, so it might be a little shaky and stuff. In my opinion, she's doing really good. Plus, she probably really wants to keep the manga going. (Also, if it's quick, at least it'll keep going. If it stopped for a long time [making a "good quality manga"] maybe she wouldn't have sponsors and whatever helping her. Then it'd STOP.) Back to the point, hurting your writs is a big one for a mangaka, and it'll be really hard for her to come back to the original drawing. A little change won't hurt. Plus, it puts a lot of pressure and strain on the mangaka to ink the stuff and reach ultra high-critique standards. Did I mention this before? SHE HURT HER WRIST.
*o*

Messy

D.gray-man was a good manga to begin with. It might take you a while to really get into the mood but it pays off in the end. The characters are well developed and it isn't just fighting, there is a actually story to it. The story is also very interesting and a bit deep but not too angst, albeit it has his moments of pure angst, but thankfully, those are rare. It does have alot of fighting, it is a shounen after all but the story does seep through sometimes and the characters aren't mass-production clones, except a few. But its also a bit depressing as the protagonist doesn't have a huge arsenal of atomic bomb at his disposal and if someone might say that this will end like every shounen does (big battle - hero wins - happy ever after) I will seriously doubt it because the protagonist has a seriously disadvantage and its also very realistic at the same time because good things dont always happen to good guys.

But D.gray-man has been on hiatus for about three or four times already and it took the mangaka about three or four months to come back last time. The art style has also drastically changed since the beginning. The beginning was a bit round but was generally good as you could see what was going on and who was saying what. The recent art style is extremely messy and you cant comprehend what the hell is going on. The drawings are overlapping and the screentones give you a headache. You need to reread everything at least three times before realising what is going on.

Its serialization started in april 2004, same month and year as Reborn! but reborn has spanned 25 vols, while D.gray-man only 18, caused by the mangaka going on hiatus. You can blame the mangaka for going on hiatus because you'd rather have a good and late manga than a lousy quick one but it's easier to outgrow a series that hasn't published regularly.

So I'd say that starting D.gray-man is you're own risk.
The story is interesting and fresh, the characters are also nice (and bishie, almost everyone) but its now serialized in jump square, so you'd have to wait a month for a manga that's hard to follow and fries your brain.
Read at your own risk

at first it was great, but it went downhill like others have said but has rised up a bit in previous chapters and I am happy about it! I hope it will be as good as it was before and I hope I can enjoy it like I used to smile

I wasn't expecting much from this manga. The first 3 or 4 volumes were not that great. But I kept on reading and tadaa! It became awesome. I don't know what other people think but in my opinion the art became much better too! D.Gray-man is funny, addictive, exciting, original and inspirational. The plot is great with many twists. The characters are very likable too. I can't get enough after finishing the latest chapter. ^.^

I'm starting to think that its actually not Hoshino drawing this manga at all... after the hiatus because her wrist she just accepted that she cant draw anymore and got into a big slump, so she just passed the whole project to her assistant(s) who gambled on it, but lost, cause the last chapters are just terrible. Its caos. Where are the beautiful fighting scenes? The fine art? This could be explainded with the wrist problem, if this was the oly problem. But the style, the story and even the characters changed so much that I just cant believe that this is tha same mangaka who started the whole story. I'm dissapointed, and Im so sorry that one of my fav manga is destroyed.
