You'll want to make the deal with the devil to have Sebastian as your butler.

I've had this in my waiting list for a while but never bothered reading it thinking it was all about how it was a peek in a butler's life, etc. Man, I made that mistake. I finally came to reading it after seeing an anime on this and it's really good. In terms of wackiness, it's similar to Gintama but Gintama is wacky in of itself. The manga still retains its own wackiness, Yes, there is subtle hints of BL in there but it's tolerable. BL is not the main focus (Thank god! I am female but there comes a time in your life, you want actual plot than crappy stories meant for pleasing your hormones). The comedy is fantastic, there has been many scenes where I laughed out loud, especially when concerning the supporting characters (The gramps is my favourite). You'll grow to love their faults. The main character is not whiny, a major plus. He's probably the most mature 12 year old I've ever seen. After reading this, you'll wish you made a deal with the devil to have a butler like Sebastian.

Without spoiling too much, I'll just say the author knows how to write and entertain her readers without making it seem repetitive. She's done her research on the period and wow, it's really well done. The art is very nice on the eyes. Another major plus.

So what are you waiting for? Check this out! Don't put it off on the last minute like me.

I usually determine how much I like the manga by the protagonists and art. In this case I feel that Ciel Phantomhive is definitely everything I'm looking for in a main character. He's the kind of character you can't help but fall in love with. Kuroshitsuji definitely has it all. There's no bullshit romance, no shoujo topics, and no ecchi. The only character I disapprove of is Elizabeth, but she gets better throughout the story. It reminded me of Nabari no Ou, even though they are in no way similar. The art is alright. It's not overwhelmingly great, but much better than tolerable. The reason "tolerable" is used is because there are certain manga where the art can only be described as impossible, or intolerable. Manga is what puts food on the mangaka's table, and pays their rent; in other words their livelihood, so they inevitably have to do it well. I open a manga with mind that the art must definitely be good. More simply, it is an expectation, and Toboso did not fall short of it, but did not exceed it by much.

It is great, though, to see Toboso Yana do something other than yaoi, I like that Toboso keeps improving and will likely continue to do so, being only 24.

I really like this manga. Aside for the great art this has what a lot of other mangas lack, fantastic character development! The realism put into the characters is refreshing and it really helps you connect with the characters. The relationships are well thought out and they are really the corner stone of this manga. What little action it has is done to perfection, enough to get across the cut-throat world Ciel must survive in but not too much to draw attention away from what is really important. In this the perfetion of Sebastian is an absolute neccessary.

The comedy and light-hearted arcs are a refreshing change from the dark drama and, pointless as they may be, are entertaining to read nevertheless. The dark theme is well captured to contrast this light heartedness with a great use of shading to potray mood and danger. The slow revelations into Ciel's tragic past are enticing and each chapter's cliffhanger ending leaves you practically begging for more.

All in all a very captivting and well thought-out manga. I agree that Count Cain is darker and less comic but Kuroshitsuji isn't exactly light-hearted. A very interesting read but a slow plot line. If lots of action and the entire plot revealed within the first chapter is your thing then this won't appeal but if character development is your thing then this is a must-read.

I personally loved it (no shonen-ai or shota people sorry -_-;). I like the artwork, and I like where the series is going. I am also very happy Yana Toboso used 'Jack The Ripper' for this, she seems to have done her homework and I recommend this manga (soon to be anime) to anyone who needs some NEW sort of series for their collections.

@zetsuie: ripoff? how is it a ripoff? have you read through the whole series yet? are you one of those ignorants who justs looks at the cover and reads the summary before judging a manga? what were you expecting? Naruto or something? if you don't like it then don't bother commenting here, though it's called 'freedom of speech' you don't have to call it a ripoff and not give us FULL details.

this is an awesome manga!
the story is very original. you wont find it in other manga! far better than anime version.
i dunno why, after read the manga, i hate the anime version which is bad.
Ciel is so adorable and Sebby is so dependable.
the only question that left is, will it end with a happy ending or bad one?

great storyline, great art! The butler is just too perfect! XD

Well, for those who say this manga has bad plot, perhaps you should try to read ARIA, or REBORN. Be prepared for massive lack of plot... And huge boredom.

I personally think the story is good, as it reveals Ciel's past slowly and how it became dark (kind of horror and mystery) manga. The plot is yet to be revealed, not that it's that much necessary. Take a look at some manga who has its goal revealed right from ch1: Naruto (I want to be Hokage) or One Piece (I want to be Pirate King). lol. It's been 40+++ volume and both of them are not even near to completion.

Some stories like this is good without even a clear line of how far the story has actually been progressing. Like, Vinland Saga. Berserk also doesn't have clear storyline at the beginning. Claymore (the main char's goal is to kill Priscilla, but I think they're not going anywhere, lol)

So in conclusion, I think the story is good. I'm looking forward for the next chapter <3

For yaoi/shonen ai lover: Sebastian x Ciel is haaawt <3 <3 <3

I know this manga has a lot of fanbase..but I'm just expressing my opinion on this manga..

Spoiler (highlight to view)
Srsly ppl, the art is epic but the plot is kinda 'OFF'!!
I've decided to stop reading the chapters cuz some of the chapters are not supposed to be in that plot cuz it's so DETACHED with everything!

Examples? then watabout the whole 'Curry Cook-off'...the Fenching..(in between the Indian Prince arc..) and the whole cross-dressing (in between jack the ripper arc)... there's some more 'wasteful' chapters which are arguably FUN to read but you will eventually realised what's the point of having these to go with the main plot? or are there any 'PLOT' to start with??

and yea. Sebastian's hawt but.. what's the point of the manga? Is it juz bout him being a Good..Kickass-Perfect butler? or is it revolve the Phantomhive family n that Devil curse??

Personally, a good manga doesn't necessarily had to have Cool-looking character or a strong theme.. it should also atleast be RELATABLE to the main plot. Kuroshitsuji does have both qualities of having a Strong Victorian era-like theme and interesting characters but sometimes, the mangaka should limit on how the story-telling revolves around that victorian setting and the main plot/arc of the manga.

Godchild is a better manga than this..(not just the character, but plot-wise..)

Well..that's just me.

Duchess Cain: You and the others are absolutely correct. Kuroshitsuji is absolutely NOTHING like Hayate. It's really annoying that anyone could make such unbelievable comparisons between the two and believe me, I've read both. Hayate features a young boy whose parents were such selfish irresponsible gamblers that they left their own son to pay off their debt to the yakuza, but instead Hayate in a moment of complete lack of sanity decides to kidnap a girl that's only slightly younger than he himself is... on his bike. She turns out to be some rich kid and is kidnapped by two thugs (from him) and he decides to kidnap her back and does. And he ends up being hired as her butler. That's basically just the beginning... don't wanna spoil for those who want to read it.

Kuroshitsuji is about a young master named Ciel and his perfect butler, Sebastian. Sebastian's so perfect, he leaves the rest of Ciel's staff in awe and he can fight off enemies in even the most seemingly impossible of situations. At first glance it seems a bit fishy and you're right... there's a dark secret that basically holds the answer to the question of Sebastian's powers.

That said, I loved it when that was revealed and I think it's quite interesting. However, the plot sometimes got stale for me... I didn't really enjoy the parts where Sebastian was pulling off his amazing feats for Ciel's guests and it only gets more interesting later as the series progresses. I also hated Ciel's fiance. Don't get me wrong... the girl's obsession with "cute" was funny. Her making Sebastian "cute" was also funny (especially after you learn the truth about him and go back and read that part. Do it. Do it.). But she just got on my nerves with her attitude and the excessive obsession and she wasn't really that cute/pretty imo (but that's just me). I don't know how Ciel could stand her, but I guess she gets better a bit.

It's not near to being a favorite on any level, but it's also not bad and it has its interesting points. It is, however, much better than Hayate (which I found to be not really all that fun to read and more of an annoyance, really). The art in both are below my standards. Yes, I have higher standards than most. Kuroshitsuji's still the better one art-wise, but I'm just picky. I doubt the art of Kuroshitsuji would bother most people at all.

I picked up volume 1 when I saw it it the bookstore because it intrigued me. After volume 2, I was hooked and have since read more. It started out mild, but picked up by the end or volume 2. It's dark and I love dark stuff. Some readers apparently had a problem with the way the story arcs were put together - but i didn't. it's different than other styles, but good. I do agree with previous posters that it is a good read for anyone who likes Godchild or the Cain series. I like the characters, especially Sebastian, and find them refreshing from the common fair. I would definitely recommend this one. My biggest complaint is that Yen Press is so slow putting it out in English. I guess if I really want to read it faster, I'll have to buy the Japanese volumes.
