All right, there are a lot of mixed feelings on this series mainly because there are lot of people who think that because something is popular it's automatically bad. Death Note's plot is amazing, really great and creative. There are certain types of people who may find it boring though, and also a lot of other things (after a while) get mixed into the plot and things get a little confusing. If some things were pulled out to make Death Note less complicated it could've actually (thougn some people say it went on too long) gone on longer. When it first came out in America and had the first chapter in Shounen Jump, my first reaction was "How could this possibly go on for even a whole volume?" It found a way to go on for 12/13.
Like I said, good plot, gets confusing, uh, there are a few cool characters and some you get attached to (but with a lot of them you shouldn't get attached for too long, haha), and overall, is a manga that makes you think.

Ok, this one is hard to talk about...
I was expecting so much more, because of the fuss about it.
Even thought i think its a "must read", i dont think its worth all the credit that people gave it.
I think kira was cool at first, but then he got boring.
L is the greatest character for shore!!!
Mello and Near are both zero appealing! They were such plain so-so characters.
And Misa, please, i hate her so much! How can so many girls adore her and cosplay her? just because she is pretty and wears pretty clothes? is that even a reason? Shes such a stupid manipulated girl, almost to the point of giving me pity... Im a great fan of shoujo girls who are about to give anything for the one they love, but misa is just brainless! They say love is blind, but in death note love is mentally handicapped!
I liked the mind games though...

A lot of people have commented on how great and wonderful this story is. About a guy who finds a book, that when a name is written in it, the person dies. Essentially, a psyhcotic murderer finds the book, and proceeds to use it to become the greatest mass murderer in history. Claiming to be serving justice, and to be reforming society, all he is doing, is killing those who he deems worthy of death. The back and forth between him and those hunting him is what so many people really like about the series. Personally, I think they could have cut the story down to 2 volumes and it would have been fine.
The ending was the best part, seeing loserboy begging to be spared. Spared the fate he visited on so many others. Overall, there are quite a few mangas out there that are better written and have a much better story. Though popular, this one is a definite pass.

This is definitely a must read. The idea of the Death Note kept me interested throughout the whole thing and even got me thinking of who I'd want to write in it. The only thing that killed it for me was the death of one of my favorite characters and the ending. The ending was very, very bad compared to the rest of the manga.

This is by far one of the best manga I've ever read. Yes, the plot does tend to drag and lose its sparkle close to the end but the sheer brilliance of the power plays, the concept, the writing, the plot and character development makes this manga truly top notch and a must read.
This manga will enthral and entice with it's psychological twists and turns, the dark atmosphere and tone, the lacking presence of a true protagonist. Kira, our main character, is as flawed yet perfect as they come and while it is impossible to sympathsize with him, you cannot help but cheer him on. His persona appeals to the dark, the ambitious, hidden away and inner desires of all of us, unleashed through a chance opportunity to become God himself. There are moments when you cannot help but draw parallels to yourself.
The artwork is beautiful. I really recommend everyone to try reading it. Despite it's flaws it'll leave a deep impression long after you're done.

the first few volumes were the highlight of this manga. A very good read to a certain extent. This manga thrives itself on deep character development that's why the the introduction of the time skip ruined it (for me).

This is the best of the best. I've never seen/read any psychological thriller more intense. I loved every moment of this. To be honest, I was with the minority. I really enjoyed Light's character. The idea of Evil v. Evil always appeals to me rather than the Holier-than-thou goodness v. Evil. I'd like to see more works from this author.

Ah, Death Note. One of the greatest psychological mangas, if not the best (as I have said in others, best is an opinion.)This story is truly captivating, a story of a person who gains an ultimate power over people. In the end, it is a powerful tragedy as well. It is a classic, a must read for even those that can't stand darker mangas. It is a manga that speaks to all about dealing with the darkness in our hearts and what happens if it goes out of control. Truly a great and sad story.

I started reading Death Note even before I came to knew Naruto... it must have been about 5 years by now or something like that. I was frankly disappointed that DN became popular to the masses, because I can hardly stand the hype and the idiocracy of those fanboys and fangirls.
As for the manga itself: The concept is so interesting it's classic by now. There are so many comparisons to Death Note or Light now (like f.e. in the Code Geass fandom) it's almost frightening. But I'll try to talk about the manga instead of the people reading it.
It's well drawn, the story is awesome... but only for so long. I was very disappointed by L's death as well, but I continued to read on, because I wanted to know how it ended. Well, it was disappointing. Not only because L was dead, but because Raito became a monster. At the end, he really wasn't the idealistic schoolboy anymore, but a selfish murderer. I think they should've ended the manga sooner... I adored the anime version (maybe because the second part after L's death is shorter, I really liked Mello and Near in the anime) and that ending, but as for the manga... I mean, the author and artist even admitted regretting that they killed L off.

I like Death Note, it's so interesting and exciting. And for me L is the best, despite all, Light is the true loser who lost his mind with power... Well, i recommend!
