It's so awesome! Right now, this is my favorite series. I hope it doesn't degenerate into meaningless stuff like bleach, naruto, shaman king, one piece etc. *yay*

anime passed scanlated manga! so sad. nothing to do but sticking to anime now. good thing it is not made badly. (Madarao became my favorite character instantly when I heard his voice. Takeharu Onishi ftw!)
aight, back to manga. it is good. seriously. I would have liked the same story in seinen genre, but hey, we can't really be picky. smile and ye, the thing about potential.. it is true. if Tanabe's mind can come up with more unique stories like this one. not to mention, the more you draw, the better you get at it. practice makes a master. or something. (professor of mine used to say that.)
go read it and try to get all the pieces together.

Solid development, will become another classic if...

This series has solid development as the characters are carefully written into the plot and there are so many interesting questions about Kasumori, the characters and even the villains. Unlike many other manga, the scenes are well-crafted instead of random scenes splayed across various chapters and pages.

If Yellow Tanabe continues to churn out Kekkaishi with such brilliance, he might one day overtake Kishimoto in terms of popularity.

A 7.0 for now because the beginning was a little rocky and I've yet to read much of the series yet.

One of my favorite mangas. The storyline is great, characters are awesome, especially Yoshimory who bakes smile (I bake too, so I just love that character).

Likeable characters

The characters are well developed and very real (i.e., they have good and bad points). Yoshimori for instance seems on the surface a very brash guy but his cake fetish shows how much he cares about Tokine (very cute). The story is slow in the beginning with an episodic format to flesh out all the characters and situations but once it got to the first real story arc (kokubourou) I was on the edge of my seat. It dealt with typical shounen manga issues like loss and revenge in an admirably mature manner. Meanwhile, the mysteries continue to grow and evolve. I would describe the story as "unfolding" rather than being tacked on or appended as is usual in the "long drawn-out battle of the week" type manga, keeping you intrigued about what lies ahead.
One of the great things about Kekkaishi is the number of similarities I see with Togashi Yoshihiro's YYH with respect to how battles are carried out as well as the general subject matter. Fights are more about tactics rather than pure power (I hope the trend continues) and the demons are not evil, just not human.

Just like Naruto-- Kekkaishi is a MASTERPIECE
by Daedalus

Phenomenal series! I likewise agree in my history of reading manga, Kekkaishi is simply one of the most underrated manga ever. Yoshimori and Tokine are fantastic well developed characters who are easy to route for and at the same time admire for their desire to escape their families' fued and obligation to the Karasumori site. Their are many components of this similar to Naruto but it is surprisingly original. Yoshimori is the typical shounen hero...he shirks responsibilities at times, he is looked at as being a loser and he wields an incredibly amount of power amongst all Kekkaishi. On the other hand, what I like about this series (which places it firmly alongside Naruto in my book as one of the Best Manga of all time) is how it takes it's time in presenting the story and pithcing many genuinely interesting mysteries for the series. Is Yoshimori's brother possessing evil intents? Why do Tokine's and Yoshimori's families hate each other? Where is Yoshimori's mom? What is Gen exactly (ayakashi in general lead to interesting questions much less than the hybrids that are Gen)? What's up with madarao? and lastly, what is the secret of the Karasumori site and what has brought forth this kabal of evil ayakashi? On the Naruto site, there are many haters there...people from around the world who actually are upset that everyone else (non-nerds, non-manga readers) have discovered Naruto and are now discovering Manga. They have tried to attack Naruto as slow and never changing to which they will probably never like Kekkaishi however, I think they will--these are the same people who like One PIece (truly never changing), Bleach (truly horrible storytelling) and Fullmetal Alchemist (slower than naruto and kekkaishi combined). Kekkaishi though for those looking for original concepts, beautiful artwork, awesome battles, and engaging characters with a methodical confident plot will absolutely fall in love with kekkaishi.

Pretty good shounen series. Likeable & interesting characters, funny too, solid art & designs, very good foundation, though it's really hard to tell if it'll become great with only 4 volumes of scanlations availabe atm.
Something I'll keep watching. An anime-adaptation could create better awareness of it too.

Average drawing, but boardering on creative I think for the story. It is interesting and funny. Traditional in the cat fights between childhood friends. Cute, and worth a read, but definately nothing spectacular.
