I wasn't expecting to enjoy this series. The art style is kind of...old...and the story seemed cliched from the description. I'm glad I still decided to give it a try, though! This work reads like a fantasy contains very deep character development, fascinating plotlines, and a rich fantasy world! Perhaps not a series for everyone, but definitely worth a try!

Because of all the positive comments, I decided to give it a try. I struggled through the 1st ch because of the art but the story got interesting in the 2nd ch. By the 3rd ch I knew I would keep reading it. Especially because you figure out Shuri, her love interest, is the Red King who she is trying to kill. And he is trying to kill Tatara who Sarasa actually is. The ending's good too from translations I read but I'd still like to see it scanned at least up to volume 25 chapter 2 so I can see the ending. They can skip all the side stories and the last two volumes that are made up entirely of side stories if they must.

This manga is so awesome that I had to go buy the remaining unscanlated volumes just to finish it! They were all recently released in english by viz and it was totally worth every penny. A great story about love, friendship, growth, overcoming adversity and simply how to live life as an individual person. It's one of my favorite mangas and its seriousness, comedy, overall message together beats out any other shoujo I've read in the past. I wish I could continue reading about the world of Basara forever!

Basara is one of my very favorite series. The art in Basara might throw you off at first glance, but once you grow accustomed to it, it's really got its own charm. Enthralling action scenes, interesting characters at every turn, romance that isn't too sappy and extremely well written. Also, even though Basara is quite long, the story manages to not drag on, which is nice. Other series by this author like 7 Seeds and Chicago (plus I imagine anything else she's written) are worth reading as well.

the story is balanced, the artwork is good and the flow of the story is sooo hooking! (don't know if it's a word "hooking" LOL) all in all 9/10. 10 are for those who reached their limit so i think 9 is for best...

I originally did, which is why I stayed away from it until now. After much egging from friends, I finally started it--and I was completely hooked! great action, great plot, likeable characters, romance, and ass-kicking female lead! Wish they had more mangas like these nowadays...

As all the volumes have been published in France I can say it for sure Basara is definitly a must when it comes to Shoujo reading. Personnally I find the drawing sucked but apart from that, the story in itself is wonderfully told. Though it is also a love story it's mainly a story about love, hatred, forgiveness, about how to build a nation of the people and for the people and how to accept each others differences using the past to build the future and not to keep on resenting and fighting. It's a wonderful lesson in the belligerous society we actually live in. Wish there were more shoujos like that.

this is a wonderful series that really makes you think about the value of lives and love. it is wonderfully drawn and i suggest that anyone who reads manga should read it! but there is one problem though. this manga isnt completely scanned and atops right when the story is reaching its climax. it leaves you sad and feeling incomplete because you never got to finish he story.
