Ya know, I have always hated shojo. Probably still do. Something about the super-naieve, innocent, 'come and get me' heroines really just bugs the crap out of me to be frank. On top of that you stack the manga with a half-wit beauty for a male lead, whose only purpose is to inseminate the main character, makes me sick to my stomach to be frank. They only character development you see in that is the same rinse and repeat method an attempted rape scene followed by some male character saving the girl. Comically, you can compare this rape scenes seen in many shojo's easily with the 'power up' developments of shounen mangas.
All in all, from Bleach to The Girl who leapt through time, any work of fiction is based on conflict and resolving that. This manga seems to do all that through its humerous diaglogue and crafty characters, without the need for either steamy scenes or fight scenes, bent on forcing the main character to some sort of life-changing realization.
I am glad to call this manga the first shojo manga out of probably 20-30 that I've read past the first volume, and been able to stomach. Well perhaps i shouldn't even call this a shojo manga because it insofar, has not used any of the major shojo plot devices. I've read only 2 volumes of
this manga but I can tell the rest is surely great. I dont think anything I can summarize here will do this manga complete justice. I just gotta say this is a great hit for everyone, its really got some GTO - moral fixing issues, with continutal character development. I mean Yukino is a person who has the brains, and guts to actually fix her own problems, and it doesnt take hundreds of chapters also --- amazing. I mean, who in real life hasnt felt the extreme isolation, and pride it is to be at the top of 'something'.
I also love the author's sense of humor, she just really knows how to strike a balance between a serious moment and a comedic one.
Great manga, instant top 10, I'm looking forward to finishing the series.
10/10!

I started reading it like 4 months ago, then had a big pause around the middle, and i started reading it again two weeks ago.
I read the volumes one after the other, and what i can say it that , to me, it definitely gets more and more psychological than an actual comedy the more you read on. And that's definitely not a bad point I can tell you^^.
The art gets a slight change around the middle too (i think it's the eyes or something, there's definitely a change though). I loved it, even though i had juste got out from School Rumbe (which is TOTALLY different) so it was hard at first, but i got used to it.
Too bad it's not translated in french, but that won't keep me from buying it as soon as i can

The artwork in this manga is really nice, however I didn't really get into it. Maybe because I am not fond of this genre, I found it kinda boring, however I know it is rather popular, I just didn't like it. Good for all of you who did, but I don't intend to read more of this manga.

This one has it all...... all genres packed in one fanstastic epic manga. The OVA dvds are worth buying. Just to keep for a rainy day.
This was my gateway shoujo manga. This is the one which started it all for me. Honestly don't think there will be another one like it. I don't like Tsuda-san's other works but I do love this particular work. Kare Kano will stick in your memory. Especially the ending, which leaves room for a sequel. Let's hope so, Tsuda-san!

In fact Kare Kano is really great. Yeah, maybe you get bored after the 4th or 5th volumes, but it's still great. If you don't continue you will deeply regret it. The plot is somehow so realistic and emotional, that you really will begin to think, that it isn't a regular manga anymore, like a movie or so. Cuz' the characters will grow physically and mental. How they try to solve their humanly problems. Very interesting to observe.
The art in the beginning isn't that good, but it grows to be very beautiful. The emotions are so very well drawn.
I think very highly of Masami Tsuda, she did really great.
A must-read.

This is one of my favourite stories. It was actually pretty interesting, and was one of the first Shoujo manga I had ever read. Despite being a male, I enjoyed it quite a bit. The romance behind it was lovely. The comedy was great. Quite a dramatic story. I enjoyed the artwork a lot as well. I liked how the story conveyed the emotions of both leading characters, from both their perspectives, though it mostly focused on Yukino since she is the main character. It could have done a better job showing Soichiro's situation in the latter section of the story, but it was still good. Being quite a lengthy story, it gave a great chance to develop the characters thoroughly as well as give the setting a real place in the story.
I'd recommend this to anyone who likes Romance.

Personally, I think that it's not one that I'd put on my favourite shoujo list despite the fact that I'm collecting the Tokyopop published graphic novels (I believe in doing the right thing and supporting the people who bring us the manga). However... if you're reading this comment then I suppose you'd want to find out a bit more.
- Story -
The story basically focuses on one particular group of friends but the main story focuses on one couple. It starts off pretty interesting with the relationship development between the two main characters, Yukino and Soichiro. You could say that they go through some tough obstacles that you'd expect in relationships (although, whether you'd think it is realistic or not is up to you). To create some more interest, you also see the relationship development of other characters.
The focus of the story is basically relationships between these characters and how they'll try to make their love lifes work (whether they fail or succeed, I won't tell =P). While I think the story was written pretty well, there were some events mingled in which I thought were somewhat unnecessary.
-Artwork-
The artwork is nice and combined with the story, it sort of gives me the air of "Nana" - serious and realistic (sort of). Although, Karekano doesn't really reach that degree that Nana does.
I think that it was because of the artwork that I eventually lost some interest due to the monotonous feeling that develops by volume 5-6. I suppose that is the result if you're more used to having very animated characters such as those from Azumanga Daioh.
All in all, I think it comes down to personal taste. It wasn't quite for me but I'd say that it wouldn't hurt to give it a go.

Well executed and well written. Character development and interaction is more complex and interconnecting than any other manga I have ever read. Likely the best of the shoujo genre.
I find its only con being the sometimes jarring disconnect when "chibi" characters are used to alleviate tension.
