Description
A girl stranded in a small lakeside village deep within the mountains, Mitsuha, and a boy caught up in the oddly orderly chaos of bustling Tokyo, Taki, begin to dream of another, unfamiliar life. Before long, they realize that they aren’t dreaming at all, but actually switching bodies. Separated even further apart than they ever would have imagined, yet still somehow inexplicably connected, they search for the truth behind their strange phenomenon and discover what really happened on that fateful night when the stars rained from the sky.

Superbly Moving, Incredibly Poignant

I basically read this novel from cover to cover in a single night, and stayed up until the wee hours of the morning to do so (which I almost never do! I go to bed early every night, but I couldn't put this book down.) The plot itself is good, though it's made of things that have been done before (think Freaky Friday meets The Lake House) but what absolutely blew me away were the characters feelings of love, security, and devotion to each other against all odds. These two shot me right through the heart, and its the emotional insight that really puts this story in a league of its own. I have not yet had the privilege of seeing the film adaptation, but I am eagerly awaiting the blu-ray release (as soon as I finished the book, I pre-ordered the movie right away).
For the curious, the movie and the novelization were worked on concurrently. They tell the same story, though one was not adapted from the other, and according to the author's notes, they compliment each other as the novel is written in switching first person POVs while the movie is in the third person.
If you like romances that are deeply meaningful on a spiritual level, and not at all shallow or taken lightly, then I highly recommend this book.
