Description

Azuma and Takayama used to be really close friends as children, until one day Takayama disappears to the USA without telling Azuma. Unable to forget about Azuma, Takayama returns years later and enrolls in Azuma's school. He finds his old friend cold and unwilling to restart any kind of relationship... but why? Takayama is a light hearted, happy guy who gets along with everyone around, even though Azuma's odd behavior hurts him. Azuma is cool and distant, and seems not to care about anything around him...

Ok so when I read this back in highschool I thought this was a pretty great manga. Now, around 10 years later I think almost the same but at the time I had not finished it.
I really enjoyed the story,, the characters even if they were a pain to look at sometimes lol. The art got a t better even if I think it was good from the start. But ultimately the end was a bit of a shocker, it didn't feel like an ending at all. It's like you realize there are no more chapters and that's it lol. Oh well it will still remain as one of the memorable stories from my younger years. Was nice to read.

I have to disagree with most saying that it's too slow paced. I find it nice to find a bl manga that focuses on characters rather than cheap sex scenes and repetitive, weak plots. It's like Komatta Toki ni wa Hoshi in its pacing and character focus, and I like that sort of thing. I may be a tiny bit biased when it comes to Demian Syndrome, as it was one of the first BL manga I read back in the day. The main character, Jo, does get injured and sick a lot. The injury part could be seen as over done, but I just see it as Jo being a clutz in most cases. As for being sick a lot, that isn't overdone, imo. I have asthma and get sick all the time so it's not an exaggeration.
To sum up, if you want a BL manga that focuses on the characters instead of plot, then give is a try for sure. If you like a quick read with ungratifying character development look to the hundreds of other BL manga out there.

This manga used to be one of my favorite shounen-ai mangas. At the beginning. At the very beginning. It started out very nicely, I liked both characters and I didn't think Takayama was weak, in fact I always liked that he was strong and didn't seem like a girl (how it's the case in a lot of other shounen-ai/yaoi mangas - why write about two men if one of them is nothing else than a whiny girl?). But Demian Syndrome was different. Well, at least for me. Maybe Takayma was physically weak (especially when he was young), but he had a strong personality. And the angst was interesting and not sooo heavy. I liked it a lot that the main characters knew each other from the past. There was a special bond between them and some unresolved issues.

I don't know when it became so.. annoying. I really don't know. But like Suiren-nyan (see below) said, there are just too many accidents, it's repetitive. Not to mention that there was a critical element in the story (don't want to spoil) which was very intense and... cruel, so I really wanted to know how both main characters are resolving it and... yeah, I got disappointed. The author could have done better.

Regarding the side characters: I found them interesting at first, but now... I don't care about them. They also became pretty lame like the whole story. I get the feeling I did read about such characters many times before.

Overall it's not a bad read (at least at the beginning, maybe the first two voulumes), but it's leading to nowhere.

After reading 10 chapters, I'm getting seriously annoyed.

The main character. Gets hurt or sick. In every damn chapter.

Seriously, he is like some annoying shoujo heroine who just keeps getting in trouble, getting hurt, fainting etc. so other characters have to save her/worry over her... Add to this that the guy has a huge emotional trauma because of the past incident and used to have a pretty bad asthma (as shown in flashbacks, oh joy, even more of poor!Takayama). Sorry, but I can't feel sorry for him. This is just annoying and ridiculous. His chara design/hair doesn't help the impression that he is an annoying girl. He supposedly is strong (a good fighter, somewhat "wild" etc.) which actually makes things even more stupid... Just admit he is an idiot who can't make two steps without breaking his leg or head, an idiot who doesn't know how to dress properly in Winter (so he can get a cold and others fussing over him again) and move on. Geez.

I'm not dropping this manga (yet) despite my annoyance and dislike for the main character because I like Azuma and Yuki (is he mentally unstable? kinda reminds me of Masao from Mars), I'm curious about their relationship. Not that I'm expecting much. Even if there is some Yuki-action, it's probably going to be interrupted by Takayama falling down the stairs. Or something.

**edit; ** After reading up to the 17th chapter, I'm raising my vote from 5 to 6,5. Takayama stopped getting hurt/sick all the freaking time, later Azuma gets more spotlight when it comes to this

(...motorbike accident... caughing up blood... falling down the stairs...) , which makes the main character less annoying, but still spoils the story. I mean, all those accidents. Not only it's unrealistic, it also seems like a cheap trick to make things dramatic and the characters showing affection. There are many ways to get this result, many more interesting, unique ways. When a character gets a fever for the 5th time, I, as a reader, really don't get the "you poor thing!" feeling. It's just annoying and silly.

As for Yuki... He turned out to be different than I expected (he cannot be compared to Masao at all), but I really like him. His side story was cute and explained his reasoning and circumstances very well. What I dislike is that in the later chapters there no longer is Yuki in the story, the roommates changed, new characters are introducted (which I'm totally fine with), but so far I don't even know who Yuki shares with. Azuma is his idol, yet we don't get to see Yuki showing concern because of all the bad things happening to the guy "he's always watched". I have an impression that the only reason Yuki was in the story in the first place was to help develop Azuma/Takayama and make things dramatic. Okay, they are the main characters, it's their story... but, if Yuki suddenly gets "kicked out" because he is no longer needed, nevermind what we were told about his character before, then I'm sure I don't like this.

I read all of it just in a day but I understand that it was dropped!! or not?? can somebody tell me where can ı find next chapter!!
and this manga is surely complicated cause it is psychological but I really like it.First of all I think art is really amazing all character have got different features.You can feel their emotions and thoughts.
Story improve slowly but it is long term manga so it is pretty normal.I think if you bored light-lovey dovey mangas you should read this one.

This is literally one of my favourite manga that I've loved and re-read many times. For some it may seem irritatingly slow or boring, but that's just the slice-of-live nature of the story. Although there are many similar BL stories, none have characters as lovable and well rounded as Jou and Azuma. The two have an extremely complex and deep relationship, and the both of them are very realistic characters who do stupid, silly things and the way the author really draws out the daily life they live are part of what makes them such good characters.

Be warned if you like big plot twists and drama-filled stories, this is probably not for you. This is a slow building story that rests on the complexity of the character's personalities and the simplicity of their day-to-day lives. The 'rape-is-love' is not as shallow as others may think, and not explained until later, but that is the nature of this story, not everything is explained right away or shoved in your face.

I didn't really like it. The characters weren't very unique or engaging, the emotions were a bit stale, and there was way too much filler rather than actual plot or character developments.

Also, I don't like the (unfortunately) typical occurrence of rape by someone who "loves" the character in stories like this. That happened here as well and so I quit reading (although I wasn't really enjoying it before that either).

I don't recommend this story. The most interesting thing about it is the basic premise, and even that isn't nearly enough to make it interesting.

Irritatingly Complex

Man, this author's good at overcomplicating things. A lot of unnecessary details and events. I wish she could have just gone with a more direct route with the plot. Instead of keeping the reader on the edge, because of the complexity of the story, the reader is instead left uninterested.

Well, all complaints aside, I actually love the story and the characters. I wouldn't react this much if I didn't like the manga. The main characters are the most effectively conceived characters out of all mangas I've read. The author really dug deep to their psychologies and in a way that the reader can still relate to.

The dialogue boxes are also something to look out for. They're all over the place. Most of the time, I don't know who's speaking or how the flow of the dialogue should go. I'm always left confused.

But then it got extremely slow and extremely boring. I get it that there should be character development and so on in this kind of story, but by the gods, move it along! I'm on chapter 10a (which is more like having read 20 chapters at this point) and the story is excruciatingly slow. Trying to muddle through exactly what the story between the two main characters is supposed to be literally gave me a headache. I can't recommend this and I really want those hours of my life back that I spent on this thing.

On a side note, the art is okay.

this awesome manga! I mean it give me all kinds of emotion and even gave me a churn in my stomach. This is how good it is. so try it event though it kind of stresses me whenever takayama is chasing azuma and azuma keep trying things to runaway and make takiyama give up and if that happens azuma will do something to boost takiyama's confidence and make him chase over him again which a cycle that has been going on between them that made the story make me want to pull my hair sometimes but still. i like it make me think that there is a reason why azuma was doing those things like to sort out his feeling about what happen in the past when takiyama wasnt with him.
