I think the message that this story is trying to convey is meaningful. Nam, no matter what adversity he goes through, is still able to stand back up. On the other hand, the Dark Mortal is an escapist method to help you block the pain and make you stronger in a fake way. The ending was very emotional
because Geon was still the selfless big bro that he always was since the very beginning. Honestly, the big brothers of the webtoon were the MVPs: Geon and Jinhyeok carried this story.
I liked this story enough because it was sweet in that sense, not to mention short enough.
But the storytelling and the portrayal of the character development was quite flat, not to mention confusing. Realistically speaking, how is a Dark Mortal possible? It doesn't explain the science behind it, and so we are left with knowing that
some people died and became things that made people stronger, and they had to be contained in a ring..
. I'm not okay with blindly accepting details that do not make sense. Not to mention the weird shift at the end
! where it somehow took a theatrical theme and Dark Mortals somehow relate to masks. All of a sudden, Green Eyes became a good guy when it felt like he was a hidden protagonist the entire time. And of course, it's never explained how he is so strong.
I'm all for twists, but this didn't sit well for me.
The love development... was non-existent. There was an attempt to explain it, but it is super weak. None of the girls even had to be in the story, if you think about it. Again, due to flat storytelling.
The art was just okay. Sometimes it felt disproportional as bodies were bigger than the heads. The way faces (mouths, in particular) were drawn was often quite weird.
Action scenes were not very interesting, and one of my peeves is how unnecessarily violent this webtoon is drawn out to be. Not sure if anyone knows what I mean, but I feel bad because I feel like I'm ranting now, so I'll just stop here.
All in all, I did enjoy the story enough and I appreciate the author for sharing this with us. 🙂
