I have to be honest, I was a bit disappointed by this series (the prequel as well as this). I like the characters a lot, and especially all the flashbacks of Itsuki and Hisame as children were hilarious, and several characters had interesting back story... but everything was so disjointed, often making me feel like I must have missed something between the end of one chapter and beginning of the next. Also, it had the potential to have an awesome plot that was really intricate and it didn't go that way, sticking more to short comedic effect, but then it was weird because some parts were rather serious and not comedic at all. It felt a bit like a story that was caught somewhere between taking itself seriously and not taking itself seriously at all, and as a result I wasn't sure how to take it either.
I was also hoping for more character development/advancement in the main characters after reading 6 volumes of them, but everyone ended nearly the same as they began. I'm especially sad that the back stories weren't worked with more. Hibiki and Shion's back stories in particular were really interesting and although we saw more of Hibiki, for some strange reason, it felt like the past was taken more seriously and therefore was less spastic. But even the cool things happening in present time were barely focused on before moving on to another random plot line. It was like reading 6 volumes of extended 4-panel comics.
Also it was kind of weird because it was sort of set up as shounen ai but it wasn't actually shounen ai. I'm not really sure who the target audience was for this. Non-BL lovers would probably not like Itsuki's obsession with Hisame, but BL lovers might get disappointed by Hisame's continual disinterest in reciprocating.
That being said, again, I really did like pretty much all the characters, and I love the character designs, especially Shion and Hibiki. I loved how many twisted characters were in it and how unrepentant they were about it, contrasted to Hisame as a nicer person. Itsuki and Hisame kept making me chuckle as a pairing. I wish there was another volume or at least a oneshot with these characters, but one that actually dealt with things instead of sweeping it all under the rug at the last second. As it was, I kept finding myself thinking that I hoped there were doujinshi that continued different thought processes or storylines so I could see further along the different options.
