Description

High school student Ooishi Kyou is afraid of women.

Suddenly, five girls confessed to him. Among them, four are creatures called Koibami - beings that devour human romantic feelings. If he has his romantic feelings eaten by these girls, he will never be able to love again.

However, he cannot abandon the feelings of the one who confessed to him for real - Kyou decides to find the one he truly loves among the five! A brain-shaking, romantic comedy suspense begins!

Captivating, translation was a huge letdown

This is one of the most thrilling manga that has ever captivated me to follow. It's a splendid mixture of romance, drama, comedy, and a thrilling mystery.

I love how, as the story develops, the character dynamics with each other always shift, and none of the characters, even the MC, is as simple as they seem; everyone seems to have their issues they tackle with, their plans they use, and their mindset which differs from each other, which is astonishingly executed, it's not everyday you get to find a manga or even show where every character(Including the side characters with barely shown) is depicted as an individual with their motives. The mystery isn't as big later on, but overall, the seamless turn from a romance detective-like story to a story of betrayal and characters finally revealing their masks is such a breath of fresh air. The MC starts as a shy person, and grows to be a better "Boyfriend" along the way, so do most other characters. It's one of the best.

It's pretty clear I am not the only person pointing this out; the translation is undervaluing this fascinating series. As I'm reading, the translation has grown to be better, it would be nice if some of the earlier chapters were re-translated with proper vocabulary and tenses.

First I'd like to thank Furby, Px, and Solaire of Terribly Incompetent Scans for taking a good crack at this difficult series. I think this manga shows promise and I'm pretty sure it's going to be animated in a couple of years. That said I would recommend holding out for an official translation.

On the Translation

The stiff translations and minimal localisation changes make hard reading and is pushed over the edge by strange and frequent noun adjuncts. "Real one" in reference to his "True/Real Love/Lover" and the unnecessary "Feelings" in "Love Feelings" are good examples of direct translation making otherwise serviceably translated dialogue too confusing and uncanny to follow.

What to expect

This story doesn't lean on the mystery of the girls identities much; the author is more interested in the forbidden love relationship dynamic between Love eater and human. If you're expecting a love-threatening battle of wits between gynophobe and man-eater... you won't find it here, however you won't go home empty handed. Koibami Shoujo is a small story about a small question, and from what I can tell, it's going to be a lot of fun to ponder. Give it a read and see if you agree
