Description

Unexpectedly great

I really ended up enjoying this after coming into it with low expectations. I found it super enjoyable from start to finish. It was cute fluff in season 1and really picks up in the 2nd as all the foreshadowing from season 1 comes together. Overall, it wasn't super deep, but it also wasn't mindless dribble with an over-powered, overly-perfect 2D FL like so many other manhwas. I couldn't put it down.
Based on the summary and early reviews, I thought it'd be the typical story of smart but incredibly oblivious and big hearted FL inexplicably falls for ML with too many red flags for comfort and excuses his manipulative toxic behavior. But it wasn't!!! praise hands 🙌
The FL has a healthy dose of skepticism and is very observant of the red flags around her. She doesn't let the ML get off scot-free for lying to her. They have open, healthy communication where the FL clearly states what about his actions made her unfortunately. So refreshing
The healthy friendship between women previously pitted against each other because of a boy chef's kiss breaking the narrative by tossing aside trashy boys who don't appreciate or respect you chef's kiss the plot twist at the end chef's kiss the discussion between two female characters about how there is no excuse for domestic abuse chef's kiss
I'd say definitely worth the read and sticking until the end.

Could barely get through season 1

Applies to season 1. Couldn't get through to season 2...

Lackluster/non-existant plot. It wholly centres on the couple with no real challenges to their relationship.
Fast paced romance. Mostly because he rushes their relationship without asking what she’s comfortable with. Neither of them have anything really going on outside of their romance. Feels driven by a weak romance between 2D characters with no life or purpose.
Unbalanced relationship dynamic. Never feels like they're equals.
He feels like the adult treating a child with candy and gifts and flowery prose while she blushes and stammers before meekly agreeing. While they are in a romantic relationship, he is her employer putting him in a place of power over her. Although, of course because the whole romance is based on a false identity, she doesn’t know.
Cookie cutter love interest: 'perfect', handsome, possessive, obsessive, his life revolves around her, rich, no flaws or significant weaknesses (other than his constant habit of lying)

With a very traditional mindset, “I’ll be the breadwinner and take care of everything so my wife doesn’t have to do anything.”
Sounds sweet but basically strips her of her autonomy and control of her own life. If also just means she ends up relying on her partner for everything because coincidentally she has no one else to rely on

Innocent, naive female protagonist. So, so clueless.
Everyone around her talks about humans as if they aren’t themselves human. Her ‘government offical job’ includes transcribing cheesy love letters and folding origami hearts. She overhears a conversation her husband has with someone else where he acts completely differently than he usually does. The person her husband was talking to disappears into dust when her husband rushes to where he had been hiding (while ease-dropping) She finds out her husband can use magic but had never told her. She has a suspicious conversation with a local town-women that makes her question whether her husband is actually the son-in-law that he was introduced as. A compass-like tool measuring dark energy from evil creatures points to her husband. Someone who works in the actually government palace couldn’t find her husband's last name in the offical royal register. The cuffs that weaken evil creatures sparks at contact with her husband and causes his skin to blacken. And still…she lives in ignorant bliss and doesn’t ask further questions. That is some serious blind faith.
Zero communication. And so so many lies!
-- He lies about his appearance (revealed rather quickly)
-- He lies about his job as a government official.
-- She states she wants to be a social worker/government offical. Then he ‘helps’ her study for a FAKE government offical exam to get a FAKE job as a government offical that HE created (as the devil) so she would be near him (she doesn’t know he’s her employer).
-- He lies about where he goes (because he’s hiding the fact that he’s the devil)
-- She finds out he lied about going on a walk and spends days anxious (she seems to at least subconsciously know he’s lying about a lot but she’s living in denial). Then finds out he can use mana accidentally when someone else blurts it out. (Why isn’t he telling her himself?!) She then assumes he’s a mage. She’s rightfully angry that he kept this from her for so long (keep in mind they are married already). But he‘s happy because he thinks she knows and happily accepts he’s the devil (she still thinks he’s a mage)

He promises not to lie to her anymore but:

At the start of the story, he had someone introduce him as her brother-in-law, Edith. Then when she ends up talking about the real brother-in law getting married, he hypnotises her and gets her to say she had two brother-in-laws but it only half works. She gets suspicious, realising he’s never talked about his family or the fact that his supposed brother is getting married but they never really finish that conversation.

(And yes, she does tell him that she’s from another world)

So much miscommunication…
It took a whole 43 chapters (the whole of season 1) for those lies to finally unravel!

Reading this was nice and I stayed with it to the end. The way it turned out was completely unexpected and yet I really really loved the concept. It was a breath of fresh air.

The promotional comic raised my expectation for no good reason

Literally nothing happened after the FL meets with the ML. Sometimes a whole chapter is spent with a conversation which content is just the rehashing of the same points, only put in different wordings. I thought that not having a noble/royalty setting would be a refreshing change but nope, might as well take place in modern days and not some transmigrated novel.

Maize, Yse/Eith/Izu and Yoon Soo-Ah... Just amazing. Unique plot twist, this is just second time when I see author in her own book world in person with "power to change world" way and this is much better solved but still both are amazing. And I love this.

A good romance that doesn't gloss over issues

I quite liked this story. The main couple are fun and they carry the story. However the actual plot gets a bit weird after awhile and I wasn't that invested. However I did like how it resolved certain things regarding a certain shitty ex.

ML who sabotages FL for "love"

I could not continue reading this after seeing how trash the ML was. He makes light of her goals, ambitions, and desire to work under the pretense of "love" and wanting to be with her. He does not take her seriously at all. It is degrading. Although it's not explicit, his actions show that he sees her more as pet to posess and play with, than someone he would show respect to. It's absolutely disgusting to see how he manipulates her.

There is a real world case that bears similarities to this manga in the aspect of manipulation. A clarinetist, Eric Abramovitz, applied to a once in a lifetime opportunity to study abroad under a highly prestigious teacher, but was rejected. His GF consoled him. But it turned out, she sabotaged him. He was actually accepted into the school, but his GF intercepted the email and rejected the offer. Then she impersonated the school to tell her bf that he didn't make the cut. She did this behind his back because she "loved him" and didn't want him to go abroad. Absolute trash behavior.

I hate individuals who do stuff like the above. I cannot root for ML at all. Completely ruined the story for me, so I dropped it.

The story does have an interesting rival country related plot that really only starts at season 2. However, the manipulation and possesiveness of the male lead is just so much. And the female lead is so dense and oblivious. I understand why anyone would drop this series. But honestly, i think this is a fun series to marathon, though overall the story is not that highly rated.
