Description

From Square Enix:
Traumatized by a childhood incident with a friend who took exception to his love of traditional dolls, doll-artisan hopeful Wakana Gojou passes his days as a loner, finding solace in the home ec room at his high school. This manga was complete hogwash from chapter ~50 to 95, but it finally picks up to be about the relationship between the main characters.

Sono Bisque Doll is an oversimplified implementation of the old school "opposite pole's attraction" romcom concept using "fashion" and "cosplay" as it's main narrative drive.

Visually speaking is a 10/10.
Initially, it was developed as an standard romcom manga with strong comedy and slice-of-life attributes, but at some point, it would start to hop between all different kind of topics not entirely related to the main argument (not even related to the main couple)...

80 chapters into it: Sono Bique Doll is not a story about romance anymore, it forgot how to be funny, it's just drama most of the time, bits of slice of life and tons of ecchi fan service...

Chapter 106:

The amount of nonsense drama is on the rise... main couple' bipolarity is hard to explain and out of character... useless drama is just and excuse to keep the serialization dragging as long as possible at this point... Dropping...

Was great for 50-60 chapters, then somewhere after changed genre from rom/com and cosplay to just cosplay and drama with a glacial pace in both release and content. Probably going to stay that way till it gets axed or ends.

the manga doesn't focus on Wakana and Marin but instead focuses more on the fucking side characters that NOBODY cares about. and there also the crossdressing BS. fuck this manga. don't waste your time reading this.

This manga has everything: comedy, drama, romance, fan-service, beautiful art, great characters, slice of life, cosplay community, real crafters and artists, and many-many more great things.
At first it is a normal manga, then evaluation is increasing and eventualy arises to rate of 9,5 (IMHO). However chapters 97 and 98 made me realize true genius of FUKUDA Shinichi. That is incredible! This manga has a lot more great things, but those two chapters alone are taking it to the realm of masterpieces! Thank you very much, FUKUDA Shinichi, thank you very much, dear scanlators! I am a happy man!

The intro chapters like the first 30,40 its was good, but i start getting annoyed by the protagonist. Everytime the femc does something a little proactive, he would turn on his virgin sensors and make a huge deal about what she is doing. Like bruh, if she is, lets say, changing clothes in front of you, knowing that you are there, you can turn around and just go on your usual business. No one would just change in front of someone they did not trust.she trusts you and is not making a huge deal of changing in front of you, she can tease you sure. But u sjouldent go full blown nuclear saying like "omg why are u changing im a guy ur a girl" etc etc.

Other than that , the romance is subpar, like it feels that after mc does something for a girl, they fall in love with him instantly, cause they saw how hard working and shit he was when he was making a costume.
I can understand respecting someone as a result of their work they did for you, but falling in love is over the line. As well as even though they fall in love, they do not say anything to mc, they expect him to understand the clues that they like him, regardless of the clues are intentional or not. What clues do i mean, when you talk to them, they blush, they call you at late hours of the night only to say i love you literally a minute you close your eyes. Like bruv comeon

Overall the manga does excell at one thing, which is talking about cosplay, the other things i mentioned here are the things they do poorly

Good quality manga, but I think at crossroads

Honestly, I don't think this manga needs an introduction so i'll keep it short; art if great (above-average for a modern manga) Gojou and Marin are believable characters.

The story up to the last arc was enjoyable and fresh. However, in the latest arc (the one with nuns cosplay), things sort of slowed down and got focused a bit too much on cosplay and - honestly - got stale.

yes, this manga was always (officially) about cosplay, but it was a vehicle which set up and moved the plot, and that plot was Gojou and Marin's interaction and Gojou's growth and socialization.
This has made the manga interested for audience who weren't into cosplay per se, but wanted a good story.

But this latest arc focuses on cosplay so hard and so much and so thoroughly that i feel it lost it's freshness.

There might be a reason for it tho. i believe that plot-wise the manga has reached a level where it has sort of painted itself int the corner. Namely, Marin understood she likes Gojou (who's annoyingly dense A F about everything). there's only one proper way forward, but this would at this point mean effective end of the manga, so i suppose the manga-ka didn't know what to do so just started hammering on the cosplay thing HARD.

Which is a shame, because I think here ARE things that need to happen. For example, make Gojou grow.

I have a problem with Wakana Gojou as a character.
OK, he's introverted and antisocial and had a trauma, OK I get all that. And this is all good as basic setup from which growth is to happen. But in my opinion he still doesn't really grow.

For example he is still under sway of that ONE SINGLE incident from his childhood, even though there's no-one ever who says anything negative about hina dolls as the manga progresses.
in fact, no-one ever looks down on him for any reason. on the contrary, there are many people who respect him and consider him important, and none more than the brightest-shining girl in the school!
So how he STILL chooses to be under the sway of one single incident caused by one brat from x years ago is beyond me.

And it's also kinda disrespectful to people around him who respect and love him, actually. All the time spent with them, all the things done, and that screaming brat from his childhood STILL tips the scales? come on, man!

secondly, he is a healthy male. we know this because... we have seen him. And that's OK. We know he is attracted to Marin in THAT way. That's also OK.
so, how HE is not in love with (or at least romantically aware of) Marin as a (very pretty) girl is kinda... hard to explain. But if i tried to find a reason for it, i think the reason would be that his self-esteem is still so low in the gutter that he can't dare to even like her. Which is, again, a rather pathetic response which shows zero growth on the inside.

And all of this would be OK as starting something he improves on. But, it doesn't get addressed, which is a shame. so, instead of cosplay boot camp, perhaps a Gojou personal growth arc wouldn't be bad.

Kitagawa Marin's Cosplay Adventure

A neat manga with decent pacing and development. If I had to guess, the two MC's are probably going to stay friends, and that's fine with me. Not every manga has to be Ase to Sekken after all.

The central mystery though...

Who is "Non-chan"? My first thought was that it was Kitagawa (and her child version looks quite a bit like her), but then when Akira was introduced I thought it might be her. Either way, there's no confirmation yet and really, it strikes me as a behind-the-scenes motivation for Gojou to do what he does

There is quite a bit of fan service. And it's a little weird that the manga is in the same magazine that Bitter Virgin was in.

Also, as with a couple other manga I'm reading that have recently been licensed, I can't stand the English name for it.

Small Update: I dropped my rating because the last arc and the current arc are incredibly underwhelming and not up to the previous standard set by the mangaka.

OK, there isn't any real way to get around how bad the first handful of chapters are, BUT it really does get much better!

In fact, by chapter 15, it actually gets sort of good. There's still a lot of pointless fan service scenes, including a lot of sexualization of a middle school girl, but it actually gets really heartwarming and interesting. I'm sort of glad that I stuck it out =)

Update: Things got way too drawn out, and I was forcing myself to read it like it was a chore. I finally dropped it at c90...
