Part 1:
Arienna is the village wise woman, and a woman of many hats - midwife, storyteller, fortune teller...
One day, she is falsely accused of being a witch and charged with inciting a rebellion.
As she wallowed in despair, before her appeared her childhood friend, Prince Simeon.
Arienna was overjoyed to see a familiar face, but the man before her was no longer the kind boy she once knew.
Now, he was "The Loathsome Prince" whose ruthless actions earned him the nickname, "The Beast".
He informs her that she has been sentenced to death.
Distraught, Arienna begs for her life, but Simeon has a proposal for her.
Bear his child.
Trusting her old friend, she accepts his offer, but little does she know what lies in store for her.

Part 2:
Falsely accused and sentenced to death, the wise woman Arienna is imprisoned in the royal dungeon. Once friends, she now finds herself at the mercy of Prince Simeon -- a man feared throughout the land as the "Loathsome Prince."
Simeon offers her a deal to escape execution: bear his offspring.
To survive, Arienna agrees.
Thus begin their quiet, aching days together in the depths of the dungeon.
But as the days wear on, Simeon's visits become fewer. A harsh winter drags on. Troops are stretched thin. Tension rises with the threat of foreign mercenaries closing in on the king. And Arienna's execution date looms ever closer.
Tormented by it all, Simeon's heart wavers -- until one day, he notices a soldier holding a small woven skylark.
"It's the prince's skylark doll. Arienna taught the village how to make them."
It's the same doll Simeon once taught Arienna to make -- crafted from straw, a memento of a more innocent time.
Cradling that memory, Simeon returns to her cell at last.
Meanwhile, the foreign mercenary Adan draws dangerously close to the unstable King Dryden... with a plan for what to do about Arienna.
