Description

Ryotaro is a boy who loves robots and lives out in the country with his three sisters but he's headed to Tokyo for high school. Before leaving, he runs across a humanoid military robot and has a fateful encounter with its pilot, a cute teenage girl who calls herself La Vie en Rose. Ryotaro will almost certainly meet her again in Tokyo, considering his family connection to the production of these humanoid robots--his father worked with them.

Entertaining, but gets incredibly extreme in the ecchi department

I have to say, I actually feel kind of sorry for Matsumoto Drill Kenkyujo (MDK) sometimes. He's had a long career of 10+ years, yet this series was his first to last beyond one volume because his series are always canceled due to being too graphic or their magazines being discontinued. After MDK's Konohana was canceled in Champion Red Ichigo due to being too sexually explicit, MDK created this series as a reboot of sorts (its basic plot has some similarities and it seems to be a continuation of Konohana's overall plot, and this series' shortened title is even KonoHana... talk about confusing, eh?).

This series started off like it could be any shounen mecha-type series with a little bit of ecchi stuff. It was entertaining then and I was actually impressed that MDK managed to make a series without relying on erotic scenes. But as it turns out, the magazine this series was running in (Sakura Hearts) was scheduled to be canceled shortly after volume 1 of the series was released, and in what I can only assume was a last ditch effort to stay alive, most of the series in the magazine became very graphic. The magazine was eventually canceled, but its series were continued in a new magazine (Comic Heaven) which may be even more extreme.

And so, by volume 2, this series is now close to Konohana levels, showing completely uncensored crotches (male and female) and introducing the main character's phobia (?) of pubic hair. (Unlike Konohana, however, it actually has yet to have any graphic sex or urination scenes.) Personally I don't think this stuff has hurt the series because the series' overall mood hasn't changed and it hasn't been out of character and I think it has still been entertaining. But I know this kind of thing will bother many people, so if you know you won't be able to handle things like a main character running around naked freaking out about the entire female cast's completely uncensored "jungles" then it would probably be best just to avoid this series. It doesn't have this kind of stuff in the early chapters, but judging by the recent chapters, there's no sign the series will calm back down.

I really wish I didn't have to focus on this ecchi stuff so much in this review, but it's so out there and so prominent in recent chapters that, like with Konohana, it's probably going to be the deciding factor in whether you like the series in the end. The only difference is it gets introduced much later here. As far as the main plot goes, it's quality mecha shounen stuff with some fun characters and an alluringly mysterious main girl. The art is very nice too. In any case, I personally hope the series won't be canceled too soon. It's already changed magazines once, so if Comic Heaven is canceled too, the series' may not have a future elsewhere. I've enjoyed the characters and would really like to see this author have a success for once. So, if you like robot action and humor, I recommend this if you can handle graphic nudity and some crazy nudity-related humor. It hasn't been quite as extreme as Konohana so far, even with the later chapters, but I wouldn't count on the series toning down its ecchiness.
