Description

Trepanation is the procedure of drilling a hole in the skull. It is said to increase the blood circulation and improve pressure inside the skull. It is also said to bring out a person's sixth sense, the ability to use ESP, see ghosts, move objects with one's mind. This is speculative fiction based on the concept of trepanation.

Shapes are misleading, always have been.

As someone who struggled with his own identity, gender, appearance and hopeless nothingness for the future, Homunculus knocks way too close to home. Yes, especially Yukari's sand descent. It's all about the actual grossness of everyday living as a man with an unexplainable burden: not being special nor rewarded. Being alive is not a choice for us, but mere result, and that's a scary, unrelentless thought that can make us rot around as faceless, fetus-like beings. Enclosed in our non-places. Homunculus made me dwell deep inside images I didn't know I still carried around. Those shapes, distinct pieces of suffering. But it also made me a wiser man. There's always another way. Another opportunity to get out of the car, look upfront, and do something. After all, homunculi are just a framework. Trauma can be surpassed; avoidance can be defeated, but you have to put the work. Not only from the incessant closures of depression, but also from your own super ego that, really, always wanted you to be a narcissistic monster. The mind is a terrible thing.

Marvellous and excessive manga, like the human body and its clockwork.

The ending feel like a different genre from the whole manga, also the psychology aspect in this manga is all over the place. The author is trying to make it meaningful.. even though some are gross and miss but like i still enjoy reading it. The gender chapter is pretty good imho.

very strong start brought down by weak ending

Sadly, this manga is plagued with a lot of armchair psychology and a disappointing, rushed final stretch that does some real disservice to the MC's character study overall. However, looking past all that, it also features an extremely original premise, a particularly great art style and at least the first half of it is more than solid and WILL keep you on the edge of your seat.

Great ending (a bit sudden though)

It's starts fine, way more outlandish than the ending. I personally was about to drop it after the sand girl, since it's a bit heavy and the later meta conversations of vol11 bored me a bit, but I'm glad I didn't. After vol 11 the story goes back on track and ties everything down.

My complaint would be that the MC and the sand girl have a grotesque habit.

This is one of the few series, if not the only, that I don't know what I feel about how to feel about. The ending was the most I say that in a good way. But this manga, in simple terms, is very odd. It very much earns the psychological/mature genre tags. Be warned, the ending is,,, interestingly bittersweet, if you will.
If you wind up reading this, also be warned that you will fill like you're on an acid trip. It can get weird, very weird. Even weirder when taken out of context. This manga also deals with highly relevant issues such as transgenderism, depression, and more.
Its a very good read that really deserves more love, so I highly recommend giving it a shot.

Amazing, but real mess

After reading Koroshiya Ichi, I thought this mangaka couldn't dig deeper in the psychological gender. Fortunately, I've been wrong...

As someone said, this manga is a road to self enlightenment. Sometimes you want to be important to someone but you give enough credit to yourself. Everytime the MC sees another Homunculus he starts to realize his own inner demons.

The ending wasn't all bad, but I hoped would be somehow light hearted since the MC had some huge mental issues and he had suffered a lot. When Nanako died because of him I thought he would kill himself but apparently he just resumed his quest to find someone who would see his heart.

Anyway, it's a really alluring manga, but the ending left a bitter taste to me.

Wow...this manga sure was messed up, in a good way. The story was original, but like many others here I didn't get the meaning? I mean, what WAS the meaning of this manga? Was it that all humans are liars and assholes? That you should be true to yourself? That you shouldn't do plastic-operation because you will end up homeless? Every time I thought I had it figured out, I got mindfu*ked and had to rethink my impression of the story all over again.

Honestly though, I didn't like the main character. He was a whiny egoistic asshole. Enough said.

I liked the Ending, it was fitting. So a +1 point for that.

I love mangas and I feel that they are better than anime in many ways, but it is easier to watch rather than read, obviously. I would say that the atmosphere in anime is better, but manga many times draw me in. Now why I said that.. it has been a really long time since a manga made me read nonstop from beginning to the end. It is so rare to find manga's and I started reading after a guy suggested it. But I literally started reading it today (Well kind of yesterday since it is 2am now that I am posting, but you know what I mean) and finished it. I am not sure how I could describe it... truthfully with this manga 1 picture can result with 1000 words. I highly suggest it to everyone, at least up to the point he starts seeing things.

A lot of scenes and moments are disturbing, so if you are a closed mind person I suggest to skip it. It would make you feel unpleasant a lot of times.

I do want to though point out something about the ending that will be a spoiler for anyone that will see it so... if you do not want to see it, don't. I just want to express about not expecting this.

I expected a better ending and I am not talking particularly about a happy ending. Actually with such a story I did not expect a happy ending at all. In the end he ends losing his mind after he finds his supposedly real self. The end was nice to be honest but felt quite unrewarding. Like you read a story of a man struggling to achieve something and as soon as he gets 1 step away from realizing his goal, he dies. (PS: The guy does not die).

It is a shame the ending felt so unrewarding (to me), but then again it was ok and an acceptable ending. I would by no means call this a bad ending.The ending though is the only reason it does not get a 10/10 since the ending of a story to me holds 70-80% of how much I will end up liking the story. But again, it is personal preference that makes me not like it.

I am really glad I found about this manga and read it!
