It’s basically like a typical high school Shoujo manga, except that the MC is introduced as a cool, independent and competent girl. The reader has the expectation that she won’t be be like other shoujo mcs, but instead, she de-evolves to a MC that you see from practically every other high school shoujo. We were made to believe that she is a reliable, more mature character (according to what the mob characters say about her), but she’s actually a regular shoujo mc framed as a mature one. She’s only considered more “mature” because she’s competent; yeah that’s not how it works. We all know highly competent people who act immature, petty, like pricks, etc. Nobody considers them mature. This is very misleading.
If you want a actual independent, intelligent, and mature female mcs I recommend reading:
Okobore Hime to Entaku no Kishi
Villainess Lives Twice
I’ve Become the Villainous Emperor of a Novel
I Want To Be You, Just For A Day
It Looks Like I Fell into a Reverse Harem Game
At this point, I have given up finding mature mcs in high school settings. They seem to be either petty, immature, have a severe case of love sickness and melodrama (symptoms include blushing around ikemen), have little to no character development, or just tropes. In comparison, the MCs in the my recommendation do have some romantic interactions with men, but it is not the focus of the story. They use their intelligence to manipulate the plot, stay level headed, and display their competence. They are all unique, with different goals, backstories, values, etc. These women all have different things to achieve, and romance is just one aspect of the story that enhances the overall reading experience; however, this is the opposite in many high school shoujos (like otome holic) where life events, goals, values, relationships with side characters even, are all neglected in favor of “love”(more like infatuation) with handsome boys. This is not realistic, and makes stories like this dull.
