Description
From Aku Tenshi:
Andou is a high schooler who possesses the ability to force others to vocalize his thoughts—an ability similar to ventriloquism. Inukai is a young man shrouded in mystery who commands the vigilante group, Grass Hopper, which appeared in a city shaken by the downtown restoration program. This is a tale of courage, resolution…and confrontation; this is a depiction of the two boys’ encounter.
"Even if it’s nonsense, if you believe in yourself and face things head on, the world will change."

Let me preface my review with two facts: 1) I'm adult who identifies as a woman 2) I have been reading manga for the last ten years.
The first remark is that this story is nothing new. We have some coward like character being thrown into an environment where ideals are being realized through violent means. The author hopes this trope is enough to place their work as mature and introspective. And, maybe for a younger audience it is, but just having violence as an archetype for a "wrong" method to achieving goals, is actually pretty shallow. A lot of great revolutions and civil rights across countries were realized with violence.
Second, I hate the trope where the protag sees some random girl/woman get sexually assaulted and this is used as their introduction to not be a coward anymore. Like the women's experience with trauma shouldn't be a male character's jumping off point to their little moments of shallow self-reflection and shounen power-up violence scenes.
So basically, the author takes ideas that could be deep or are deep and displays them without any depth. Its just bad, not a 2/10 but definitely not 10/10 rating.

yeah that is how i describe this manga
the characters, the plot, the plot twists and the character growths are just awesome, you have to read all ten volumes to understand this
oh an uncultured person below who had only read the first 18 chapters and came to the thoughtless conclusion that this series is silly and the main character is miserable - i shall laugh at your face with pity, so shallow

There's gore in this manga? I've read all 10 volumes and haven't seen anything gorey, except if you count a bit of blood and some fingernails as gore... And the art is nice, not sure how anyone could say otherwise. Anyway, this manga is good. It's deep enough, but it doesn't spend a whole bunch of time on tireless monologues and righteous speeches about this and that. You get to see the story through the characters actions, which is more my kind of thing. A manga can be 'deep' without characters spending a whole chapter arguing like Socrates or Law 301. The part with the old guy in the restaurant really riled me up and made me sad at the same time because I've thought the same thing as Ando on countless occasions. In all the manga I've read, very few scenes have done that. The way the people in the manga, such as the mobs and the Grasshoppers, act is realistic and a bit scary (even the fickle, gossiping students and random bystanders act realistically). If you've ever seen people mobbing (or attended catholic school haha) you'll know this behavior is not an exaggeration.
This is labeled as a tragedy. I wanted to give this a 9

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
This manga kinda has 2 main characters. The first 7 volumes are Ando trying to put a stop to Inukai and the last 3 volumes are Junya, Ando's little bro getting revenge/taking over where his brother left off.

cause Ando's death makes me sad. Very sad, cause his death was pretty much pointless. And I was kinda hoping Inukai was gonna at least get a beat down...but oh well.
not all stories can be happy, and Junya made me stick with a 10.... Last updated on July 23rd, 2011, 1:13am

i can see clearly that the art is above the average and i have read much worse and i have enjoy it the story is amazing because it revolve around the real probleme of society and mixed them beatifully with fiction element

ok obviously the ppl who made comments so far haven't read past the first 5 chapters but viz has published the first two volumes and i've read 18 chapters not 5
this is for the kiddies...something to impress teenagers...the persons' comments before mine have more depth than the actual manga has...it fails miserably...it wanted to be a good title but there's no real value in it...anything good that the author tries to say is swallowed by mediocre execution...and yes the art is seriously lacking and lame...
as for the gore that's a laugh...you've been fooled there...it's so full of gore that this should have been in a seinen magazine except that it's not even half as intelligent and mature as some seinen titles
the gore goes to such an extent that it reaches glorification and it seems like a blatant exploitation to lure the readers into believing that this is actually good

Describes the nature of unguided democracy and how it always leads to fascism, the process of transition, and the dangers thereof

The author graduated with a law degree it seems, and he wanted to "depict a conflict between a person with supernatural power and a fascist leader", in his own words, perhaps drawing a parallel between what one would describe as "supernatural ability" to what one experiences mentally under a fascist dictatorship--they're both outside the realm of logic, forceful, ungovernable, and irrational. his depiction of a mob-like mentality and how individuals lose their sense of judgement and morality when they adopt a collectivist, mob-like mindset has depths, and it describes quite insightfully the inherent issues of a mob-rule democracy without a properly written or followed constitution. these inherent problems of collectivism and mob democracy have also been studied in many other western political literatures so they're nothing new to the informed, but it's definitely interesting to see a manga with this depth given that the reader understands the message beneath the entertainment. he definitely put some thought into this work, and it seems he kept most of what he learned from obtaining that law degree.

In a dark and disturbing parallel world, the helplessly pitiful protagonist wages a useless (personal) war against a charismatic youth, who turns other youngsters and street urchins into mindless drones to do his bidding. With so many adversaries, it's a wonder why the protagonist is still alive, but don't despair, the protagonist's death seems imminent...

There are no gore scenes, or whatsoever in this manga, but the atmosphere is nearly as black as in Berserk. There are executions going on seemingly casually, making me doubt this was right placed in a shounen magazine.
