Bernie Rose, an aspiring writer working as a waiter, meets Ian Bantley, the perfect rich man, and they've been cohabitating for X years. Bernie wants to have a fun-filled life with Ian, but Ian, who wants children, is frustrated by Bernie's immature thinking. Bernie, who is underemployed, thinks that Ian will only accept him when he finds success pursuing his writing career, and their relationship becomes increasingly strained.

Meanwhile, Lisa, Bernie's ex-girlfriend, is his best friend who listens to his problems and gives him advice, but is unable to solve her own relationship problems.
