The visuals in this manhua simply blew me away! Incredible, deep, rich, with a specific style, this is what I want in my manhua! not he very well made but generic drawing style of most. I cannot stress just how good the artist is!
But here comes trouble.. namely, the story flow, the characters, everything, is somehow disjointed, patchy and not really homogeneous. The story itself has potential, but the writer doesn't really know how to build suspension, nor introduce new characters, nor develop it properly. He just sprinkles bits and pieces here and there, never giving anything the depth it deserves, and uses humor way to often for such a semi serious comic like this. Kawaii faces are okay from time to time, but not in every second panel! So many elements are thus left hanging. Zhang Rong's dragon power, the demon sword, Prince Ning, Empress Dowager, Yan Jifeng's family history... It's just hinted at and then dropped! No, this is not the way you write anything! And since the manhua was discontinued, many of the stuff never gets it's due.
The main couple is okay, just their reactions and personalities are not consistent, but this is very in sync the way the author does stuff, so it didn't surprise me at all, but too bad. Zhan Rong could have been a nuances character who hides much behind his prickly facade, but he ends up a spoiled brat to often - itn's not funny or indeed endearing. Jifeng is a bit better, but still doesn't shine as she could have. Meh, this can be applied to most stuff here! Great potential, but it all just flew by.
Overall, enjoy the visuals and more or less forget everything else.
