well but that was only before I read the whole thing. The death game arc right now feels like out of place if I have to say. Mainly because this setup limit the free flowing fights that has dominated the story before. It also is something that doesn't strike me as something that fits the main villain's character. Also unlike how it was in HxH, things in JK feels forced in terms how the author explain the fights going, and sometimes I had trouble processing what actually happened. That aside, in terms of a shounen that relies heavily in it's combats, I think JK will deliver plenty and in that aspect it is not disapointing.

Shonen done really well.

Almost all shonen I have read had repititive concepts.
This one has it too. But the way it is done is truly great. Fights have great art style and they are very different from normal fights you see in shonens. The story is pretty cool. Overall, this is a very good read.

I changed by rating from 8 down to 5 in less than 10 chapters. Left off at 139, which was great. Shibuya battle is fun to read. Then they start this culling game arc? Edgy and ridiculous.

New standard for shonen manga.

I feel like this manga re-ignited my love for shonen manga. The characters all have unique and interesting personalities and abilities. Akutami even gave the characters their own unique/realistic reasons as to why they risk their lives to save others. Not every character is the stereotypical hero who wants to do everything the right way. I also appreciate that a lot of the female characters are reliable and strong on their own. Gojo is such an insane character.. crazy abilities. I took it lightly when he kept mentioning that he was the strongest sorcerer, but then he actually followed through. It's so refreshing when a character lives up to their title and just gets the job done. Seeing Itadori, Fushiguro, and Kugisaki develop through various encounters and learn from their losses was nice as well. This manga isn't perfect, but I think it's the start of a new era of shonen manga leaving the primitive storylines of past works.

I really don't understand what people expect from battle shounen these days. The story has a lot of criticism here saying that it lacks "substance" and "The characters lack personality and development". But at the same time, I have seen these same criticisms in manga/animes like Naruto, HxH, BNHA but reversed; that is: "it's slow, they take a long time to move the plot, and drag the characters development, etc." And I just don't understand people and what they want from a BATTLE SHOUNEN. If it has good battles, lore, and characters what more do you want? Deepness? Well, not every story needs that, not every story is an Evangelion or Stein's Gates. Different genres, different goals. Akutami seems to just want to tell a good battle shounen, with some subtle comments on society, spirituality, and the meaning of death here and there.
That said, I like good characters and well-developed backstories like everyone else, but in recent mangas, I feel like it's more like: "which one is sadder than the other" just to make you empathize with the characters as fast ( KNY is an example). It's a trope of the genre and Jujutsu also has it, but in my opinion, it's not forced, it's realistic, not that sad, BUT BELIEVABLE, it makes sense in the world of JJK and the "realistic" vibe of the manga; which is refreshing. Even with it's tropes (the battle shounen ones), JJK KNOWS how to develop it's cliches, making it not "annoying" as others have said. That's what makes a good story these days, because, nowadays, almost all the stories have already been written, all the philosophies tested, what remains is a repetition of what works plus your own taste, and if you identify with the narrative, themes and characters, if they make you feel something. Do you ever felt that all Marvel movies are the same in their essence? Rom Coms? Slice of Lifes? BECAUSE THEY ARE, but do you know the difference between a good and a bad movie/series/anime of the same genre? The execution of its elements. And JJK does it exceptionally. The author isn't afraid to use the tropes and that's what I like the most!
The manga is fast pace, but it gives you enough information for you to understand, and then in the later chapters it gives a few more pieces, and you see everything falling into place, it's beautiful. When you think it has a plot hole, the author writes a 180 and you realize that everything was planned.
I LOVE the characters, we have little moments with them, but I felt attached, they grow so fast on you. Itadori is the first protagonist I like in a while and Nobara and Fushiguro are such good deuteragonists!
I REALLY don't understand people calling this shounen "average". WHAT THE HELL IS A "GOOD" SHOUNEN TODAY SO? Y'all only talk about the old ones (which are good, don't get me wrong). But just because today's ones aren't so "original" or "groundbreaking" and uses some of the same elements as other mangas, DOESN'T mean they're "average". Honestly, if I could call a shounen average, it would be (forgive me) Dr.Stone and Black Clover, I think they are good stories, but they do nothing with the troupes, they just use them in an "acceptable" way (5-6-7). JJK at least has good writing and a different take/spin around the tropes, and just for that, it's more than "average". And just because I'm a bad bitch I'll give this one a 9, not an 8 like I thought previously.

Jujutsu Kaisen has an intriguing premise and diverse and interesting characters, but... the execution of all that is just, well, alright. And that's disappointing, because it could be so much more.

average to below average shounen series. i had some hopes at the beginning, but it's become a slog to get through. it's essentially just 140+ chapters of fighting; while MC develops his skills (absurdly rapidly), his personality is woefully undeveloped. i can't bring myself to care about him and his motivations lack substance. same goes for the other characters; they could all be interesting but no effort has been put into fleshing them out. this is made worse by the fact that there's a huge number of characters and new ones are introduced almost constantly. plot is difficult to follow. i think the fight scenes are pretty decent but that's pretty much all there is to the series. art is a bit crude but it doesn't really bother me.

I read a few ch up to the intro of Junpei but the main problem is that everyone at the Jujutsu is too OP compared to well, everything. When I read shonen I'm less here for the big fights vs how does a human copes with being inhuman in some aspects and their consequences on their lives. I don't get a sense of what motivates MC to keep fighting other than maybe his grandpa? He lacks the connection to the others so it feels like he's in his own world.
Someone mentioned it was similar to Kekkaishi but a huge draw for the former is how the MC is still attends a avg HS and deals with meeting friends and losing them to tragedy. He has personal interests and hobbies along with his spirit fighting routines.
Also, I'm aware it's horror genre but the constant violence and gore is off-putting and disturbing not so much as a it's horrifying but just everyone is super brutal to one another to the point I'm wondering well, IDK if I can say I support the good guys vs the bad since they're all kinda the same.

It's a decent manga on it own, but to be honest I would never be a fan of this. When I read a shounen manga like Bleach, Naruto, Hunter x Hunter or recently Birdman, It's much more interesting than reading this which I have to push myself through to even read some of it, I can't bring myself to have any emotion attachment to the character, that's the sole thing this manga failed at doing.
The main character is too perfect in his own way, he keep manage to say to cool thing, right thing all the time, he ace at everything but also very kind and friendly and not at all full of himself, he is like god, this guy is way too cool, I cannot bring myself to like him, and not just the main character, there is 4,5 Gary Stu of this type through out the story, the blind fold guy, the puppet guys, they say thing too right, their power is too op, and no one dare to challenge their perspective or atleast capable of doing it , it become hellla anoying to me, they're made to be the image of justice, of swagness, but to me they're like middle school kids trying to be cool with punch line they learned from some movie, it's cringe. In comparision, this type of person in other manga would either been killed off or get exposed of their non perfect side, those guys are story breaker and should have never been in it inthe first place. In the end, it's just a manga about a group of perfect people living in an echo chamber
