Description
From Decadence:

Mishima, a student at a school in the countryside, is bullied by his classmates. The reason is because he's seemingly gay. In reality, Mishima does like guys so he doesn't resist their bullying, and instead, finds solace in secretly cross-dressing. One day on the rooftop, Mishima finds the lipstick he'd lost before in the hands of Kirino, one of the bullies... and Kirino was about to put on the lipstick that Mishima used on his own lips. This is the story of young boys looking for a place they can really be themselves...

One of the MC looks like he was drawn by Miyamoto Kano and another looks like Light from Death Note.

A beautiful coming-of-age story about three teenage boys with surrealism and sad tones.
The story is deep and moving, the characters are rich in individuality, and the psychological depiction is wonderful. I love the dynamic between the characters and the heavy theme also makes you wonder what true happiness is.

Having finished 2 volumes in one sitting, I couldn't agree more why this title voted as the Top 5 Best BL Manga in the 2014 Chil-Chil BL Awards.

"Smells Like Green Spirit" is truly a great manga that touched my heart. It's a masterpiece that i would recommend to everyone not just fujoshis.

Pleasurable whiplash

"Smells Like Green Spirit" cares little for tonal consistency. It regularly gives you whiplash with the way it moves from slapstick comedy to oppressively dark psychological themes (one will come to mind for all readers). The art certainly shifts to accommodate it's modalities, with some of the ancillary characters looking hilariously goofy at points. Certainly for some, there will be gripes with it's rather classically Japanese jabs at homosexuals, but there is a rather wholesome center to this story. The compassionate, parental love and concern on display is mending!

be prepared to bawl. This manga is a rough read, but so very worth it. It lulls you into thinking it’s going to be comedic with some terrible bullying, and then reverberates in you the darkness and pain that exist in those who feel trapped- all the while, applying comedic relief through it’s exaggerated visuals and ridiculousness. I can only speak for myself, but for those of you who with and ounce of empathy or a connection to the GSRM community, this manga will make you laugh, cry, and enrage you- or at least that’s what I did for me. I do recommend maybe reading this manga with some caution if you are not in a great emotional state or have trauma related to assault or coming out. Not saying don’t read it, because it may do some good, but be cautious and care for your mental health primarily. If the cover art is putting you off, don’t let it because this manga falls into the small category of mangas whose cover art is not nearly as good as the art found inside, which itself is super engaging and beautiful. This manga is truly up there with some of the most poignant mangas I’ve ever read in my life and is one I will most definetely come back to again and again.

Heavy stuff

You've got comedy, tragedy, psychology, despair, hopefulness all wrapped up in 2 short volumes; the story is eerily realistic and the effect is massively amplified by the mangaka's unique style. Can't say I'm completely comfortable with all that just transpired, but that's normal and probably what the author wanted to achieve, I guess, so props to her for this unconventional title both in story and art. I think I still need some time to absorb it, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

I love this so much. I was always on edge, wanting more and anticipating the next chapter. Then the ending came like a bitch slap. I mean... in a sense it fits with the overall story, but for no reason do I find it satisfying. Probably it's a bit too much like some overly dramatic piece of reality? So in the end it felt like nothing changed based on all the things that occurred during the story. To some extent I would almost like to claim that the ending made it feel like it completely erased most of the progress during the story. Had I not followed this manga for as long as I have (3 years) I might not have felt this disappointed, so I think it's a bit more enjoyable if you read it all in one go and don't have the time to get your hopes up.

Also, I'm extremely happy with the extra with sensei! It made me so damn interested in finding out even more about him. I will dream of a spinoff with him and his adventures after he left the town...

its quite a sad manga since the ending is not absolutely beautiful and happy. it hurt me seeing them hurt. the art is beautiful and the characters portray their struggle well. it left me with a hope that this world can be more accepting.

but also very rough. this is the most realistic yaoi I've read and it is quite upsetting most of the time. Even the ending is bitter sweet, but it is more than I could have ever imagined it to be. If you start reading this you HAVE to read it to completion to be able to grasp the entire story and get proper closure. In it entirety, this is a beautiful work of art, but definitely not for the feint of heart.
