From the brilliant Itou Junji, you can't go wrong with his horror. I absolutely love love love horror like this, the art is different and awesome and suits the dark, mysterious atmosphere. The unresolved endings just make the stories more mysterious and spooky. I felt really sorry for Mimi, she keeps running into these scary occurrences, I'm surprised she hasn't gone mental. I wish I owned this in physical copy I love it so much. I hope Itou keeps making manga like this and I wouldn't mind checking out the original novel of which these stories came from..
as with most of this mangakas work
there is no real backstory to any of the stories
no explenations
and its not at all scary
and even if its based on another persons stories
its so weak that i cant enjoy it
Ito was hired to made manga out of the(real)short horror tales collection by Kihara Hirokatsu. The original tales lack of story and character, just an evidence, so the character and plot was create to serve those tales. If you feel this Ito's horror stories slightly off track, that because the initial horror concept didn't come out of his head. (I'm in Thailand, both manga and the book are published here.)
again, a horror manga by junji itou that do not disappoint. the previous commenter do not like the unresolved plot, but it think that is one of its main charm - like real life, things never happen conclusively. i must concur that the characters do not show varying degree of emotion except on the scared range, but since that is what expected of them, it is enough. in the end, this old school style of telling ghost story is good for anyone wanting to read a quick one.
that was laughable...once again junji ito creates characters that feel like they're made out of cardboard....unresolved and unexplained random occurences which supposedly should make you feel scared...
the only chapter that standed out for me was the 1st one (it was a very mediocre story though) because it was more stylish due to the woman next door having a nice chara design (lol)
waste of time this volume was...i don't know how hard it is to come with random scary occurences when you don't explain or justify anything but i assume it is terribly easy...i can come up with a million stories as silly as these...doesn't seem like too much hard work..easy peasy
Even out of Junji Ito's works, Mimi stands out. This compilation of short stories involving a protagonist that seems doomed to always encounter bizarre, scary, ghost situations is the most disturbing and entertaining work of his or anyone else that I have ever read. I truly hope this gets released in America someday so I can properly support him for it, as this one deserves it.
In case you are interested, this work is loosely based on the Japanese TV series and movie Kaidan SHin Mimibukuro. The short stories are taken from the series and adapted to fit the role of the main character, who is the creation of Ito himself, and to tie the stories together. I have not watched the series myself, but I do feel that, from the stills I have seen, this manga version's style makes it much scarier.
