Kaiji #3

Another fairly solid series. This one is entirely about Kaiji playing mahjong against a gross antagonist (can we have Ichijou back?) and the scanlators had some fun with his greasiness in their SFX translations in one of the chapters. I didn't know anything at all about mahjong before this series, but I read a few wikipedia articles and that was enough to understand what was going on. The main knowledge you need is the tile names, but understanding some of the terms was useful as well (like 'concealed' triplets, etc.).

Those people who read the second Kaiji series will be familiar with the two-stage arc (oblivion, then battle) the mangaka likes to pursue with each type of game. I felt that the first stage in this manga lasted too long - rather than appreciating each hand of mahjong, I was impatient for the axe to fall and for the real action to start. Still entertaining though.

What the guy below me said but minus the part about Kaiji being the 2nd best. Fukumoto's nobuyuki's work is much more highly celebrated and acclaimed than Liar Game which is currently on hiatus. After several animes, movies and years of publication, and essentially becoming the defacto gambling manga, it's hard to fault this #1 series. Hopefully an anime adaptation will follow soon for the third part.

Kaiji - Mahjong Arc

Kaiji is the 2nd best gambling/high stakes game manga out there (after Liar Game). It's a masterpiece. The only problem with it is the pacing, and that the author always prolongs the chapters (the pachinko arc especially). This arc was especially entertaining though.

If you do not know the hands/rules to mahjong, it's a bit confusing, so I suggest all readers to get the basic grasp of the tiles and the hands.

KAIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIJI. Holy smokes this is a good series and this arc is no letdown. Tons of man-tears in this saga and lots of mind twists. While some chapters are a bit overdone and prolonged, it is definitely a great read and intriguing engagements between two awesome gamblers/swindlers. Can't wait for this arc to be adapted to anime.
