I liked the mission arcs where she’s off solving problems, but disliked the way angsty romantic relationship is playing out causing me to drop the series.

Beautiful art, awkward pacing
by BepsRose

There's sudden jumps to a new scene that could be days later with no explanation. Very little explanation of potentially interesting things (demon cave) and characters that weren't properly introduced.

It seems like the comic is showing about 30% of what happened in the novel and those missing pieces make the story flow in the comic suddenly too fast and then suddenly dragging.

Interactions/scenes are so fast sometimes that I can't form any emotional bond with the story. It's like the comic is just a high level summary of the novel. It's very jarring.

Also not a fan of the ML. I liked him at first but now after 100 chapters he's just a boringly possessive tsundere who I find annoying, and the way he wants to control the FL is stifling. As if he wants to make her be something she is not.

The Quality of the English Localization Is...
by endlessabyss

Rating: N/A
Unless you follow the original version of the work and compare it to T_p_s' English localized version, particularly its translation, you wouldn't know that T_p_s' English localized version is a hit or miss. And thus become unaware that you are missing out stuff from the story.

(Continue with examples...)

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Lack of effort and care, and understanding of the work seems to be applied to the localization since the beginning chapter because...

***** ...Almost or at least half of the original text/words/phrases:

1) ...Are intentionally mistranslated in which the localized text/words/phrases are entirely different from what the original source/scene said thus affecting (or may affect) the story; and we're not including idioms/sayings that can be difficult to interpret from Korean to English.

Ex.1 --> In chapter 29, when Wolhan, one of the other generals, became embarrassed after Lokheun talked back to her.
Original text: 한번 말하면 척 하고 알아들어야지! 너 계속 말꼬리 잡을 거야?!
T_p_s: Just say, 'Yes Ma'am' and move on! Stop talking back to me!
Should more accurately be "Don't pretend that you don't know what I'm talking about! Why do you always pester people to confirm every detail?!" - anon

Ex. 2 --> In chapter 32, when the emperor came upon a bamboo stalk with lines while walking through a bamboo forest.
Original text: 다들 이렇게 작았던가···
T_p_s: Was everyone this petty...?
The emperor ended his vain talk about everyone else prior to this line and scene. He is actually reminiscing about his younger self and his deceased close family members, so the line is more accurately read as, "Were we this small...?/."

***** ...Have incomplete and/or lazy summarized translations, so details/information are left out from the story:

Ex. In chapter 32, one of the lines in the poem (in which the entire soliloquy itself 1. should have remained in a poem-like format in T_p_s' localized English version 2. occurred because the emperor likes to belt a poem when there is someone or something that is endeared to him 3. occurred during the scene when knocked out Lokheun is resting against the bamboo forest and moonlight backdrop)...
...The original text said, "월광을 흩뿌리는 황금의 달," and T_p_s translated it just as "Shining golden moon," The entire phrase should be more accurately read as, "The moonlight scattered from the golden moon," - anon

***** No inclusion of Asian historical culture/context to the localized translation of the work which the work heavily relies on, so the feel/atmosphere is off, the rich details are lost, etc. In addition, the work is supposed to have a mature-like atmosphere, but the official translation/wording... The choice of words/tone/flow/etc. --if not some-- don't fit or are spoken from the time period:

Ex. 1-> Calling a revered person an "angel" which the word is a Western deity/entity/being from the Western culture, but the work heavily relies on the Asian historical culture/context so the words (to the effect of) "fairy" or "heavenly maiden" would be more fitting instead.

These examples (at the time when writing this review) are among the many reflecting the quality of T_p_s' English localization of the work and need to be fixed, but feedbacks are ignored despite saying otherwise.

If you are reading T_p_s' English localized version, be aware you're not getting the full story/full experience/full package/etcetera of the work that it was originally meant to be.

good concept, poor execution

The premise was interesting and exciting, but I just couldn't see the two leads being paired with each other romantically. I don't know how the FL goes from seeing the ML as a threat to being in love with him. I think if the pacing of their relationship was better and fleshed out more, it would be more enjoyable. But it felt like a relationship of respect and brotherhood all of a sudden became romance out of nowhere. I am not a fan of ML who fall in love at first sight, especially when they are portrayed as cold and practical. It's just uncharacteristic of him. The pacing is the worst part of the manga. Some things are egregiously slow and others are rushed. As such, it's hard to keep up with certain arcs or tension is easily lost.

This truly deserves a larger audience. His not a perfect story mind you, it seems at beginning to throw random things together, but the art is nice, no excessive drama...

Wish this was a masterpiece, but it isn't

As of ch. 72:
I started reading this thinking - hoping - it would be a masterpiece.
It is not.
I almost gave it a rating of nine, but the more I thought about the story to write this review, the more I thought it deserves just about a six.
The transitions between the events aren't smooth and I really missed some fighting scenes against demons on the hell's pit arc.
Furthermore, I still don't understand who was the guy that taught her the face-changing arts or the limits of the said arts(can she just change between her male and female's appearances or does she have others appearances that still haven't been introduced?).

Kinda uncomfortable...

[spoiler]
The fact that the emperor is the male lead and slept with the main character in girl form somehow makes me feel uncomfortable. Although I could clearly see that the Mc has feelings torwards the emperor( as you could see her blushing when he gets close) the emperors inner monologue suggest to me that he cares for the mc sort of how he would care for a son, although, he doesn’t seem to care for anyone else really. So seeing how he treats the mc’s forms (gender) so different personally makes me weirded out. Also, I wish There was more about what happened in the spirit world(or whatever it’s called) because, it’s... pretty confusing. I’m not sure how the face changing art works or what happened with the mantis that looked like an old man who told her to protect the mushrooms

Anyways, the art is beautiful and if you don’t mind mentions of rape then it’s a worthwhile story to read!( although I’m not sure how it is after chapter 39, I’ll be quitting the series because I’m uncomfortable with how it’s going but I’m sure it’ll be good)

disregard cliché ratings

It's a privilege and entitled to say that a series is bad simply because you've already read something similar,
it is disrespectful to the author and to readers who are fresh to the genre.
Please rate properly next time, compare how well it handled the meta,
Are the action scenes exciting?
Is the drama emotional?
Are characters interesting?
Did the comedy make you laugh?
Is the flow of the story confusing?
Is it using too many McGuffin's? Is it so bad that it breaks the suspension of disbelief?
Are the climax anti-climatic?
Are there to many stock characters?
Please rate objectively

Thin, simple, shallow but doesn't waste time

Don't go reading this to get into something deep, refreshing or new presentation of gender bender, historical stories. Personally, it's not much in terms of character or plot development, it's full of cliche and things I have read and seen in popular historical dramas before.

But the things that don't get me bored are that the story doesn't drag (if you read titles like I Became the Duke's Maid - that's pretty much nonsensical drag) and the characters stay in lines i.e. don't sway or divert or do something or have some other characters where you don't root for the main couple or having different ships (this main ship is pretty strong up to this point). This one does it well.

I also give props to a pretty brazen male-love storyline too. I hope that this can go to the main couple too since the female lead is in male disguised. It would be interesting if the male lead also falls for her male counterpart.

So, in recap: this is about a girl whose family was broken. To save her father from being killed for infiltrating the imperial palace to get medicine for her sick stepmother, she traded her life in his stead in a bargain with the emperor who she knew prior (but both haven't recognised each other). They became master and subordinate, she received special training in (some place like) hell and became an imperial general. Because of certain string of fate, the emperor met and healed her in woman form and in critical condition. And somehow, against his cold nature, he felt in love with her at first sight - they both felt in love. But she left the next morning. So began their convoluting hide-and-seek love journey.
Satisfying love scenes, not smutty. With consents (props). Pretty tender and sweet stuff.

Tbh, the "love at first sight" is pretty irrational for me. Says a lot about love of facade. (She is so beauti-fool and I don't know why I feel this way - goodness I cringe!) It's pretty superficial lol. Imagine if commercial manufacturing of a pop product that includes the ordinaries with a thin storyline and developments as this, who'd read? Consumerism is still at great, it's annoying.

But anyway, it's an okay read. They also have mission arcs and stuff, but not too long and straight to the point. Try it to see for yourself.

Edit: This comment reflects my reading progress at chapter 48 English and 88 Korean raw.
