From Kodansha:
As a child, Thorfinn sat at the feet of the great Leif Ericson and thrilled to wild tales of a land far to the west. But his youthful fantasies were shattered by a mercenary raid. Raised by the Vikings who murdered his family, Thorfinn became a terrifying warrior, forever seeking to kill the band’s leader, Askeladd, and avenge his father. Sustaining Thorfinn through his ordeal are his pride in his family and his dreams of a fertile westward land, a land without war or slavery. The land Leif called Vinland.

An excellent series which has a good plot, good story telling medium and a good amount of characters. Art is unique on its own way. Consider it as a 'Masterpiece'. You will surely enjoy it.
Love it

One of my favourites. I hadn't heard about Yukimura Makoto until I came across this manga. The Story is so captivating along with the brilliant artwork that keeps you wanting more. Too bad it's a bit slow on the releases, but I can I understand that a lot goes into making this.
amazing!

this is surely one of the best mangas i've ever read. the art is just amazing, story is undeniably neutral and if i ever start to try to describe the epic feeling this manga's characters give, i won't be able to stop. =P anyway, enough fapping, if you like historic mangas, this is definitely for you; even if you don't like them, you should try this one. =P
only 2 chapters released but I have already fallen in love with it
more a shounen approach from Yukimura but in an unexpected setting
Hear he switched to Afternoon btw, in stead of Shonen Magazine
anyway, think this is gonna be big and I urge everyone to check it out!
Artwork is beautifull and the characters kick ass

A promising historical manga. Art is very good and fighting scenes are really well done. I like character and environment. If it keeps its present level and maybe goes a little more in depth it will be a great work. Lots of potentialities
Promising? Sure!

This is the story about the Medieval era and the Vikings. Based on the historical/realistical side, not fantasies like One Piece. So you can't compare those two. If you've read Planetes, you'll get what I mean.
Right now for the 2 volumes, we got finely realistic battles here and there, but not much explanation about weapons, the culture, or fighting style I'm interested about. We got intense good story instead.
In short, this manga got historical sense, one you would hardly get at any other manga. But since the story is pretty slow, even it feels like just beginning at the end of volume 2, I give the rating 8.

It lost it's charm

Oh, people will not like what I say now, but IT REALLY LOST IT'S CHARM FOR ME. It's not because there isn't so much action at the moment or because Thorfinn became the violence-is-bad type of guy, no, it's because everything what made this manga great somehow... disappeared. I LOVED the characters: Thorfinn, the young berserk type, clueless, full of hatred and just instinct, Askeladd, incredibly smart and cruel at the same time, Thorkell, who was always good for a laugh, young Canute and his very interesting character developement - pure greatness we had there. Especially the interactions between all of them were something I never read before. So what we have now? Snake, a character I cannot say much about, Thorfinns friend... ugh, Arneis... ugh... Ketil... well... People always complain about Naruto and such, because the characters get new powers in every new arc - it's not so different here. I always thought Askeladd must be one of the most powerful people in the world and at the end it seems even on a farm somewhere in nowhere there are much stronger people than him.
Don't get me wrong. I love Vinland Saga and I will read it until the end. It just became like Vagabond or Historie: I don't care much about the characters anymore. Everything became so serious, almost depressing. The first part was sometimes really funny - despite the very (!!) cruel moments. Now... I don't laugh anymore and I'm not excited about it either. When I download the new chapter I sometimes forget to read it and remember it hours later. I cannot blame it on the author. Every story has its great moments, the one arc which surpasses everything and lets the story shine in all its glory. And Vinland Saga had this special moment long time ago.

This is absolutely one of my favorite mangas. I really like that there is finally a manga that has Iceland as a setting, as propably any other Icelandic person...
A little minus for me though is the spelling of the names as Thorfinn should be Þórfinnur or Thorfinnur also Thorfinns father Thors's name should be Thor or Þór the s in the end is the names Genitive case (Eignarfall)

Of the lesser "mainstream" // at least for us non-native consumers // Vinland Saga and Pluto definitely stand out as the best overall works available.
Almost nothing to criticize here, the art is terrific, story is intense but does not lose its seinen qualities, and characters engaging. One downside might be its slow release, but as long as the quality's there I do not mind one bit waiting a year a volume.
Thanks to Yukimura and Mangascreener!
