Asumiko Nakamura probably wanted to create a dark, disturbing psychological manga. It's hard for me to say this, since I like Nakamura-sensei so much, but she failed. The story doesn't sound particularly rushed, but in a way it is, because nothing gets explained. People do things and you can't really understand WHY. Which is already a flaw, but when those things are also disturbing and nasty, well... it's only violence without purpose or meaning. Which is a bigger flaw. The romance is also very random. I can't understand why the two main characters always gravitate one towards the other. I get they have the same name and thus they kind of share the same sould, but... this doesn't really make sense?? Like, the manga should have explained this better. In the end, you should read this because Asumiko Nakamura is a god and yeah you should read everything by her. Buuut, this is not very good. Unfortunately.

If you've ever read a properly written psychological manga, then you should be able to notice the biggest flaw in Double Mints. As hirukayuki01 below me has mentioned in her comment, there really isn't much substance to the plot -- just a bunch of random nasty things the two guys do to/with each other and other people as a demonstration of how twisted they are... and BAM, they're suddenly together with barely any precedent.

The character development left a lot to be desired; especially the protagonist/seme's. My guess is that he was meant to be a sub and/or masochist, but that aspect of his personality was poorly done. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to his actions...which would have been fine if this was your run-of-the-mill BL and not something which goes under the "psychological" tag. If that's the primary selling point of a manga, the mangaka must honour it. That didn't happen here, which is in itself unusual, because she's generally an excellent writer.

If you love Nakamura Asumiko's writing and art style, I recommend J no Subete and its associated series over Double Mints: they're far more skilfully written and characterised while still being dark and twisted. On the other hand, if you enjoyed this manga and are also a reader of F/M romance, I really suggest giving Doctor Du Ming a try -- it has a startlingly similar ambience.

Beautifully twisted and dark characters. There were times when I don't know what was going on because there were too much happening but it still comes out as understandable. I would say that his manga brought me to some really dark psychological sh** and I love it. One problem is, the plot is kind of bland. I feel like they just want us to experience the twisted personalities of the charcters. The story itself was nothing to be hyped about. I'll probably just remember this manga as something disturbing with random plots lol.

Unless you accept that these guys have a screw (or more) loose, the plot seems absurd. Their encounter could have been the beginning of a sweet relationship, but instead it's the beginning of a mess. Did things really need to turn out that way? I can't help asking myself this question, it's a bit painful.

It seems like I missed important details (even if I got insights from some of the comments as well) so I would like to re-read it someday and ponder over this intricate relationship. This is definitely not an easy read.

I knew I'd love this one as soon as he opened the trunk with the dead woman inside. Double Mints boasts a dark and gritty story revolving around two eccentric personas. There's a bit of a power play going on between the two MCs and as the story goes on you have to wonder which one holds more influence over the other.

There's a lot more going on behind the master-slave relationship and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a story with a psychological aspect behind it. The story has a nice flow to it and it never falls victim to stagnancy. The art's different- some may not like it, but personally I loved it.

This one is one of my most favorite that I've ever read!
Some people might think it's really GROSS, STRANGE, TOO MUCH to read. I agree with that.
But for me, it's NOT at all.
If you want to read, you have to prepare yourself into a VERY DARK theme, STRANGE characters, and GROSS acts of them.
Besides, if you are getting into it too much, you will see how beautiful it is.
It's really a tough story. Very ANGST.
I don't know how to describe it, but believe me, Double Mints can make you fall in love with every pages, plot and the characters!
I love this manga so much that I ordered the Japanese book right after I read it.
And, DMG licensed. I hope it will be the paperback, not only the NOOKbook TTvTT

I just couldn't get into this one. The characters were poorly constructed--at least the blond one was. Usually I love Nakamura Asumiko but this is definitely not one of her best works, IMO.

This manga will definitely be one I'll be reading over and over. Unlike the usual fluffy stories on puppy love, this revolves around trust and belief that they will always be there for each other.

The first thing that captivated me of this manga was their eyes. Something so dark yet pulling are in both of their eyes, and I understand what Mitsuo meant when "He murdered me with his eyes"

The intricately deformed relationship doesn't seem as ideal as some readers think - but there's a lot more hidden under all the apparent humiliation and hate. Despite the warped personalities and horrifying feats, in truth, they care for each other, much more than a simple dog-owner relationship, in my opinion. Strongly recommended, although it may be for more of the eccentric tastes.

Not my favorite by Nakamura Asumiko, but definitly one of her best. I liked that the whole concept was so unusual, definitly something Nakamura specialize in.
The art is stunning, the story was deep and well thought and the characters were very original.
I haven´t read something quite like it to be honest.

Recommended.

I love this author's works.. she is great developing characters and story telling.
Personally I loved this- its dark and touches on serious issues, so some will not like this.
The two character's relationship is beautiful and sad. The way they are entwined together by their names and past signifies the deep bond they have. Another thing i liked was how the 'master' was the uke. Anyways, some parts were cruel in the beginning, and warped, but it is what made this a great psychological read.
