I feel I'm not doing Honkai Impact 3 (the story/ game) enough justice by comparing it to Freezing which is frankly a disappointment for a fan of the genre that involve another great in Claymore, but I feel the need to emphasize the failure of one since HI3 has actually a very similar picture early on with Freezing, so contrast between the two is inevitably needed.
As like with Freezing, HI3 starts with bunches of teen empowered female soldiers who fights against Honkai, the supposedly alien entity that has invaded Earth. These soldiers were called valkyries, as with their source of pwoer comes from things called, interestingly, stigmatas. But that's frankly the end of similarities between the two. While Freezing would develop to be a pool of gore, fanservice, and suspicious relationship, Honkai develop into an emotional and exceptional plots with lots of amazing personalities.
I'd like to avoid the gacha aspects of the game and focus more of the story, but it maybe is impossible since the game is, in my opinion, the best media to convey the whole story of Honkai with both comic and short AMV as complements. while no doubt character design takes into account their appeal for the gacha, every released valkyries has strong personalities that accompanies them. The story writting of HI3 is simply impeccable, it's very fluent, and yet intriguing and engaging. While the main character is Kiana, others get also their share of developments and plots, and subsequently scene to shine (in line with their gacha promotion lol).
Anyway, HI3 is a story you wouldn't be disapointed with, if you were someone who were disapointed with Freezing (or any of similar work in the genre) and wish for it a better plots. Again, I had to restrain myself here not to promote the game, but I feel like the game is perfect media for anyone to fully enjoy the story and the universe of Honkai.
