It's a surprisingly good, really cool adaptation from the classic Capcom arcade game, although it has one big, fatal flaw that'll probably move away most of the readers: it was axed during its original publishing and ended with a totally letdown cliffhanger, right at the start of the endgame.
Is it still worth the reading? If you're a fan of the Captain Commando game, yes. You can see the authors' effort for not turning this adaptation into a cheap cash-grab. Yeah, the manga has personality. There's some good blend of over the top action with balanced drama and humor. It has some great art, VERY faithful to the original source. Almost all the heroes have some good background story, specially Captain Commando (you'll even discover his real name!) and Baby Head. One letdown is that Captain acts like a supporting character in some arcs and isn't so strong like in the game, although he gradually becomes stronger. The manga-exclusive characters may be comic-relief almost all the time, specially Sarah, but have their role on the plot and are enjoyable.
I really liked how the authors depicted the villains here. They were really careful to make use of every villain from the game. Even minions like Carol, Brenda and the "Z" soldiers (they turned that ugly alien-like pawns into really cool human mercenaries!) have some good presence and development on the manga. Almost all the bosses are here, from Dolg to Blood, being introduced only for the action to break loose. Well, it's a beat'em up manga, not a Shakespeare play. But due to the manga being axed, they don't make it to the final battle against Scumocide and we barely see him.
So, if you want to read some quick series, stylish action, enjoyable justice fellas, super powered alien people, 90's one-liners, grew up playing the game just like me and don't mind the lack of ending, this sure will please ya!
