Description

From Viz:
Yoshimori couldn't care less about catching demons. Until he realizes that his apathetic attitude is taking a toll on his friendship with Tokine. Just as he decides to take matters into his own hands, a couple of amphibious demons and the pesky ghost of a pastry-chef show up to complicate matters.

I'm so glad this is getting attention now. I remember when there were only like 100 on the reading list tear Anyway, as most people has already stated I'm sure, this is a very unique shounen, or for me anyway. Although I like the pretty boy main characters, I feel Yoshimori represents, "Just because I can be bad@$$ doesn't mean i have to be the hottest character in the whole manga." But sometimes... I do wish he was cuter and had more of a unique trait besides his bad need of a haircut that makes him more noticeable. By my rating, I'm sure you can tell that I love it and can state 50 more interesting things about it, but I'll summarize it with GREAT.

Definitely different from your average shounen manga. I kinda felt that the second half or so was somewhat less enjoyable than the start, but it ends up wrapped nicely.

All in all, Kekkaishi is most definitely a manga that you won't regret reading.

The ending was great. I thought it really suited the overall feel of this manga.

And, now that I have got that off my chest, I would just like to say that Kekkaishi is definitely, without a doubt, one of my favorite shounen mangas. The plot is original and unique, though still with that quality of spirit and energy that make shounens, well, shounens. What really sets this manga apart, though, is its characters.

All of the characters are unique, with their own distinctive personality, all the while having a "down-to-earth" quality that is more realistic than typical shounens. (Apparently, Yellow Tanabe created characters by making them foils of each other. A pretty neat way to do so, I think.) And, none of the major characters are static characters. All of them steadily change and develop as the plot continues. Really, Yoshimori, Tokine, Masamori... all of them experience some truly fantastic growth that aren't just limited to them powering up physically or what have you.

Oh, and, as for the plot, it truly begins to take off after the Gen arc, so if you can hold out until then, you'll definitely be rewarded.

but, having said that, really, you should just disregard what wako944 has said, since he couldn't be more wrong. kekkaishi is far deeper and far better than that. of course he'd make such a narrow minded judgment, having only read 26 chapters, and others before me have mentioned that kekkaishi starts slow, but you know i'm not saying that despite only reading 26 chapters he's not entitled to not enjoy it, since that's merely his experience. but to mislead others, that's what i can't stand for.

Shaggy Dog Story of a Shonen manga

It's one of the few mangas I feel compelled to re-read when I feel tired of the current series and it actually has an OK ending. The main problem as I felt was how they handled the MC's Mother and the final scenes since we never understood why she was so powerful. It could've been covered in the last few vol but IDR other than God Wills It and I swear few line changes here and there MC would've had enough power and training to seal it off 100% on his own.

Also, I felt that in a way that it was odd how serious both their families were towards the MC being the heir, and in reality, he's like 14 y.o. and struggling to not fall asleep in class. I get it but moments like it felt adults never considered how being a teen and being forced to fight every night for your life is detrimental but then again it's a manga. Not to mention his older brother (21 y.o.) gives him a long speech about not relying on power alone but then again... he's a kid.

I liked how the manga-ka handled death and the aftermath of loss on the cast where everyone can die and sometimes there's often no real way for MC to cope with constant fighting. I feel like that too many Shonen everyone dies and we move on to the next scene because plot demands it.

I realize now that it's actually 300+ ch series but it's still very readable and the art is still great. There's a lot of key moments where I just focus on the composition of the scene and the story. Also, there's no creepy scenes with MC and Tokine just no. MC is pretty pure-hearted hero as his hobby is baking cake castles and I liked how the manga-ka handled his one-sided crush that it never goes over board.

FWIW: I watched the anime several years ago and it follows the manga faithfully and I think the battles look much faster in motion so JIC you wanted to see it in a full effect.

Also the Kekkaishi battle system actually made sense in I could understand how people could focus and rely on it unlike a lot of other manga where it's STRENGTH OF WILL = POWER UPs.

Final Thoughts: I have to admit the final vol introduced way too many characters and it would've been much better if they just focused on the MC's family and Tokine's family instead of splintering into side antagonists. I started to feel tired as I realized yet another new character is introduced and how it tied to the main story.

Also, if they had cut down 1/3 of the story and removed the Shadow org plot it'd be much more concise and less confusing but dreams.

Although it start slow its really great. I really love the unique fighting system which despite some people said actually IS IMAGINATIVE... And I do acknowledge as someone said it doesn't variate from the plain system UNTIL the later 200+ chapters, then his powers get even cooler and more interesting. I have never seen a fighting system similar and setting wise the author puts the extra effort to making an elaborate unique world of magic and ghostly powers etc. that really captured my attention. I also enjoy how at first the main character isn't that special and then he truly works for his power and THEN it is revealed what makes him special... plus the side plots and things going on behind the scenes add a nice touch to the story. This is my favortie action/adventure/shounen

I can't make comparisons but I think this is a good manga in itself.

I am a fan of Kekkaishi. It doesn't bother me that it hasn't attracted that much attention unlike other shounen series. Its just that I get turned off easily by the popular series and I tend to find them overrated when I do get around to reading them. I like this manga's pacing, giving you just enough without disclosing it all at once. I like that when I finally read the latest scanlated chapter, I am beside myself with impatience for the next chapter to be released and when I finally get to read the next chapter, I feel that the wait (for it to be released) is totally worth it. I also like the clean art, I am not really a fan of messy manga art where you can't easily identify the next dialogue is. Character-wise, I really like Yoshimori (which I consider is an important factor since the success of a shounen series lies I think partially in the likability of the main character. e.g. Luffy, Naruto etc.) I also like that while this manga focuses on the family as one of the power structures which an individual is subjected into, it also at the same time depicts Yoshimori's (Tokine's as well but more Yoshimori) family as different and perhaps more heartwarming. I like it when the manga goes into flashbacks of the everyday family interactions especially between Yoshimori and his brothers. Anyway, to conclude, this manga showcases a good storyline and art, and I think because of this it deserves a 9.

Kekkaishi- Bleach done right

Focusing heavily on character development, subtle politics in a very corrupt system, and trying to balance a supernatural life with school life along with battle now and then, Kekkaishi makes the supernatural seem realistic. Additionally, it goes on to show that the main characters aren't miracle exceptions in the universe like with most shounen, but that they are just one of many supernatural types and in fact at major disadvantages compared to some other powers.

Also, with the exception of the introduction of Zekkai, which isn't much different than the normal kekkai when you think of it, there are no random new abilities and god-weapons granted to the characters. They just have to apply the techniques they started with in new ways to progress.

Yes, Kekkaishi is one of the most underrated anime/manga I've ever watched/read. Despite have around 50 anime episodes (I think 50) this precious gem doesn't receive the attention it deserves.
It's a decent shounen and still is entertaining to this day. I plan on rereading,yes I reread alot of stuff but that's because a lot of modern day stuff is recycled trash and grabs attention because of it's art style. I'm not sure if this was really axed but the ending was rushed but not too the point were it ended with a bitter taste in my mouth but only made me wish for more. It's sad because I really liked the the two main characters.
If they made a decent remake and not copy and pasted garbage of the anime, I would watch it, sadly most things come out with 13 episodes. I miss the good time where 24 episodes were necessary. They rush when there's thirteen and it's mostly unsatisfying

It's a good shonen

Carefully crafted, well-paced, and thought-out plot with reasonable and interesting characters and enjoyable fights. Has tropes but they are handled very well and therefore it never becomes cliched. I definitely recommend this series (and Tanabe Yellow's other works) if you like shonen.
