Very disappointing

Despite the good artwork, the story was... going downhill after quite a promising start. I know this was supposed to be a harem story, but still, the plot's development is turbulent & some of the female characters are simply irritating. Even the male lead can't save this whole mess of a story

I've been reading this for the last 2 or 3 years and happy it's over. At times it was a long and and annoying story but I'm glad I stuck with it. It would get a bit slow and I would want to quit but when the drama started my interest would be renewed. If you are thinking of reading go ahead and do it, it was worth it at the end.

Too many questions and vague answers - SPOILERS!!

Decided to give this a chance. The most disappointing thing is that I found myself asking more questions after every single thing I read. The questions were either answered in a way that may have been implied or were never answered. NON (mangaka) wanted to create a meaningful read but with so many unanswered questions, even though it was put in on purpose, the manga instead turned out to be very shallow. Here are some questions/comments I can address (even though I have A LOT more):

First off: The idea to write about this topic was interesting but it was not justified. Throughout this entire manga, NON was not able to prove that the purpose of a harem marriage is beneficial. It would have been more powerful if there was more contradicting friends, family, and bystanders so that they can prove their relationship and give it more meaning. This marriage was highlighted to be the main story and NON was desperate give it meaning by adding small facts like Ryuu has a "dark past" which was never expanded on.

Second: Madoka had intentions to steal Ryuu away from his family but it was very brief and ended up making Madoka look like a homewrecker instead of making viewers see that she is someone who truly believes in monogamy. She made a good temporary "villain", something that this manga did not have until the moment that Ryuu recruited her to be his manager. It had great potential to be emotionally powerful yet loving, but the arc had to stop so that Koharu can "shine". Disappointing.

Third: Every character had beliefs, which was what made them so lovable. However, NON focused more on the humor and light-hearted side of them while leaving all of their dark-sides/pasts behind (with a few fair mentions of their backstory). After awhile, the manga dragged because it focused on an unjustified marriage the focal point was petty jealousy with the other sister-wives. There were a few events in the story that I felt were underwhelming and would have enriched the story if there was more "meat to the bones." Great examples include:
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Koharu's father's death & funeral, Koharu runs away from the marriage, Rinn's birth, the Date harem wedding, the return of all of the wives at the end, etc.
Subpar buildup only to have the actual event be thrown out the window with a few panels indicating that the event happened.

At best, Hare-Kon is a manga that gives an average outlook of what polygamy may look like in a marriage: the insecurities, as well as the love, that accompany a relationship with sister-wives and a single husband. At its worst, the manga shows a pitiful relationship only glued together by nonsensical humor, a false reality, a shallow promise of "family," and sex scenes. The realities outside of the marriage and the scrutiny it would have faced are left completely unexplored. Still a good read and character development is still something to enjoy but just don't expect to read about a deep emotionally-torn story. Good luck.

@ZoddGuts, I love how you think that people who rated poorly did so because the main character's gender is female. By assuming this, you automatically let us know that you didn't read any actual decent reviews and simply looked at "bad" ratings to justify your own.

It's tragic. It honestly is. What was even the point of telling this story?
I have no idea why the author decided to integrate the legal harem system into modern society of Japan and give it a serious tone. I don't know if they still have leagal wife/concubines system in some remote areas, but it feels it became a history long time ago. And honestly I think it's playing big part due to the impact of this idea on a modern person. Harems legally exist even now, but for these places/countries it's a norm, people are brought up knowing that's their reality and that's how their society works. Other thing is world of Hare-kon, where among normal monogamy couples there's this bunch of ppl. Personally I find the happy ending that was demonstarted can't exist due to the simple fact of it being an introduced system and not part of existing society. Can't imagine a kid that will grow up and other kids will ask him - so, you have three moms and ppl will play the card of amorality and alienate the kid and the family. Probably that's why except from relatives you don't really see people's reaction to it, so this entire problem is ommitted.
Being part of society, which doesn't have polygamy and hearing of multiple criminal cases of what women do to men when they find out they were cheated on. Oof. It's really unrealistic for me to believe someone would be happy in that household. Just nursing a kid, while its mom next door is fucking your "husband" already gives me black lines.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Other thing is characters. Why Koharu is main I have no idea. Her story sounds like main, but most of the plot she's in the BG until last few chapters before finally getting pregnant and supposedly happy ending. But when you read you kinda get a feeling that blonde is taking more central places, we get her past, her pregnancy, lots of her fucking the husband, vacations, her kid. While Koharu seems like miserable animal wheeping in a corner. Her big thing is to get pregnant, hunnie how can you do so if your husband seems to have load of fun with other wife. Even at the end it feels like they all came to terms because now they have kids and they're that type of women that can get used to any shit while they're happy being mothers and the husband is that third leg xD
Anyway, too long, unrealistic, without any real point mopy drama. It was obvious even author got tired of this shit flushing last chapters down the drain really quickly.

Potrays a harem relationship in a realistic way

This manga realistically deals with a harem relationship (after chapter 70 onwards), before that was like any other ecchi romance harem manga.

Because of its realism, the manga has polarising reviews amongst the readers. I love this manga, love the characters and this art is gorgeous! Made me miss japan just by the mangaka adding typical scenes in a typical japanese town and its cityscape.

From the sea of harem mangas out there, this manga is definitely one of a kind. The readers felt connected with the main female character Koharu and always hope that she would find her own happy ending.

The readers experienced rollercoaster of emotions of her own experiences being in that relationship, some to the point where we have readers who would dropped the manga halfway because they felt strongly to her. And reading those reactions online, amazes me. It shows that this manga has substance, its realistic and people shows strong emotions over the drama the mangaka put into this manga.

That shows a lot. This manga is definitely recommended but not everyone's cup of tea. Beware.

So basically Big Love with less cult crap and a whole lot more of sex? Also, Lucifer taking over Bill Paxton's character because why the hell not.

Could be worse.

I don't know why I started read this, honestly I really hate the harem plot in here because it FEELS SO REAL! Oh God..... I try to bear this heavy feeling by keep on read it JUST IN CASE this will end AS MONOGAMY. I don't want to ask or wonder how the journey they will have in between BUT PLEASE, Dear Mangaka-san, I really want it end just with one girl (whoever it is, whatever best for Koharu). :in so much pain: cry

Ignore all the 1 scores, this series is better than what those reviewers gave it, likely they just read the summary and gave a low score for that. Which is funny considering the manga-ka is female. The lead Fem MC is a bit frustrating to read early on, but she's that way so that she can grow as a person, which she does over the course of the series. The best part of the series is seeing the interactions of the characters in their current (marriage) situation. Series has some serious emotional moments that will surprise you, showing you that this manga has more going on than it's somewhat silly premise. Anyways give the series a shot, just note that the Fem MC doesn't stay like that (complaining/wishy washy) forever.
