Great art, weird and interesting story

This is my first time reading through one of Kentaro’s work and I have to say the art is great. It was well detailed and character designs were decent.

Some parts of the story are weird but interesting overall. However, I did feel that the story was really cheesy at some point and didn’t fit the narrative of the unforgiving apocalyptic world. Which honestly, weakens the story a little bit for me.

Gigantomakhia is NECESSARY for Miura's Creative Wellbeing

Looks like a lot of bad rating is given by (butthurt) Berserk fans who can't empathize with the very author that have bring them the very masterpiece they love. Here is the thing: go read Miura interviews and you know despite the grotesque content he is very sincere and pure hearted, and also very enthusiastic on his craft. He is the type of creator who never run out of ideas and very passionate with the story he wanted to tell.

Up to the latest chapter, I haven't seen any decreases in Miura's passion and dedication to his child, Berserk. However it is clear that before Gigantomakhia happened when the hiatus become severe he had strucked with a very bad author block. It is not because he couldn't continue the story, but rather due to severe creative burned out that coming out of unchanneled ideas. This is bound to happened because Mirau's own conduct on doing heavy research and omnivorously gobbled all recommended material that was given by his friend to him. It is very obvious that there are a lot of research excess that he couldn't put into Berserk and have to be channeled somewhere. We are lucky that the we only got the overstayed buttmonkey pirates in the Sea God arc instead of something more severe. In that way, he is very similar to Hideo Kojima before the latter left Konami and finally create something that is not Metal Gear.

This is why despite its very short run, Gigantomakhia is jampacked with shit tons of stuffs, themes, and references. Miura tried his very best to channeled all of his creative ideas into this 1 volume story so he would no longer feel burned out after doing Berserk for the past 30 years. It is obviously not as good as Berserk, but for what is Gigantomakhia is very good as it had worldbuilding, theme execution, and pacing that could easily trump over longer and lesser manga.

If you are Berserk fans, try to read his interview. He is not a man who draw his own experience as the source of the awful stuff he had drawn and shown. He was in fact, feel into depression for weeks after Volume 13. It is honesty that makes Berserk very special to him and to us. If you wanted his magnum opus stayed that way, you better tried to be emphatic if he done another side project while Berserk still running.

This is just a soulless mishmash of a handful of popular shounen manga ideas. You'll be getting deja vu quite often as the already blah story follows it's predictable, on-the-rails plot to the end of the line, with no detour from the expected. Fortunately, it was only 7 chapters, but that was 7 too many for this disappointingly bland offering from an author well known for his creativity.

It's really great. Fantastically detailed art depicting fantastically bizarre beings, a great relationship between the two main characters, and above all the ultimate in High Concept science fiction.

But of course that and more to be found in this unique manga means nothing to the American hyper-moralists who patrol the world of media, not only of their own country, but of Japan as well. I can never understand why they read manga from Japan if they want their entertainment to obey all the proliferating Puritan rules of the USA.

Terrible

This manga pretty much sums up all that's bad about Miura nowadays. Terrible plot, terrible characters, constant moe fetish pandering (where the pantyless loli sidekick constantly speaks of peeing over the main character)... this is just painful to get through. The only thing it has going for is the art.

Miura still has it that is for sure and after 20+ years of Guts and bloody glory Miura decided to return to his roots.
80s shounen-ish action. Even Berserk was supposed to be a "badass" shounen manga in the very beginning but he reconsidered. What we have now is a family friendly (enough) dramedy in a rich science-fantasy world with charming characters. Is the story earth shattering? Well no and most of the time is devoted to word building and characterization as only chapter 6 and 7 show a bit of the outside picture which is fine as this project was supposed to be a refresher for him and the fans and i am glad he did it. The art and designs especially are a beauty to behold and the sense of scale and movement are as always second to none. Only Frank Quitly and Mori Kaoru can draw THIS well and who but a true artist would have a mecha wrestling match to finish a series?
Well maybe Hideki Anno but i think he prefers synchronized dancing. No seriously this is a nice fun action adventure that shows that Miura still has many great ideas left in him and i would like to return to this world when Berserk ends in a decade as Miura wants to. Have fun and don´t expect the next great thing but a fun and corny 80s action movie and read his reviewed Futatabi (8/10) debut piece too.

Not as bad as the first commenter says...

Don't get turned off by this series just because the first commenter has "issues" with the first chapter.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Just because it has a "loli" does not make this pedophilic. The scene where she is standing on his shoulders was supposed to be more humorous than sexual considering her sarcastic, dry sense of humor.
Boob mountains: "Boobs how sick" Get over it. Still not sexual in nature.
Angry black dude: He is of a different race, one that has adapted to the harsh desert sun. Just because you have a light skinned character winning a fight over a darker skinned character does not make this racist.
And lastly, Muira is a known to be a huge wrestling fan. Woopdee doo, the character uses grappling moves.

Now a more unbiased opinion of this series would be that it is ok but not great so far. That's considering that I am a huge Berserk fan. The art style is good but it doesn't seem as detailed as Berserk (or as violent). Give it a chance if you like weird post-apocalyptic stories. Just don't expect something epic, at least I'm not.

So far so good

Everyone is prejudice about something and this is a Kentaro's work so I didn't expect any high school romance. Despite that, the first chapter of Gigantomakhia is mild compare to the earliest Berserk chapters.
If someone complained the protagonist looks Japanese then deal with it because this is a Japanese manga. When I watch a Hollywood movie, I don't expect it to represents world view. Have you ever seen a American movie with a Russian/Chinese/Indian/or any non-American saving the world?

Flame war asides, I didn't find the intensity of Berserk in the first chapter of Gigantomakhia but still, it is a good start.

this is pretty bad
we have lolis who offers to pee on a grown mans face and to show him her genitalia
we have boob-shaped sand dunes
we have a big angry ugly black man who punch things
and we have the japanproxy who are the only ones who can use typical grappler moves
"honorable martial arts that impress everyone"

so in other words
its a typical racist, pedo, sexual crapfest that i thought it was going to be
the art style is ok if you like berserk
