One of the best translated novels I've read, the writing was smooth and easy to read, correct sentence structure and syntax, while still retaining the feel of a Chinese novel. The end translator notes were interesting and helpful to provide context into Chinese culture/writing.
Regarding the story, I enjoyed it despite the non-consensual scenes at the beginning, the relationship between the two characters gradually deepened and I came to feel for them both. The angst made me cry and grieve with the characters. There isn't any pesky love triangle which I appreciated. Misunderstandings were eventually resolved and the story didn't drag on for too long.
This novel was actually pretty good. I am quite shocked that this novel is so underrated. Don't let the translation from chapter 1-11 scare you into not reading it though, both the novel and the translation gets a lot better.
While there was a lot of angst, I did not mind it. Gave the story more depth and contributed to character development. Honestly, I would have preferred if the novel was a biiit longer to give the readers more closure to the story.
Nothing wrong with the current ending though, I liked that it was a happy one.
Recommended!
This whole story ended up being rather sweet. I initially found this while looking for Hua Hua You Long and I'm glad I did. I can't really compare the two stories because, while this one did have some torture at the beginning, overall it was a romantic tale about two people who were enemies by birth (and I wouldn't use 'romantic' to describe HHYL). Wanyan Xu and Su Yi are each other's equal in many ways and I love that that shines through in the story.
Right to the end, Su Yi never elevates Wanyan Xu's status above his own by acknowledging Wanyan as his emperor or using appropriate language that would do so. Instead, he always just calls him by his name.
Just seeing the development of all the characters, from the two main characters to the women who serve Wanyan Xu closely, made me enjoy the story. Wanyan Xu's change from strategic and cunning ruler to compassionate and benevolent ruler was also quite noticeable. And can I highlight the fact that there were several main female characters in this BL? And some were considered beautiful and/or extremely skilled in martial arts. They were smart and useful women, something that seems so rare in any kind of BL and there were 4 of them.
Plus the Empress Dowager who was very well respected and the childhood friend of Su Yi's who's willing to take action to help Su Yi and immediately be honest when face to face with him later even while she's pregnant.
Basically, this ended up being a feel-good story for me. There are moments of extreme angst, but the overall feeling that's left is like the memory of a lazy autumn afternoon 😉
