I was fooled by all the positive comments about how great this manga is. As a diehard fan of country story and slow romance, I bought this book right away. And I was greatly disappointed.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
The uke got on my nerve. I understand he is supposed to be innocent and naive. But to me, his brain is only an elementary school kid level. One random married guy says something and he went to bed with him many times (he doesnt even understand what marriage means). I dont get why he ignored everyone's advice. The family tried to stop him and he didnt listen, mind u, he is NOT in love with this guy. He couldnt tell hes happy or not. The seme has to spell it out for him. I mean its ridiculous, he vomited and cried when he remembered the sex scene.
Then he couldnt choose the seme or that guy, the seme has to use food to lure him. So the whole cheating affair is solved by food? And the other guy let him go just like that. So if the uke says no, its solved but he is too dumb for that.

If they take out that horrible part and some part that has nothing to do with BL stuff like boring work stuff and random guy's story to make it one volume, I would give it a much higher rating.
If u dont want to read about the seme trying to get the uke out of a semi-non-con sex/relationship with a random dude (for some stupid reasons) for an entire volume, spare yourselves from vol.1

I bought both volumes of Brilliant Blue after reading some reviews about it (here and elsewhere). I was prepared to be, well, unimpressed, but them's the chances you take when you start to cold read a new manga (book, etc). I finished it and then re-read it. And I keep going back to read it. This is one of those stories that really takes time to develop the characters, and this is what makes it so good. At first Shouzo comes across as not really likable 'cuz of his way of saying things straight out. He tells one character that he's always admired him because of his ability with words (other guy is pleased with the complement). Shouzo continues on to say quite seriously that it is the ability to bullsh*t with a smile that is so impressive (other guy is not so pleased to hear this, haha). And whilst Nanami is often thought of as dim-witted, he is really just a dim-wit. (there's a difference). Someone who is dim-witted is someone who is, well, mentally slow. A dim-wit is someone who is scatter-brained. Nanami at first seems dim-witted. But as we find out more about him, he is really just one of those people who are scatter-brained. Namami is very smart when it comes to numbers and he is really good at his job. He just has trouble reading kanji. And he is also prone to saying whatever is on his mind, and can't keep a secret. And he loves to eat!

The families of these two are also depicted very nicely, too. It is such a cliche when the family or extra characters are done in black/white. It is so refreshing to see secondary characters given depth. Both Shouzo and Nanami's are close to their family (and are also annoyed by their family at times).
The turning point in this story happens when Shouzo starts to really see Nanami. Even though Shouzo at times seems like a cold hearted kinda guy, his actions speak differently. He never makes fun of Nanami and often speaks up for him. That's when I first started to like Shouzo and think there was something more to him.

I don't mind 'unrealistic' in fiction. After all, that's why it falls under the 'fiction' category! If I wanted 'real life' I'd go read documentary or non-fiction. It is such a pleasure to come across a sweet story like this. However, what I did find realistic is the way the families interacted. And that was refreshing. Neither family goes the black/white route, where they either hate everything about the main character(s), or love everything about the main character(s). Everyone treated each other with respect (and often disagreed with each other). (yes, this does happen in real life, although unfortunately not often enough).

Very sweet

I loved this! I bought both volumes on a whim and based on the reviews here and I'm SO glad I did. It's very sweet, super cute, and pretty funny. For once, both volumes are solely about one couple. And for once, it's a sweet and funny story about two people falling in love that doesn't need to resort to random rape or "I can't hold it in any longer!" forced sexual situations.

I love the two main characters. Shouzo comes off as really serious and strict to most people but you can see by the way he interacts with Nanami that he's actually not a bad guy at all. And Nanami has such an optimistic, simple view on life that people think he's stupid but he's actually not.

I can't say enough that I liked this. It had me smiling most of the way through and I had such a good feeling reading it, all the way to the end. I couldn't help going "Aww!" or snickering at different points. I find it to be such a refreshing change from the usual drama and aggression laden yaoi manga out there, where someone seems partially forced into the main couple. For full disclosure, there is sort of a non-con situation in this series but it's in the background and... well, just read.

Also, it's so bloody cute how Nanami's so into food, and how Shouzo's so into feeding him or watching him. There are some really cute panels too-- both normal ones and the little semi joking semi chibified tiny ones. I really enjoyed this. I highly recommend it, especially if someone wants to read a sweet BL story.

I bought volume 1 & 2 upon some recommendations from June forum & because I need to meet the free shipping requirement at akadot. I am glad I did because it turns out to be pretty decent read. I really like the sweet, slow moving romance between the two characters set in the slice of rural daily life of Japan. Nice art with some very good morals of the story thrown in as well.

Amazing amazing amazing amazing!!!!! X444444 AMAZING!!!
This manga's just so sweet!!!
I enjoyed reading it a lot, especially its 2nd vol. coz it was so touching and fairytale-like.
Well, at first I thought (while reading the 1st vol.) that it's gonna be lame and very uninteresting, coz the main charachters were a) Shouzo: a very cold-hearted guy (I would even say an urban bastard). b) Nanami: a total "dim-wit" as Shouzo reffers to him in the manga.
And I thought to myself... "hmmmm.. so what can possibly come out of that!?" but apparantly, something did.
At the beggining of the 2nd vol. there was like a HUGE turning point in the plot.
I like that huge turning point, it was definatly to my tastes.. BUT I didn't quite like the sharp way it was done in.
The turning point, I must say, was in the characters personality.. of course Shouzo and Nanami became closer and started to affect eachother's behavior.
I like the NEW Shouzo and Nanami better, but I still think that the change sould have been more moderate.
And that is the only reason I'm giving it a 9.5, coz besides that the drawings are charming, the interaction&dialouges between all characters are pretty good and of course (DO NOT WANNA SPOIL!!!) a fine way of ending the manga by showing some... um.. day-to-day events in the characters' life.
Although a bit unrealistic.. actually very unrealistic, but I'm willing to forgive the magaka for that! smile
Absolutely worth every $ I spent on buying it!!!!!
Highly recommended.
