Description
From Bliss:

Eiji and Kouki are angels whose mission is to guide souls to either heaven or hell. Eiji, a black angel, guides corrupted souls to hell, while Kouki, a white angel, guides pure souls to heaven. Both have to work together as partners to accomplish their task. However, God cannot forgive black angels for their accumulated sins, and only gives white angels the power to reincarnate. Though Eiji develops strong feelings for Kouki, can he escape the cruel fate that God has given him?

A Bit Disjointed But Good Enough

I was hoping for a better story. A master piece, honestly. I liked the starting and the premise. The characters are also very likable. Even now the best moment for me was the opening scene of this manga for me. As it introduced the two main characters without making them the centre of the story. I was quite impressed by that. However, after that the really good flow which the story has is broken. I think the mangaka needs to exercise some more self reflection on the storyboard. I am sure this work can be improved even more as the magaka did went to the trouble of resolving the narrative conflict within a most appropriate space with in the mangaverse. However, more consideration is needed as to the reason and method through which we reach the space of conflict resolution. It’s kind of jarring in its suddenness.
The art is a bit flimsy for my taste, tho I did not find it any such great impediment. But I really do wish the artwork would be better, I am sure I would have enjoyed the story even more then.

Happy ending!

To be honest, I'm not sure how I feel about the happy ending. The potential tragedy ending would have been fantastic, but at the same time I like the mixed-bag happy ending because a) I love happy endings and b) Kouki and Eiji have
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
a lifespan difference
which just hurts in all the right places, ha ha.

I can't stop thinking about the other angels though?? Like black angels
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
turn into demons when they die
so can you imagine a white angel staring at their young black angel partner knowing what kind of fate awaits them? Everything hurts.

But overall, White & Black does a pretty decent job at tugging at your heartstrings. It doesn't rip at them, but just gently plucks at them.

In the atogaki (after words), the mangaka herself admitted that she would have wanted to add in more details to the story had she had more time, and I really couldn't agree more. That could have made this one manga a masterpiece. Nonetheless it's already perfect as it is, for everything was graceful and subtle, and fits perfectly with the story. I could totally sympathise with the characters' emotions and feelings through the mangaka's narration. The art however, though it does provide qualities to redeem itself, is unfortunately not really on a par with the story in my opinion. And the cover art is a total turn off to put it bluntly. It's a relief to see how sensei had improved her skills with time through her later works.

I read this manga first time about 5 years ago
Now I re-read it and i still love it a lot

It was a sad atory, with good plot that teaches something about life
but the ending is satisfying, tho not very happy ending but very appropriate

Totally recommended! <3

It was so sad, but I loved it! I really loved how she thought about every detail of their relationship, their feelings, and the complications of their situation; it made it so much more real. And I love supernatural love stories. But yeah, I grumbled about the God, too.

Yep, a story about angels, from the good and the dark side. Very interesting plot about love and sacrifice. Emotional in the end (^_^;)
Love it!

i'm starting a union for black angels

i'm probably not supposed to think about what's likely only a plot device: a god who has half his angels tasked with dealing with corrupted human souls -- and as a result they end up as demons. what a cruel god; i hate him. i tried to get over that, but kept on grumbling about it the entire time.

aside from that the story is more touching than it rightfully should be -- star-crossed lovers, miracle, years of waiting for the destined one and then maybe not getting together after all... i felt as if my emotional strings were pulled, but it was done so gently that i didn't much mind.

Very touching. The only chapters that didn't make me cry was the first chapter. It's really a beautiful story, also it's not too graphic.
