As expected from Takano sensei, this collection of oneshots has got major style! (≧u≦) Every page is drawn with a firm artistic hand of cool stylized taste totally unique of the average shoujo mangaka.
It's just that the oneshots are everything "hipster" (but they're Japanese hipsters), with girls who wear heavy make up hanging out and having whatever feelings with their hipster boyfriends. I actually like hipsters because they have attitude and i enjoy reading about them because they're just people living their lives (different from how mine is), but the oneshots were translated so poorly that the people sound like douches most of the time, which people think is why hipsters are bad (when they actually don't understand!). The English is uncreatively repetitive with its usage, a problem with most shoujo scanlations. It's easy to translate shoujo, it's hard to be ACTUAL GOOD at translating it.
The typesetting is lovely but word editors/checkers just made sure nothing is spelled wrong or sounds their definition of "awkward", which really means for the world: "use the shit out of hyperboles!"
There was this moment when the girl said to the guy "we should split up", the guy says "i don't understand", so then the girl says "I'm saying we should break up!"
Like "we should /split/ up" and "we should /break/ up" literally has ONE word difference, and it makes sense for a guy to say he "doesn't understand"?? Easily the dialogue could have been 10x better executed if she said "we should be apart" or "Let's split" in the beginning (so it doesn't sound as dumbing obvious about breaking up as that other one? Because it doesn't need to be so obvious since she makes it obvious the next flubbing thing she says?).
If making a "direct translation" ruins the context, then it's "badly worded direct translation". Maybe it wouldn't have been so noticeable if the art style and the hipsters were less "attitude" and tasteful, but I'm guessing it was why the translators were interested in the first place. Nothing personal on the translators of Simple Scans, but (some of) the English made all involving characters sound stupid etc. and the story just staled thanks to that.
This manga could have been way better overall if not for the poor word choices but it's a good book to look at if you ever want to look at something cool.
