Where most harems are rom-coms, this one is more of a mystery and drama
by tigerstar186

That isn't inherently bad as it allows for more complex character interactions, but it gets a little too caught up in its own mysteries at times and the series suffers for it. Things will happen just to give fans something to theorize about rather than because it makes sense for the plot or characters, and that can be very frustrating when you aren't reading as it releases as there's no conversation to be had, you just keep reading.

It doesn't help that the manga wants to treat the five like they are idealized waifus but also wants complex drama for them. It comes across that they are all effectively mentally ill in different ways, having been traumatized by the loss of their mother and a questionable upbringing. It's hard to dream of a character as a waifus when all you can think about is how much they need therapy instead of this tutor who forces his way into their lives and somehow solves every problem.

As for the mc himself... He fucking sucks. He has more personality than most mcs in harems which I appreciate, making him an actual character rather than simply the receiver of all other actions, but at the same time, he's very much so a Mary Sue. The series portrays him as utterly inept at socializing and he is excessively rude even after he reaches friendly terms with the five, and outside of Nino they all just shrug off the fact he acts like an ass for no reason. Heck, Ichika even seems to like it. On top of that he solves every problem in the series. You'd think when the quintuplets dynamic is so core to everything they'd be able to solve problems between themselves occasionally without him, but every single problem he plays a role in resolving no matter how unrelated to him it is. People seem to really like him, though, so maybe this is just a personal qualm of mine and he's fine.

I think there's still enjoyment to be had in this as it is somewhat unique among harems, but it suffers from not being read live and many forced developments.

Just an honest opinion after reading the whole thing

The story started very good and some of the characters, especially Nino, had good character development. But the mangaka simply ruined the work by failing to create the unique ending that this story deserved. There is so much lost potential.

Great read but quintuplets can’t divide screen time into equal parts

The manga was overall great in my opinion. The art was awesome, the story was unique and very interesting.

However, it could have used more volumes to give all the quintuplets more arcs. Five arcs each would have been nice.

An enjoyable ride.

Contrary to many popular beliefs, I don't think the ending of 5-Toubun no Hanayome was bad. The people complaining make me think that they are only mad because their favorite girl didn't win, which isn't fair. Even I was rooting for someone else, but I guess such is life.

This manga doesn't do anything new, even I who has never read a harem manga before can understand that, but for a work to be successful it's not necessary to be a path-breaking product, you just need to make us care for the characters, and I believe the Mangaka was successful in doing so. The series is named so for the Quintuplets, and each one of them was atleast an interesting character, although only 2 got good character development throughout the series, which is a bummer. The main character also was good enough, who had his own motives and quirks, however silly, and wasn't a bland cardboard harem protagonist. He actively goes out of his way to care for the sisters, and you can tell that he isn't in it just to smash. It is fun to see the relationship between MC and the sisters grow throughout the series for the most part, and if you're looking for something light and enjoyable to read, Go-toubun no Hanayome won't be the worst thing to chose.

Now onto some spoiler-ridden rant:
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
As I said, I was satisfied with character development of only 2 sisters, and they're Nino and Miku. You hate Nino at the beginning, but she goes through a good-enough growth arc to become an entertaining character. Miku was always good, but she works on herself and gets more confident throughout the series. Seeing her grow was heart-warming.

Now onto the girl that I was actually rooting for, Itsuki, she started out as a likeable character at the beginning, but stops being of any relevance to the plot at one point. Her arc was the worst of all. I mean, I'm happy that she goes on to follow her dream, but the Mangaka could have handled that in some more interesting way. Instead we get something that feels like filler. If her arc was done in a better way, I'd have given this series an 8 or 9. Perhaps that is my bias.

If you have interesting characters, you're bound to have bland/un-likeable ones too. Ichika was the one I was least interested in seeing, as there was never a clear direction as to what the Mangaka wanted to do with her. Sometimes she is the caring big sister, sometimes the cunning brat, and sometimes the shy tsundere. I honestly wouldn't have cared if she wasn't there in the first place. And then we have Yotsuba. She might be the least popular one, and I can see why. Jonathon Joestar is also the least popular Jojo. It's because people don't like bland do-gooders. They prefer tsunderes and cute waifu-material girls in harem, and Yotsuba was a generic good girl character in the story. I understand if you end up not liking her, but I place her above Ichika as I don't mind characters like her. She has spine, and can stand up for herself and make her own choices. In the later chapters we get some chapters from her perspective which was cool.

I also like the character of the sisters' dad. It's a shame the dynamic of MC and Quintuplet's fathers wasn't developed further and stayed practically the same. You'd also see the mysterious girl "Remi" appear throughout the series, and although the way it was handled wasn't perfect, it could have been much worse.
IMO the series was at its peak when Futarou was teaching the sisters for the tests, and then that aspect got lost in favor of high school festivals, which is a shame. there are too many festivals in anime world for me to care about. Every high school series supposedly has one. The Mangaka ditched something which had a touch of uniqueness in favor of generic stuff, which was a bad direction for the Manga.

Well that's it from my side. Thanks for reading

I was hooked from page 1. I really liked all of the characters, even the male lead. This author did a really good job with the mystery aspect. He kept introducing minor curveballs. I thought this was a really well-done unique harem manga.

I loved the ending. My choice of girl did not win, but I'm not even mad. After everything wrapped up, I'm kind of glad my choice didn't win.

Wasted Potential

5toubun is an exercise in a mangaka taking a good work and then going too far and running it into the ground in doing so.
The ending and general romance wrap-up of this manga has been discussed to death and has many well known flaws. So I am going to all but ignore it as much as I can for this review.

The Quintuplet novelty is used well for about the first 1/2 - 2/3s of the manga. The female leads often disguise themselves as one another and toy with and manipulate the male lead for various reasons. This mind-games portion of the manga is its strongest suit early on. It was done well and left the readers guessing and second guessing throughout. The Male MC, a boy by the name of Fuutarou, is very active and intelligent in this portion. He keeps up and is often ahead of the girls playing with him. Its probably one of the better romance manga of the past decade throughout this.

Unfortunately this is not true of the latter portion of the manga. Fuutarou loses that guile and intelligence and becomes more and more of a blank slate as the story continues. Whatever personality and active participation in the plot he has is slowly stripped away until he becomes another ignorant harem protagonist.
More importantly than this, as few are actually reading for Fuutarou, is that the mind-games and the romance in general becomes overly convoluted and simply annoying to follow. The author begins introducing fake-outs, switcheroos, and other assorted subversions of lesser and lesser quality until it gets to the point where the comic becomes less of an interesting story to follow and more of an example of someone trying to write more than they are capable of. Its a chore to read and more interesting for its absurdity than any actual developments that happen.

Had this manga ended before the author tried to play 500IQ mind-games with a 200IQ deck it would have been a very good read. Instead it becomes a unintentional comedy of errors that overstayed its welcome.

A very fun ride, nice art and character design (even with all the obligatory clichès a story like this has)

All in all, a solid 8 in my book. Fluent story, flashbacks put at a good pacing and a reasonable behaviour of MC and cast in general. The only thing, in my opinion, is that the ending is a bit "watered down", I wouldn't know how to put it in other terms, and not entirely satisfying

(but probably because I shipped another girl, still it was somewhat awkward.)
