Defies (Expected) Traditions
by devinsshi

Rating: 9.0  / 10.0
PREFACE: I have finished reading all the chapters. SPOILERS are ahead but they should already be hidden.

HARUBA Negi takes us on a journey through a path filled with bumps, holes, scrambles (lol), sudden u-turns, unpredictable twists, confusing signs, questionable routes, etc. through his story telling. It was quite thrilling. It was very enticing. It definitely gave me a brain-ache, too. He tells a rom-com harem love story in a way that defies our pre-supposition of our run-off-the-mill 'harem' genred mangas.

I felt as if he made some screw-ups and patch-ups along the way, which I think should be more forgivable since it is a weekly manga.

Character development was very enjoyable from the start until the end.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
HARUBA Negi shatters several stereotypes of the typical harem manga through his characters. Uesugi Fūtarō is not your typical dense or well-liked male protagonists, but a socially awkward nerd with a not very likeable personality. Itsuki, despite being the first girl, actually ends up being the only one out of the 5 who doesn't harbour a relatively strong affection for Fūtarō and ends up having a supporting role throughout up til the end, not to mention she was the only one not to share a kiss with Fūtarō. Miku who seemingly took a head start as the strongest contender did not win in the end, however, the typical ursurper characters, i.e. Nino and Ichika, did not as well. Nino, went from hostile to tsun-tsun dere-dere, but proactively being upfront with her feelings and became the very first one to confess to Fūtarō's face. The genki type Yotsuba's back story was then revealed and turns out to be the one who wins Fūtarō's affection and marries him by the end. The unexpected choice of having the genki type character winning the harem race while simultaneously having the first girl as purely a support type clearly showcases how unorthodox Negi is as an author of such a genre. At first, I thought it was unfair as to why Itsuki was the only one left out from having strong love feelings towards Fūtarō, but then I came to terms with it after realising Negi's intentions with the characters' roles. When Ichika turned a bit yandere and sabotage-minded, I was actually disappointed at this choice. I guess Negi's intention was to introduce significant drama content without involving additional characters, but nevertheless I felt appalled when she was chosen by Negi to be given such roles because she was actually my favourite character.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Many readers are mad because of the choices that HARUBA Negi has made, but the way I see it is that's just how good he is at making such lovable characters entangled in an interesting plot which lead to presenting an unorthodox conclusion.

I haven't had internal screams and thrills in a long time from reading mangas with genres such as this one. It was a breath of fresh air.

The soul of harem manga is guessing who will be the end girl.
From love hina to Ichigo100 and then Nisekoi are all the same.

And wow this manga did that so well through hints and baits and switches

Now that this manga come to end soon
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
and the best girl won at the end

I can only reminiscence the pleasure from week to week digging hints and theorized new stuff
Though the pace is a bit of in the end, but I prefer that over dragging like it's predecessor

I believe other has already praise the characterization and plot
Overall this a top harem manga that has good end girl guessing
And completed with likeable character and sensible plot

Very good

It's a very good harem romcom, with the right mix of good art, cute interesting girls, and slice of life drama.
The plus is that the mc is the "good" kind of dense, very focused and strong willed, and neither a pervert nor having nose bleeds every panel, which makes him interesting and actually admirable as a character. He's a study nerd not interested in love, mature and sometime funny.

"The characters are sort of trope-y and the story isn't exactly the most original out there, but its great art and just the fact that it's a harem manga that focuses more on character relationships rather than fanservice has got me interested."

1-103. 8/10 so far. I’ve really enjoyed this whole ride so far, and have had my order of the girls change around quite a bit. The art is consistently good and the full page spreads always look fantastic. I think Fuutarou is a good protagonist and I’m glad he not only recognizes what’s going on, but occasionally acts on it. The manga has done a fantastic job of developing Nino in particular, but also Miku and Ichika to an extent. I really like Itsuki and Fuutaro’s chemistry, even if she hasn’t had as much development as the other girls, and Yotsuba I feel has unfortunately not gotten as much attention as she deserves. I’m actually kind of surprised that we’re 100+ chapters in and it’s still kind of hard to tell who is the eventual winner.

each character got their own personality
so unique, and because the Male protagonist is so bland, we could pair him with any of girl

Good MC

It's fun. Didn't expect a quintuplet harem to be so entertaining and refreshing. A lot if it is because the MC is a lot better than in most manga like this. The way they tease past events of Fuutarou also keep his life interesting.

it hits a few cliches but the writing and execution are stellar its still a little young but its pretty representative of solid sibling drama.

other reviews tend to over praise the MC, he's at least not unrelatable but he's cliche, pretty standard poor mc, and he lacks enough development to be the godsent "one we've all been waiting for" some might suggest.

don't expect to much, and you'll be pleasantly surprised

Good Story and Character Development

So far there is nothing bad about this. MC not a weak-willed, idiot, or perveted like other MC manga. He is cool and calculatic. The story not slow or fast paced and the comedy not bad as well. Hope it's not axed or become like nisekoi.

Big warning about the translations of LHT.

Fun series so far, MC is pretty decent and likeable in a kinda smart jerkish way.

Just a heads up, LHT translations is supbar, they have poor grammar and have gotten little details completely wrong. Read /a/nonymous translations when they come out.
