Description

Due to some unusual circumstances, Yutaka, a popular university student, often called a miser, raised by his strong sister, is an acquaintance of Rika, the owner of a host club. And then he meets Ritsu, the number one host at that club, and Kirishima, a lawyer who’s also a customer who adores Ritsu.

so much potential!

the stories told in such a short amount of chapters was phenomenal and touching. i even almost cried at the end of the third chapter.

however, i feel like we got cheated out of a larger story with so much potential, especially since we only got to really explore TWO characters out of the like 5 introduced to us. i really, REALLY wanted backstory on ritsu and how she met rika-chan! (also how that little unrequited love story started) ahh! the characters were all so interesting and had great chemistry with each other, it really set the stage for a great slice-of-life manga with little bits of romance thrown in. i wanted to see the lawyer resign and take over the coffee shop his father owned, the growth of yutaka and maybe him meeting someone who's as strong as his sister, ahhh there were so many ways this manga could have gone!

it feels like this was just a great beginning. sad to see that there probably won't be anymore ;(

Sincere and touching

Beautiful. Though it was short, it got to explore various types of love, from unusual family situations to even more unusual couple relationships in a simple, sincere, and touching manner. I really wished we could learn more about all four main characters and their interactions in the past and now during their life together, but I also love the current ending. A new, young life was like the dawn to their 24/7 never-ending, worn out and lonely ferris-wheel ride; ending on such a high note yet still capable of making you cry, Gold Rush 21 was simply amazing.

I'm honestly crying right now! Not just for the end of chapter 03 but ... how I would wish for the last chapter not to be just an extra but really a continuation!!!
It really gave us only a small glimpse of the characters drawn so beautifully and carefully. What they want, fear, hope or even how much they want to belong somewhere and have a steady place to return from where-ever they go!!! Whom-ever they love and "cherish". Although that also remains vague for some characters!
There is such an enigma left in the end that gets you to start dreaming and imagining your own ending! I LOVED IT!!!

Surprisingly good

After reading a lot of bad shoujo mangas recently, my expectations were rather low despite the interesting description. How happy I was to discover that it exceeded my expectations! I know it's considered shoujo but I'd rather say it's josei since it's definitely not your usual gender bender or love story. There's really nothing usual about Gold Rush 21 at all. What I especially loved about it were the characters. Their emotions, dreams and choices, the relationships between them. From the little kid who appearers in chapter 2 to the main characters, they were all well-thought, realistic and existed on their own. My only complaint is that it was begging for a continuation. This one volume is great on its own but it doesn't feel complete. One more and I'd die of joy.

But other than that, I LOVE this manga. If only more shoujo mangas are like this. In fact, if only more mangas in general are like this. It's poignant, touching in its depiction of different types of love. I can't believe that in the course of reading this one volume, I was amused, intrigued and even saddened, all in the course of ONE volume. It's amazing!
And the characters, all of them have depth, and I love all of them, including the sister and the little boy and the old couple. Although we only get to see snapshots of their stories, they manage to captivate me.
I can't say enough of how much I love this manga. It's only vice is that it's only 1 volume, but in a way it creates a sense of intrigue.
I'm surprised this is by Fujiwara Kiyo, her other work, Help! is fine, but nowhere near as good as this.

Like shoujo_forever said, this is very unusual shoujo - I'd even say it's the most unusual shoujo I've ever read. Really subtle and thoughtful and sensitive, very mature and the funny and tragic moments all serve to illuminate the human condition. Loved the fact that this is an equal-opportunity manga with gay and straight characters, and sexuality isn't made a big deal of as a label or anything, it's just part of people's lives and who they are. Such a realistic and delicate world-view. I really like this. REALLY. One of the best I've read in this genre.

It's not typical shoujo

firstly....oh wooow ;D
This was such a breather from all the typical shoujo...though the summary may make it seems like a typical shoujo but trust me, you wouldn't want to miss this!
The story itself was greatly told...I agree completely with lys(below), with everything she said since she told it better than I am xD so, I won't be repeating her...Anyway, I would still like voice out my opinions...The plot could have been more deep and maybe more drama...and Unfortunately,(it pains me to say) there are obvious loose ends..but it's just a 1 vol..dang! it would be more spectacular is it's a 2 vol manga
but still it's so heart-warming and give you a fuzzy and gauzy feeling...and the story is beautiful and meaningfulteary
The characters are interesting and each have their own distinctive personality which you will not get bored of...
the art was very good...Yeah! the cover doesn't give it any justice..if it weren't for Hard Romantica, I wouldn't even read this since my decisions are mostly biased by the art of the cover(and this is why what I've been reading lately have been such a crap -- ; )

Different gender-bender

Kno wat, women who cross dress for men in pursuit of men arent actually my cup of tea and this isnt actually it so I went through this. the story line here is a bit surprising and out of ordinary, noone actually finds love but it sort of shows you how to live with being loved once. There are subtle hints of unusual love but that might just might be me. Actually, all forms of love is sort of subtle. And I love the fact the main story has no high school girls, cute innocent gals are just too many in shoujo. The third chap is sad. I guess its a bit poignant.

The extra story is a plot line that has been done before but I am glad it isnt the physical try before actual.

And finally I love Ritsu, I wish they made more elegant people like Ritsu who like women 😀 . Ah! Its just my yuri fan girl calling out.

I was really surprised by how good this one volume was. I'd read a couple of Fujiwara-sensei's other works (Help!, Tsuyogari... never had much interest in Arakure) but they didn't really stand out to me as anything special, just rather typical shoujo, pretty nice art... The summary... while it's technically a correct summary of the initial setup, there's a lot more to this series than that basic premise.

But this one is pretty different somehow. Maybe it's the unusual setup—there's no "girl pursuing her first love" plot common to most shoujo manga. It explores a lot of different ways that people feel and express "love," in beautiful, realistic ways. The first story was pretty hilarious; the second was fascinating; the third was beautiful and made me cry. I'm very impressed. I think everyone should really give it a try, whether the summary sounds interesting or not.

All that said, the extra story (a random one-shot) kind of threw things off for me. (especially after the awesome, beautiful third story. i loved it so much!) It's not bad on its own—a short, sweet love story. But I'd recommend you read it first or separately from the main story.
