It was fairly predictable from my stand point. I read a lot of manga so I can fairly judge where a story is heading based on the genre. Still it was not a typical shoujo, It had comedy which offsets shoujo's inherit drama, and like most romance genres I tend to like the side character's romance better than the main character's. I feel that the main character's romance is pretty much always set in stone, though there are a few exceptions, where as the side character's can go either way.

More romance than cooking

Mixed Vegetables is a typical albeit refreshing shoujo manga themed around cooking. The heroine's strong willpower and enthusiasm reminded me of the heroine from Kitchen Princess, although unlike Kitchen Princess, the plot presented in Mixed Vegetables is fairly different. The heroine's family owns a patissiere while the other male protagonist's family owns a sushi restaurant. Anyway, each protagonist is interested in the other family's profession, and the story takes off from there. However, although the theme of cooking plays a prevalent role initially, it mostly spirals off after the first one or two volumes, with the romance and relationship developing playing a bigger part, which was pretty disappointing; basically it turns into your typical shoujo halfway through.

Nevertheless, Mixed Vegetables is still quite enjoyable. Although the originality of the plot is somewhat lacking, (there isn't much to set it apart from other shoujo manga) it's still quite readable. The romance is sweet, and luckily, not much cliches were present throughout the manga (although there is a steady bit of jealousy here and there, like other commenters have pointed out).

...But awkward. So the manga seemed want to take its own original path but then suddenly they wanted some jealousy so they stuck

The old married guy flirting (?) with the female lead. It kind of confused me. Why would the main male get jealous of a married man trying to take his girlfriend to Europe? But then again I had mixed feelings about this because I wished he wasn't actually married man but a bachelor.

This author seems to enjoy putting in a steady amount of jealousy in her works. Otherwise that simple absurdity in the story, I found it one of those rare shoujo. Maybe because not everyone like the manga that I like? There was a slow, steady plot and a little talk about dreams and this manga felt amazing for me...

It is a really great series. So, first of all, I had to read this in Licensed English versions from my local library. I couldn't find scanlations for the last volumes online so I resulted to my library. Hope you guys have luck finding it too.
Okay, let us start! I'll start with negatives.
The art for me, was a bit weird but still good. Most of the time it was great but yeah, all of the characters kind of look like each other. The dads of Hana and Hayato got me confused and yeah, they were drawn really good looking. :S Which usually manga doesn't have haha. Anyways, Hanayu's hair kept on changing and I got confused sometimes whether she had long hair or short. But, that's not really my issue. 😛
The romance isn't really my type. It's kind of too realistic and not that pretty like most main-romance mangas. This wasn't really MAINLY on romance because there was the whole "sushi cooking" thing going on. Which is really good, because it made it interesting! 😀 But I'm fine with both types.
Anyways, what I disliked about the romance between the two main characters was that they kept on

Going on and off with break ups and make ups. Just because of trivial reasons.

Characters were pretty good but Maezawa annoyed me for a while. Aoi was too girly, in my opinion and it made him...Un-guy like.
The plot was interesting. The ending was a BIT rushed. But I was okay with it. I'd like to see some kind of epilogue though.

Anyways, 9/10 😀 Cuz it was really good. Give it a go, it's worth a read.

It was a bit awkward at the start, but after two volumes the plot strengthened and became more interesting and exciting. It's really funny and not an over the top rollercoaster shoujo. It's definately a fun read! I also like the mangaka's side note. Very cute.

I had my doubts about reading this (I mean... cooking?), but the story was incredible; well-paced and likeable characters make it more than worth your while to try it. One of the best shoujos I've read in forever. I may buy the licensed version once I'm settled down (carting all those books around is backbreaking!)

I thoroughly enjoy reading this manga. It doesn't have the typical cliches and the characters are unique. The plot isn't predictable too. I highly recommend this manga to anyone who wants a refreshing shoujo.

I've read the first two volumes published by Viz, and i must say, this one has more romance to it that the previous shoujo they licensed, I really want to see how it'll be, thank god it's not predictable XD I recommend it if you're looking for a good intense romance.

It's a nice shoujo. Nice expressions, poses and angles - and that alone makes the not so extraordinary scenes a refreshing read. The protagonist who is learning about what love is is interesting. Though I've only read one volume so far. Let's hope the later ones are just as fun to read!

For some reason the confession with the cucumbers was a winner for me. (Is that strange?) Because there is something off about it.
