And he has proven he can be good at many things: in academics, in sports… but even though he seems to be really good at basketball (showed the students their first live look at a dunk), and though he seems to really like it, he seems unwilling. What is he afraid of? What is he pushing away?

So I'm really enjoying this manga, I can't put a finger on the genre - but I like how likeable and surprisingly diverse all the characters are, how open minded the author is and how even though this is a shoujo, it doesn't tell a cliched story. I love stories where there is a gentle romance that takes background to the actual story, and in doing so lets the author dispense with the usual tropes and cliches to move forward or lengthen a less layered story.
Now onto a side topic about a side character. Simon is the most popular character according to the author. And its probably why he's on so many of the volume covers. I actually started reading this b/c of the misunderstanding that Simon was the mc. He is very attractive - Riko's mother says aptly that rather than handsome, he's sexually attractive, and she says this very matter of factly. And its true. In manga thats not for older audiences the "sexy male" characters are always sparkly said to be experienced playboys, overdone and somewhat laughable to make them likeable. But Simon is just straight forwardly attractive and we as the audience just get to straight forwardly appreciate him lol.

One thing about this manga which is somewhat spoilery (but not really):
If after reading it you think Saimon is really quite cool and it's kinda a shame that Michael didn't seem to appreciate him enough, well, big chance it's time for you to migrate (or rather, broaden your horizon) into BL/Yaoi world, really.
