It's fine. Not good enough to really recommend. Just fine.

Basically there will be nothing new here, if you're familiar with the subgenre (cultivation novel isekai)

The mc is ...competent at times. Sometimes curiously so, when you consider she was just a writer, even if she has memories of her host body (which isn't brought up nearly as much as it should be).
But then she just randomly eats a magic plant at one point....why the **** would she do that?? Idk.

also the first chapter ends with a preview and summary of the next bunch of chapters, which was just really really annoying. I highly recommend you skip over that and just move on to chapter 2, so as to not ruin your experience.

The romance is waaaaay too rushed.
The novel's original male lead is an annoying bore, in the way that it feels unbelievable that he would be the protagonist of a novel in the first place.
Also the apparent original female lead of the novel's relationship with the male lead feels like it doesn't quite make sense either...but it's possible that's explained down the line, as there's a single hint that there's more to the story.

The FMC is, unfortunately, OP in a way that feels completely unearned. (I was hoping the story would be about her building her skills, it's not)

So basically, it's just an ok story. It has many faults that mean it simply can't be rated higher. But I enjoy it at times, so it's getting a 6.

good story, good characters, good romance

The story flows well, the characters are interesting, the MC is a rare one for the genre, and the ML is wonderful. Their relationship is healthy, hot and sweet. The MC gets powerful and inspirational. The villain is horror style creepy. Good story.

Many people said it was funny but I didn't see it... I actually thought it was kind of serious.

Are you serious? This FL is a certified idiot.

...wow.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
First she ate a 1000 year old plant that could be deadly WITHOUT a shred of caution. Didn't even wait for anyone else to come and make sure she doesn't die when she stuffed the entire damn plant into her maw.

And then she willy-nilly threw a fucking energy ball in the midst of poor visual conditions due to a smoke bomb from someone she's trying to capture. Thanks to that protagonist halo she conveniently kills someone the readers severely dislike, and who was abusing her with drugs, instead of her own entourage in the middle of a very narrow alley.

Now she takes off her mask during a dangerous, undercover mission? What's the point of wearing it then? Why? Because the knife wound on her cheek is poisoned? Girl, it's called getting away and then taking care of the injury!
Like, no, this all happened within 20 chapters. I'm actually impressed at how consistently stupid this FL is.

Really great isekai with a badass FL

I have enjoyed this manwha a lot and I’m impatiently waiting for an update. The art is gorgeous, the story is good and I love the main characters. ML is both strong, cute and respectful with an intriguing past. His relationship with FL is adorable and healthy. The FL rival trope is completely subverted as she is actually inspired by the FL’s strength and feel a kinship to her. And FL is so badass while still remaining human, with doubts and feelings. I see people in the comments calling her overpowered, and yes, she is quite exceptional. But that comes with the genre, and I see overpowered ML all the time and no one is complaining about them. I stopped reading Teenage Mercenary, The player of the tower of whatever and so on because they flatlined on emotion and plot. This one is actually an amazing mix of shonen and shojo as it has qualities from both genre.

Awesome comedic Mary Sue

The side characters' expressions are so cute. I had tons of laugh while reading this. ML reminds me of Nine Photon from his cuteness. FL is a Mary Sue but I think that's expected because of the given title, and she's cool. Art is beautiful, too many screenshot worthy scenes. Can't wait for Season 3.

I forgot I read this already and reread it, I liked it better the second time.

In its core, this is a 'chosen one' story with the female MC at its core with many Shoujo tropes.

The good: The art is good to very good. The relationship between the MC and FMC is decent, and their intimacy is depicted unusually well. Scenes of a brush of a finger on a cheek or a hesitant embrace are given the attention and centrality they deserve. Any series that is romance focused should have more this.

The FMC is the chosen one so she gets to have some bad-ass moments. I like it. Sometimes even other female characters get to shine, which is also nice.

The bad: Some parts of the story are inane and the rest isn't very interesting, clearly the story isn't really the focus. The start is especially bad. For example, her father is depicted as highly intelligent competent leader, but there is no way things would go as they did if that was true. It is just jarring. There are multiple things like these.

The characters don't have that real feeling great works give to their characters. The translation team might not be good enough at English to allow for greatness though.

Overall, not a bad way to spend some time, mostly for the romance and some bad ass FMC moments in a Wuxia context.

Old review:
The MC is an insane genius learning advanced techniques just because without any effort (except once in the first chapters). The MC went from knowing no martial arts to be practically the strongest in about two months of training. The MC is also unrealistic personality wise. She behaves like a 15 year old even though she was a working author before.

The plot doesn't really make sense. It is like the like the outline of a plot, without any of the details that make it feel real or logical.

For example, and this is a minor "spoiler" so be warned. Her evil stepmother has made it so her paternal clan infiltrates the MC's clan to the point most of the people are from that clan. Then this is discovered and they are just fired. How would they be fired ? At this point, you already lost. Why wouldn't the rival clan start the war now since it is coming anyway ?

The art is quite nice. Not the fights, but the expressions and looks of people. I hate the chibi versions though becuase it makes everyone bald, even some of the children.

Not to sound too negative, it is quite alright. It just isn't good.

my favorite manhwa so far... but they dropped it

FL is a kickass, strong and likable. A change for those weak willed/clumsy/annoying female leads that swarm in shoujo and josei comics. The ML is nice and cute too, he is not the typical jerk/arrogant/trash love interest that I hate so much. The story is good.

Note: Unfortunately this manhwa has been on hold for more than a year. No news from the author or the publisher. Most likely this project has been dropped and it is unlikely that another artist will finish the story. How sad...

Great story

The characters are all interesting, the art's quite pretty, there's a good overall plot as well as well-paced arcs, and the martial arts fantasy setting is cool. There's a good cast of characters and it's not only focused on just the female and male leads. Everyone gets decent screen time. The FL is very strong and independent, while the ML is also strong and emotionally supportive. It's great.

Honestly, the one complaint I have is that the FL is ridiculously OP right away. But, between the plotting and ridiculous demonic powers that seem to exist, she'll probably need it so it is balanced out a little bit. Still, she's better than literally every non-demonic person within like twenty years of her age and hasn't really had much of a challenge facing anything so far so hopefully the power imbalance course corrects a little.

Favorite Aspect: Good character chemistry and a protag that kicks butt.

As someone who has not read many wuxia stories, my opinions on the genre might be biased towards this one story, so please keep that in mind.

I really enjoyed Master Villainess! But I'm not sure if I would consider it well written all the time. It is certainly funny and entertaining, but the overall plot feels a little loose and unstructured. Maybe this is because most of the protagonists goals are short term, most problems are fixed relatively quickly, and so far things have always gone in the protagonists favor.

Haewon Tang is fun and likeable, though it is a shame how quick her mastery of martial arts comes, but I think that's common in wuxia? Her supporting cast is hilarious and they bounce of the protagonist very well. Unfortunate we only just got a taste of the antagonists/villains so I'm not sure what to think about them yet.

Also Gunwoo is such a cutie like wth!! I love him. All in all, a fun read if you like ass-kicking drama with common comedic elements.

You Might Also Like: I can't think of any other wuxia I have finished, so... give Beware the Villainess! or The Lady and the Beast (Hongseul) if you like seeing female leads kick butt!
