Criminal Intent's Comment Isn't True At All

Okay. So, in regards to Criminal Intent's post, they are completely wrong. As of the original time posting this comment, the series is on chapter 7 translated and chapter 8 in Japan. This is a true blue sequel to the original Tokyo Ghoul manga. However, that being said, not much will be said unless you go back and read said manga. It is worth a read. At 144 chapters, it shouldn't take too long to go through. This sequel has great potential, and I see it lasting a lot longer than the prequel. I feel that the previous series was a giant prologue to set the world for this one, and I'm looking forward to seeing what becomes of it.

As for the points he made in his post: [This might be confusing if you haven't read the prequel]

-More characters are showing up. Characters who have shown up have developed in reasonable ways. I enjoy Akira’s change in tempo. She’s evolved. She’s learned you have to put some heart into it or you’ll fail.

-Tokyo Ghoul constantly uses tropes and “cliché” characters in colorful ways. The good thing is: these characters EVOLVE through the series, growing out of their initial archetypes. Just like in the original Tokyo Ghoul.

-The CCG has not started accepting half ghoul investigators. A distinction is made that these are experimental trials being ran to see if they can use them as weapons. All of them, with one exception, were made by the CCG and are constantly walking a line of being disposed of should they grow too dangerous. Its weapon testing. Fight ghoul with ghoul. The process they used is also different, which is why they can eat normal food, BUT concerns are brought up that the higher their RC count goes, the more their diet will change.

-Get to chapter 7. The creator and editor are very comfortable with the darkness of the series. Frankly, the previous series wasn’t cheated at all. Hell, there’s even a chapter smack dab in the center called “Half Way Point.” The previous series was meant to end when it did. They did not jump ship or “cheat” the original.

-Not fan speculation. There clearly is. We’re barely 8 chapters in, and we can see a lot.

-I also disagree with his final statement. If you are a new reader, go read the prequel. These two series are meant to be read together.

Over all, they’re both amazing series. Read ‘em.

Be patient

In the prequel we learned a lot about a certain side to Kaneki Ken and in the blink of an eye, we're standing on a different stage with its main player wearing a different mask. But it's still Kaneki. Initially it's hard to love him the same way but his raw personality shines brightly and that's the salvation in the rough road ahead to uncover truth and resolve.

The first chapters were both exciting and hard. Instead of getting important answers right away, new characters are shoved in our faces and the old ones we loved are missing, dead or are very slowly being reintroduced. This is probably the main reason for any poor first impressions but knowing the quality of the prequel, I think many good things could be coming due to the large amount of important characters shrouded in ambiguity. And of course by good I mean horribly tragic.

TLDR;
Read the Tokyo Kyushu first. Once you've read that, start this one equipped with patience. And have faith in Ishida Sui.

Seriously, I cried so much at the end of Tokyo Ghouls. This manga is only a few chapters in so nothing is set in stone, but I have high expectations---and I'm glad not all of my favorite characters are dead.

But i'm also really sad.... Kaneki is living such a miserable life.... :'( sobbing

Honestly, amazing

This is a series in which you can't skim read. You have to pay clear attention to detail as most of them can foreshadow future events or further develop a character. Many people in the comments complain that the sequel is worse than the previous series but in my opinion it's better than the previous one.

It develops characters from the first series while adding in new ones and all of them have a part to play in the manga. Characters that you may have not liked in the first series are shown to have different sides to them and as the story progresses they grow as characters that might lead you to develop feelings for them even if they were dislikable from the beginning (for me it was Yomo and the gourmet ^^). But that doesn't mean that the new cast in the sequel are forgotten. The author manages to make time for development for them too and you would liking them as much as the previous characters in the first series.

In the prequel, the manga shows the reader the view-point of ghouls and how they live in modern society and this changes in the sequel where the view-point has now shifted to CCG which I really like as this allows us to see from two sides to the story and that there is no black and white only grey in this world. No one in this manga is truly evil as all the characters that have done despicable acts have some sort of reason or backstory to lead them to the point where they are.

This is indeed a sequel to the first series and it has given us answers to what had happened in the first series. I recommend this to people who like character growth and development, horror, some mystery and tragedy(there's a goddamn lot T_T). Although, you do need to pay attention to detail otherwise you could get lost and will not understand what's happening in the story.

I love it--but it's breaking my heart

While the author has not officially confirmed that the main character Haise is kaneki. Most of the fandom currently believes that it's true, and 8 chapters in this story already has shown some other characters from Tokyo Ghoul.

I think this manga is going to be a GREAT sequel! I'm looking forward to it a lot.

The prequel is the best manga I have ever read, and I am extremely happy that there is now a sequel. While I do not believe this sequel has found it's stride yet, I do believe in Ishida and know that it will get there soon. He is still laying out the skeleton of the current character standings and slowly working up to destroying us all over again. I just can't wait for that.

Mangaka isn't executing

Honestly, the mangaka isn't living up to the standard he created with the prequel.
Action - It's 31 chapters in and I have yet to see a coherent fight scene between two characters occur as of yet. What I mean by this is that there hasn't been a single fight scene in this manga so far, that hasn't cut away in the middle of the fight to something else for 7-8 pages. When you're running an avg. 19 page chapter, 8 pages of cut away completely ruins the pace of the fight. He's inserted so many characters, many of whom you don't care about or know anything about to even try caring, that when he does these cut aways you're just skimming pages to get back to the fight. And this cannot happen when you only have 19 pages to read.
Drama - A lot of characters are thrown at you throughout the series, this was the case with the prequel as well, but a number of central characters that were recently implemented are poorly executed. Nothing drives you to truly care about his underlings as none of them have any truly redeeming qualities. So when the mangaka tries to create drama by making those characters struggle, you just end up skimming pages again as you have no reason to care whether they live or die. Hell, all of them are relegated to 2 basic emotions based on their archetype, which is boring and unrealistic.
Horror/Mystery - It's hard to be frightened by characters and events when everything that is supposed to frighten or shock you is caused by someone who has completely lost their mind. Everything scary in this series is caused by someone who has completely lost it or never had it at all. That's interesting when you have one or two completely psychopathic characters but if everyone is completely broken the horror factor loses it's charm.
Pace - Look, don't read this right now. Wait for it to hit some 50-60 chapters so you're not waiting for fights to get cut off, or characters to not get built, or a character to not scare you every week. Plain and simple, the focus of this manga seems to no longer mainly focus on one character and the story he creates, but on several characters and how they contribute to one narrative. This would be great if the mangaka could simply make you care about them, but he has not executed that yet.

A few thoughts

Some spoilers ahead

I didn't like Tokyo Ghoul:re (though I sort of enjoyed Tokyo Ghoul). I thought it was bad. I'm not gonna bother to delve back into the manga to figure out why certain points were good or not so forgive me if I get them wrong.

The biggest gripe with this series is that it has no thematic focus and therefore nothing the mangaka nor the reader can grasp onto (hence TG's ending and :re) . The entire series devolves into a farce that can be aptly summed up in one image.

The central conceit (and conflict) of Tokyo Ghoul (and :re) is that (A) ghouls consume humans as their only source of nourishment. The problem is that Tokyo Ghoul constantly undermines its central conceit. If (A) why is it that no one bothered to study the anatomy of ghouls to figure out why they can only eat that? Even if and only if (A), why is it that no one bothered to research de-ghoulification? It doesn't make much sense (nor is it believable) that the human side did not do any research into an enemy that threatens their existence.

Once these questions are asked you begin to wonder why is any of this happening? If the reasons ghouls are a threat to humanity is because they consume humans, why not look into that and find ways to stop them from needing to consume humans? Suddenly the seriousness of the story fallls off and you see it as the farce it is. There is no genuine conflict. There's just poorly written excuses for what's happening. The funny thing is that Tokyo Ghoul:re's ending finally manages to create synthetic human flesh for ghoul consumption and offers it as a sort of conclusion to the central conflict between humans and ghouls. What irritates me is that that solution was never once brought up during the story and instead we have characters acting out in ridiculous ways because no one bothered to do figure out the biology of ghouls.

One problem with the above statement though is that ghouls were in charge of the human-side organization fighting the ghouls so it may have been possible (even if the original author never outright said this) that they prevented research into de-ghoulification and synthetic human flesh. Well why? As far as I remember, the ghouls in charge merely lusted for power's sake and very few (read one) had ridiculous notions of turning everyone in Tokyo into a ghoul. (Yeah just go ahead and wipe the species that sustains you.) It also makes sense de-ghoulification was not very interesting to research due to ghoul's incredible regenerative properties and physical capabilities at the cost of needing to feed on human flesh. But given the series intense focus on questions of ethics, it doesn't make ghoulification all that good if it means to consume human flesh. (As to the question why is it okay for humans to eat other living beings and not ghouls with humans, is that (1) refer to two paragraphs above and (2) humans (and ghouls) have the intelligence that other animals can't have (intelligence in the Aristotelian-Thomistic sense)).

In short, :re is boring and messy to read through. Whenever it gets interesting, it loses any momentum right afterward. Also the art is sloppy in comparison with the prequel.

The curse of sequels

What I loved about Tokyo Ghoul was the character development, the good phasing of the story and a general feeling of "wanting to know more" when reading. I liked Kaneki Ken and I liked how he reflected and interacted with his surroundings. Such qualities are clearly lacking in :re.

Honestly, :re is an incorrigible mess that just gives the reader fight after fight after fight without explanations. There is no real story, no real development, no characters that I felt was as interesting or as funny as those in Tokyo Ghoul. I am both sad and disappointed that the author wasted this manga's potential with a mediocre sequel meant to (probably) please the audience rather than actually making quality work.

For those who will say that :re needs more "reflection" or "patience" clearly does not understand Tokyo Ghoul but are just fanboys who doesn't want anyone talking shit or saying anything negative about the manga. Read and compare Tokyo Ghoul and :re and you will see a clear difference in quality.

Tokyo Ghoul:re is not finished yet, however, I highly doubt that anything story or character wise will change. Introducing new enemies does not count as a development y'all, just wanted to put that out here.

Tokyo Twist

This is the sequel to the brilliant Tokyo Ghoul and Tokyo Ghoul:Re was continuing this quality.
It started slow, build up at good pace, reached it's climax...
... and then ruined everything by twisting, the twisted twist.
Until the climax this manga was easily a 10/10. But afterwards it trashed the basic plot for the sake of twists. The pace changed too, from ever progressing MC to stalling to build up the next enemy.
Maybe it got too succesful and now entered it's milking stage.
Get off the ride while you can still preserve the good memories....

what once was a human society vs Ghoul society plot is now Good Artficial Ghouls vs Bad Artificial Ghouls, with no place for humans and natural Ghouls. Army of Zombies will join soon too, pushing humans and Ghouls further into the background.

You have been warned.

Rating: Until the climax 10/10, afterwards 2/10. will settle for 5/10 overall.
