This manga is only 3 chapters in and I'm not impressed. It's billed as a sequel to popular "Tokyo Ghoul" manga that seemed to have the rug yanked from under by the creator about a month ago; ending on one of the worst cliffhangers in recent memory.
The thing is, it's not really a sequel so much as it is a full on reboot. Since most of the main characters from the original are either dead, dying, or crippled; so far, only 2 prominent characters have shown up in any capacity of importance and the only one of those two that is central to the plot might as well be a completely different character. (If you're wondering who, it's Akira. Who's been stopped of all her grace and stoic badassery to play wise, mother hen to the new main character)
The opening panels feature Ayato and Hinami standing in a what appears to be the aftermath of a battle, and they're never heard from again. We're immediately dropped in the middle of the intro of new characters that are as cliche as they come (aloof "super cool" team leader, seemingly useless weakling, rabid tattooed rival, and amicable but naive commander). The series is almost unrecognizable. The CCG, which was almost unrepentant in the mass genocide of any and all ghouls is openly accepting of half-ghoul investigators (who have no problem consuming normal food btw).
Judging from the first few chapters, I'm lead to believe either the creator or his editor weren't really comfortable with how dark the series became, so they cheated by ending the original and time jumping into the sequel.
Most of it fan speculation, but there seems to be an undercurrent of there being a lot more going on under the surface than what is currently being shown.
Overall, I'd say pick it up if you're a new reader. Proceed with caution if you're a fan of the prequel. Don't expect immediate answers to the WTF closing panels of Tokyo Ghoul.
