Ugh

Why does someone with Track experience have some ambiguous super potential with cars. Why is she presented as being so awesome. Why couldn't she have slowly practiced and gotten better and sought out learning material. Anyway I'm not against someone learning quickly, I dislike the phrasing. I dislike that it was felt she couldn't just go learn.

Also the manga moves at a slow pace. It's written rather leisurely, and I guess there's no reason to not be leisurely. But I would expect some time jobs per chapter to move things along.
Also, it's needlessly girl centric in terms of opponents. Though at least she has guy friends.

The art is nice on the cars.

I'd rather read about Keiko Ihara. Maybe this manga should have been based on her then it wouldn't be so boring. This manga is boring and hard to get through and that about sums up my experience with it.

I remember a "racing queen" who got tired of shaking her *** infront of bunch of perverts got herself a car, and now she is in racing - and she ain't pushover either. Keiko Ihara google her.
This story is both beleivable and interesting.
And honestly, although I like Initial D, watching a girl trying herself in something that takes guts is way more exciting.

@revolutionofone, powershifting and clutchless shifting are two different things. Powershifting wears both clutch and the transmission more than normal shifting does. In clutchless shifting you need to match the rpm with the gears, and when matched corrently it doesn't wear the transmission more than normal shifting, and obviously, it saves the clutch.

@DawnFlower, but as stated before, clutchless shifting is possible. As for learning drifting like she did in the manga, is possible. It's not like she was good at it or anything. After that she has lots of trouble even in the basics. And considering how much she drives, she's far from being a genius.

@DustFox, they're both about street racing, but they're very different. How much different kinda manga can you make about touge racing?

I like the realistism of this manga, if you don't know anything about cars, racing or touge, don't talk like you're some kinda expert.

Quietly outshines the D

Personally, I like this series more than the rather overrated Initial D (in which the artist just didn't seem capable of evolving his art style on the personas). There's less excess of superfluous 'romantikku' and the characters seem more down to earth. More importantly for a racing manga, the author seems to *really* know something about racing techniques, and is willing to expand on them, rather than posing his characters to cover that bit up. It's far from perfect both in art or subject matter, but better than most in its genre.

DawnFlower,
It is possible to drive without the clutch. It's called powershifting, it is technically a clutchless shift. You rip it out of one gear and clutch into the next. It's a reduction of shift time. If done incorrectly, it will tear up synchros and differentials on normal cars. Your clutch will hardly be affected.

I don't mind the genius type, some people have a steeper learning curve. Apparently Ryouko has a natural ability therefore she picks up techniques and driving quicker than others.

It doesn't try to be Initial D at all. Initial D focuses on racing on a professional level whereas Over Rev focuses on street level racing. You cannot compare professional races and street races, two different leagues.

initial D wannabe

the manga is so-so
personally, I like stories where the lead is female. Especially if she's strong-willed, capable and such.

but this one, like dustfox said,
it wants to be initial D too much and failed big time.

things like... never driven before and drift after 1-2h of instruction?... driving without using the clutch? I don't know what to say. If someone is pro at driving please enlighten us, but to my limited knowledge, doing that - if possible would not only kill the engine and but the clutch will be gone fairly quickly as well.

the story, or the lack thereof, is mediocre at best - typical genius type who learn really quickly, then meet some old guy who at first seems insignificant then turn out to be some super elite dude.

take any shonen manga like naruto, bleach etc then sub in the chars and u'll get over rev

the races are extremely boring - the end

it been 2 years since the last scans. wakaba seem to be ok. about the story, since initial d is the only racing manga im interested in, im quite surprise that i found myself liking over rev.
the difference between over rev and initial d is the main char doesnt really have the skill from the start. and it does feel refreshing to have a female protaganist in racing manga.

Think Initial D

Yes, strange but true. Only differences between Over Rev and D:
* Protagonist starts with no driving experience
* Protagonist it a girl \o/
* Shorter races, or the focus is more on driving techniques than the actual race (read up to ch 52)

Long and short - if you liked Initial D, you'll like this. A worthwhile read.
