A dark religious journey that will stick with you

I have no idea why the manga is so overlook or why only a complete german translation exists but it is certainly worth the time of any fan of serious historical fiction. The story is very dark and mostly about human suffering but the journey to find oneself isn´t entirely pessimistic as it is a reflection on Buddhism at it´s core. The historical reality of the 15th century Japan is vividly portrayed, the art highly expressive and the protagonist is engaging.
I have to warn you though that this manga is for adults only and that a mass market should be turned of by the high amount of sexual violence and death so keep that in mind. If you liked comparable biographical series like the downright perfect Buddha (10/10) or the somewhat more action driven Vagabond (9/10) then read this even darker reflection too and it certainly made me curious to look up the historic details about the actual Ikkyu. Some of the themes and the raw art also reminded me of the older Kamui Gaiden (8,5/10) which is an imperfect classic.
