Description

Historie takes place in ancient Greece and follows the childhood and adult life of Eumenes, who would grow up to be the secretary and general to Alexander the Great.

Note: Won the 16th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize's Grand Prize in 2012. Won the 14th Japan Media Arts Festival Grand Prize for Manga.

Historie is without a doubt one of the best-written manga series ever, and it deserves all its praise. I can not find any cliches. The story is grand, ambitios, and captivating, with well rounded characters. It only gets interesting around chapter 10, and at the time of this review it left off in a total cliffhanger (chapter 62). Very excited to see what comes next, this is a series to keep your eye on.

On a very personal bias, I tried not to compare this to Iwaaki's previous work, Parasyte. But I compared them anyways, and I must say, even with Parasyte's few cliches, unanswered questions, and head-scratch moments that make little sense or feel out of place, I prefer Parasyte the inferior work. I'm just waiting for Historie to wow me so I can love it more.

I recommend Historie to anybody. A little warning about the gore, there's tons. Not gratuitous, but still. I hope this manga goes on past at least 20 volumes

Before I started reading this manga, I didn't think I would enjoy it as much as I did. The ratings were amazing but I'm not usually a fan of history. The mangaka really knows how to draw you into a story, it doesn't feel like I'm reading about history. This is a very addicting read and I hope more chapters come out soon.

Misconceptions

I would like to comment on the post below (dreamer00013's). You obviously think very unilaterally about Ancient Greece. Please keep in mind that Ancient Greek history spanned several centuries! Depending on both the time as well as the place the position of woman was completely different! For example at the same period of time Spartan women had power and freedom equal that to men, while their Athenian counterparts had a completely different life (while the two cities are not so far from each other!). In Minoan times Cretan women would wear dresses that had their breasts completely exposed! Another example of female empowerment can be read in the ancient Greek play "Lysistrata". Perikle's wife was probably one of the most powerful women in Athens, the 'woman behind the man' so to speak. Further please keep in mind that even in periods when we think women might not have had a very good position we find ourselves in a contradiction because women were vastly important figures in ceremonies, religion, temples etc.

Now I am not saying that the position of women in Ancient Greece was perfect. Lets face it, the position of woman was never good anywhere before the feminist movement. But before making sweeping generalizations please remember that her position in Ancient Greece changed through the centuries and depended highly on the place. As well, keep in mind that frankly, we do not know that much.

With 5 volumes out, it's becoming clear the autor's going to take huge liberties with history (at least, the way it's written down). Nevertheless his version is riveting and full of surprises, and without doubt his nonchalant handling of the protagonist certainly is unique and refreshing.

Eumenes is becoming one of the most interesting protagonists I've seen in a long time. Now, depending on how the author handles the aristocratic lifestyle of classical Greece, we may have a masterpiece in the making.

This is by far one of the best manga's i have ever read. To be quite honest, however, I almost did not read it. While I have always been interested in ancient Greece and I like historical fiction,I did not want to read the manga because it centered around real historical figures because of the inaccuracy it is most likely to have.
Because I was bored i thought i would read a chapter or two to kill some time and I ended up reading all the current chapters in one sitting. Any miss giving’s I had about using real people as main characters were swept away through this enticing story. I don't know enough about greek history to tell you the manga's flaws, but I know enough to tell that it has many correct historical facts which the mangaka explains better than any textbook or teacher I ever encountered.
I strongly suggest everyone to read this manga. You will not regret it.

Good, but not great

Since everyone else is only commenting on the positives, I'll make my review a little more pessimistic.

The art is underwhelming. It begins rather slowly (not unbearably slow), but really picks up after the first volume if you give it the time. The mangaka shoves a lot of gore into your face in the first few volumes but there is little to be found in some of the later ones.

I'm not sure why there are remarks the originality of the main character. He is far from the first character to ever use brains over brawn, especially with the recent popularity of characters like Lelouch and Yagami. The mangaka himself even constantly makes comparisons between Eumenes and Odysseus; however, unlike Lelouch, Light, Odysseus, or almost any other main character in a popular work of literature you can think of, Eumenes is flawless.

He isn't weak, short-tempered, arrogant, boring, antisocial, evil, bad with girls, or even too kind. The story is basically about what the perfect male specimen would do under the most unfortunate conditions possible, but no one seems to have a problem with this because it's almost impossible to dislike him.

Definitely one of the better mangas out, but far from the best.

This beast is beyond description

Historie.
The essence of Historie is too magnificent a beast to tame with my words. For me, to describe this ongoing masterpiece, would only tarnish its brilliance. Mark my words readers, the 230 votes for a ten is not a lie. You may not've gotten your cake (Portal reference) but, to a reader who's not blinded by their childhood or teenage wants; of action, fame, and glory for the former and of the same for the latter except with the lust for sex. To such a person who's open to the world I guarantee that this will be your pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Although to the average person, the rainbow's probably invisible and that they just happened to stumble upon a five-year-old box of brownies stashed in an obscure corner, and upon opening one package, discovers that each package is laden with a bar of 24 carrot gold. Yes, this series deserves more attention from the manga world and I also thought the manga would be crappy at first.

After reading it I was like a starving peasant standing in front of a colossal two-story mushroom made of pure gold—and edible too. I was baffled, no a better word would be astounded. It's alluring plot held me like a spell as I sated my hunger eating away the chapters. The only thing I hate is the time spent waiting for chapters. Someone mentioned that it's serialized in a monthly magazine so that might explain it. Whatever, patience is a virtue.

This manga is an addiction I tell you. Be prepared to pull an all-nighter reading it.

This is completely awesome. It's so fresh, so well-done, so interesting. I'm 23 years old so it's really hard to find mangas that aren't about adolescence drama, targeting 15 years old kids. The plot is so strong without relying only on sex or psychological dramas. It's so well-written, it just doesn't look like a manga
The art is very good, the action is so fine.
By far, superior to almost everything I've read. Go and read it. Try Viland Saga if you like it.

Worth your time

Happily, Hox has picked this one up, so I can enjoy following my favorite protagonist again. As other reviewers have attested, Eumenes is probably one of the most likable, rational main characters you’ll find in any manga. He shares with his contemporaries a compelling sort of wry, unencumbered worldliness, and Historie showcases well-paced, subtle storytelling with a hint of irreverence.

Edit: Even to someone with little knowledge of Macedonian history , the mangaka does seem to have taken quite a few liberties, presumably to fashion an entertaining story. In some cases, I would have preferred greater adherence to historical record, but who am I to quibble?

Great manga, really, i'm speachless. It's got history, which would be enough for me, and that's not all, it also covers so much more angles of society, different nationalities, interesting tales and the life of Eumenes.

Btw. i've been searching for like a few hours now, but i can't seem to find a way to contact HOX. Anybody know how i could do this ?
