why so much hate on the ending?

I wish the creator of Pearl Boy made a comment about the controversial "vague" ending in the final creator note because the ending really flew over readers heads when it comes to symbolism. (Even I was like okay I'm a bit confused about this seemingly bittersweet looking ending)

I dont think this work was perfect. But it did a good job in having us on the edge of our seats too many times.

SPOILERS AHEAD ONLY READ AFTER FINISHING
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
They are probably not dead. They got themself out of the water. Theres no way Dooshik the iron bull would not be able to get them out of some icy cold water.

During the very brief moment in the icy cold water, Jooha finally remembers Dooshik. Why? Because the moment in the ice water makes a call back to 1. The first time they are in water (Dooshik falling into the sea, Jooha saving him in S1) and a call back to 2. The hospital scene : when they remember that Dooshik saved him those years ago the speech bubble It's good to see you again. The reason why the final thing that is said in the ending is this, AND the reason it is in quotation marks.

No matter the endless trials, roadblocks, struggles they both go through (especially Jooha). From now on, everything is going to be alright and they will always find each other again, just as they "found each" other again this moment. After falling into the icy water.

Dooshik calling out to Jooha "hyung!", Jooha hearing that before falling into the icy water, Hints that this and them being in a body of water (just like back then with the sea) made Jooha probably regain his memory.

Them locking eyes underwater, the whole monologue of the sea not having paved roads, the waves, it was just so beautifully executed and I think it was actually a beautiful ending for two suffering people who went through a lot. It's only good from now on. That's my analysis of such an open ending. When they get out of the icy water, it's only happiness from now on because they found each other again (Jooha finally remembering Dooshik) and they both can be with each other again. For good this time.

JOOHA LOSING HIS MEMORY:
Why were fans sad that he lost his memory, and in turn could not remember Dooshik? The only sad thing was Jooha confusing Pilwon for Dooshik because his memory went only up to meeting Pilwon on the streets when he helped him pick up the clams that fell). For a character that suffered so much (I find too much, r*pe, too much suffering even up to the final episode) but the amnesia was a blessing and it's a testament to their relationship and how they are fated to be with each other. : why? Jooha forgets all those moments of r*pe, shitty memories of Pilwon, his mom etcetera. Also, even with amnesia: they fall in love again. Even with Jooha calling him mister now, and Dooshik calling him by his first name. They are fated to be with each other. No matter when comes their way (amnesia for example) and I find that to be a beautiful thing really. They can start new, a clean slate. (Well my theory either way is that Jooha remembers when they get out of the icy pond and he gets therapy and medication but!)

Just finished remaining eps of Pearl Boys. If there’re a list of stories that i like the characters more than the plot, PB is definitely one of them. Dooshik is funny and Jooha is cute. I enjoy their interactions and the romance between them, but the plot is so 🤦.

The MCs and their love are the only thing that keeps me reading till the end. Too much toxic and repeated sexual assault, especially when DS did that thing to the twins 🤦. No one is deserved to be r***, both JH or the other, and no excuses for his actions at the end. I mean his action pushed him to the jail and let that loony Pilwon threaten JH, ugh not smart move at all 🤦.

About the ending, it’s not bad, it’s just interrupted. With all those hard times for both JH and DS, they deserved at least a dozen of eps with fluffy and happiness 🤦. Especially when that loony is gone, and nothing can’t stop JH and DS enjoy their happiness now. They and us readers need happy things to erase all those horrible memories happened before 🤷. But only thing we got was an open ending, a cliffhanger like that. It’s really spoiled the mood and the rating 🤷

The art is very beautiful, as are the characters.
But is very sad, violent and hard.

SPOILER
I didn't like chapter 90 I cried.
I just wanted a happy ending for them.
Ends badly so sad

So I read Pearl Boy from the very beginning when Zoy was still the writer for it. While light and comical in the beginning, I didn't mind the tone shift into mafia/gang stuff when Zoy left. I love Mafia stories personally! So the tone shift wasn't bad.

And because it deals with mafia/gang stuff, I expected alot of violence and unsavory themes. Not excusing any of it or justifying it; but it made sense in the Underworld context. Eye for an Eye for gangs.

The reason I rated this lower is because of the ending.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Jooha loses his memory. I didn't mind that too much. However, what really upset me was that Jooha ran after a cat on a frozen lake and went under when the ice cracked. I assume that Dooshik dove into the freezing water to save him. And it's heavily implied that the two of them drown in this frozen lake. I normally don't mind somber endings but I would have rather they'd been shot by rival gang members. Keep the gang/mafia theme going but no. They just...drown under the ice of a frozen lake

I still love the story but the ending i feel alot of disappointment for.

Incredibly nerve wracking, exciting and exhilarating

I just find it incredibly nerve wracking, exciting and exhilarating to read. An art style where you can see the artist's progression is just as exciting as the art itself is just brutally detailed and beautiful at the same time. The development of the characters and the story was just wonderful. I only experienced something like this once on The Beast Must Die.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
At the end I don't know what to say, a little sad for Dooshik and Jooha. Though it might be better for Jooha not to remember anything but for Dooshik to leave all those horrible memories alone?

If there was a print edition I would buy it immediately and am already looking forward to the next work from the author.

One of the Best

Overall: This is one of those rare, deep, beautiful, extremely well done character arc comics. It's got great humor and "make you feel warm inside romance" to balance out the serious story arc and dark elements.

Getting Into It: The author (from as early as chapter 2 or 3) suggests that there is a dark side to the story and it does gradually happen. I see people who are shocked and disgruntled with some of the elements despite that they have been overtly or covertly shown the *entire* time. (If you're only there for the fluff and sex, this isnt for you). This author is *brilliant*. Her premise is weird AF- not going to lie-but she owns it and creates a masterpiece with it. The whole cast is well done, particularly the depth of the two main characters. The romance between the main characters is also deep, beautiful, evolving, and extremely well done. Tons of green flags as well as some big struggles. Later on in the comic, things start to get gradually darker (esp season 3+), but it'll take a fall for a lot of characters before the resolution everyone needs. It's painful but necessary.

[To those who think the author makes light of violence of any kind: you're not paying attention. (If you are into the enneagrams, dooshik is a 2w3 (which frequently mistyped as a 7), and he is an incredible example of a healthy 2 who disintegrates to an 8. It's tragic. It's painful. But I look forward to his incredible come back- this is character development at its finest. This may be difficult for some readers who only wanted fluff, but there are plenty of other comics if you're not looking for something complex and deep).]

I really loved these two, Dooshik and Jooha❤️ but I'm tired already of all of this toxicity, and seriously, once again sexual assault? Just finish this series if this is all what we get😭🙄 Maybe if Zoy hadn't left, everything would have been okay..🤔
Soo...it went back to the disgusting path... what was that for?! An another author's sick sexual fantasy...back and forward all the time, out of character behaviors, not consistent plot twists, everything out of nowhere, just to fit some sick author's ideas and drag the story...and now...we can see how there are no more ideas for pulling this shit, artstyle is not everything in the series! People are defending mostly only because they like the characters from the beginning, like always, justifying everything 'because'...
Don't get me wrong, I'm not against toxic plots, I'm truly open-minded, and there are toxic series which I truly like...but they are consistent series, this is the key...series should have both, artstyle and writing! It is these two that make it a series, not some artbook without content! People should have some standards, not enjoy every shit they get just because they see a pretty face or a sexy body! 🤦
And recent chapters only prove it, some shouldn't be "writing" the story... with all due respect, some people have sick minds, and 'author' of this one is an perfect example of that...she's trying to 'normalize' rape, no consequences... wasted potential
And let's be honest, it's obvious that Inking stuck to this series and will drag it out indefinitely, because it's all she has...she's already proven that she can't create characters and action alone, watching as she destroyed the ones that already existed in pearl boy...sad, and people totally hypnotized by artstyle cannot see the fact that...there is no consistent plot... pathetic
Finally the ending which is...the culmination of all the idiocy we've had so far, the laws of physics and logic...there's nothing here, and of course key themes from the beginning of the series still unresolved...since the author left, it can only be called an officially released inconsistent fanfic, I'm glad it's over, those characters didn't deserve such treatment...

Sudden genre change?

Ngl I really liked this manhwa at first, it was a manhwa about this poor boy that wanted to get his mom's restaurant back, he then met this sunshine seme who tries to rescue him from his toxic ex.
But then out of nowhere the manwha turned into this gang/mafia theme, it's like the author didn't know how to keep the story going so they had to turn to mafia stuff. And it's funny because this sudden turn of events happened around when Zoy (the writer) left.
The art is beautiful ngl tho some could argue that at first it looked kinda weird (I have to agree as well but on late seasons it looks good) but the way the story is going seems too sudden for me.

It takes some time to start, but the whole setting is important. Then the story starts rolling and damn, it’s a hell of a ride. I love it. The main couple is wonderful, the villain great, and the art gorgeous.

I hope the author will get better soon, depression sure isn’t fun… Gambatte!
