Starts like a Typical Shojo, Ending is Messed Up

I like how when I picked this up as a teen, it was a lot like Fruits Basket , but as it goes deeper into the volumes it becomes a tragedy lol. You have a mary-sue type girly girl who kinda is like a Tohru, but in a vampire setting. The headmaster is a typical shojo manga dad with an effeminate and silly personality and she has two love interests, one of which lives with her, kinda ya know, like Fruits Basket . But then everything goes to shit when you find out Zero is cursed and Kaname and Yuki are related.

Spoiler: and then everyone just dies lol. The headmaster, Zero etc.

Sh*tty Mary Sue

WTH! I like it at first, I LOVE the art the most. Yet, as the story progress, it becomes nonsense and stupid. Especially that main character, Yuki! She's wants Zero, but she wants Kaname too. Not only that, she also wants every men in this goddamn Mary Sue manga. All the characters in this turd, worship her like she's kind of a goddess. Yeah, a Mary Sue goddess!!

Seriously, the mangaka seems confused herself, like she didn't know what to do anymore as she stuck in her own creation and make the story more and more ridiculous with more and more Mary Sue main character. So much potential got waste. I used to adore Yuki, now for me she's just another ho who wants to build her own harem full of handsome non sparkling vampires.

Of what to say. Such beautiful and elegant drawing. Plot-twisting story. This manga (and its mangaka) never seem to stop amaze me. And you'll understand, as a reader/fan, once it's read.

Well, everyone have their bias in every story. Mine is the kind-hearted / gorgeous Kaname. I must admit I've misunderstood him along the way, but in the end he's still everyone's hero *o*

Heartwrenching and annoyingly long

The inner me is crying like a little child, without restraint.
The outta me is composed, I shed some tears.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Not because of the end events in itself but because of the missed time and the wasted time, the made promises and hopes that weren't fulfilled.
Don't expect an easy mushy manga with a clean happy end.

I had to start reading chapter summaries at the vk wikia too from ch~75 to ch~88 or something - actually the Sara story arc. Partly because of terrible translation skills but also because of mixed fast switching story lines, character swaps (even completely unimportant ones with lame side stories), dynamics and bubbles and thoughts that were not always clear from whom they were. What a mess. That mentioned story arc ruined the manga quite a lot anyway.

Until after the middle of the manga, let's say till ch60 or so, I liked it. Even when it noticeable lost appeal after the first story arc with Yuki at the school. With introducing the next crazy Pureblood Sara is went downhill fast. Her entire storyline started to bore me quickly until it was annoying and bothersome that I couldn't be arsed anymore to read all her pages...

I knew she will die anyway so why bother to drag it out so much?
The re-installation of the Night Class felt like a source for filling material.
The last 3-4 chapters were good again. Dramatic and tragic end. Bittersweet without the sweet.
Sometimes I like such ending (e.g. Code Geass style) mostly not. But here it was okay. I don't hate the end. The additional chapters 93.5 and 93.7 are kind of cute, touching and top off that particular ending.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Personally I would had hoped for a treatment and fresh energy for Kaname or Yuki also being turned into a human after the thousand years of waiting time. After all he was and remained her love and Kaname wouldn't have minded to spend more time with Yuki either.
Sacrificing her own life to turn slumbering Kaname into a human when she has two children is quite drastic. Poor Zero, he then has lost his love (and food source).

I didn't even mind who'd Yuki end up with as long as she firmly does so but when it looked like there is progress in the Kaname x Yuki department (after Kaname showed her his past... I totally had hope) he suddenly dropped her to fulfill his old agenda - what the...
Despite that about 10 chapters before all his worries were to lose Yuki beside him some day and 50 chapters before all his plotting was to hopefully end up with her.
I didn't like how it turned out with him. It was like those 10 years were a waste. He could have started his plan way sooner and left Yuki with Zero whom he built up to a great weapon and shield for her.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
First part, he admitted near the end, was a wrong decision on his part. He had planed to start his old plan after Yuki was brought to Kaien Cross. But the idea of still being near her and the possibility to become even closer later let him change his mind.

At the end it was a dream for him, a short lasting dream of a 'what if...' with Yuki, when he woke himself up from it to follow his path that he dropped thousands of years ago. Alone.

Regarding the brother sister issue:
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Purebloods are called like that because they have never intermingled with humans. As the nature of a Pureblood either seems to be not to care to care too much (in an aggressive manner) and since there weren't many of them to begin with it was not uncommon that they married within the close family. Like brother and sister.

Regarding Kaname in that issue:
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Kaname is introduced as the son of Yuri and Haruka Kuran which is only half true. It is later revealed that he was in fact a dried up mummy in a coffin for thousands of years in slumber. That thing in the coffin was an ancestor of the Kuran clan, he was _the_ ancestor. The first Kuran vampire at all from 10.000 years ago.
Someone wanted his power and to gain it he had to revive him just to devour him afterwards. The reviving worked but Kaname mummy was too strong and overcame his attacker. To avoid the severe blood thirst after that many years in slumber he turned himself into an innocent baby with sealed memory that leaked later when he was a larger child... he was rised by the siblings as their own child Kaname.

So, this is kind of a spoiler, but also a warning to those who usually love Hino's work: incest, incest, incest, oh, and incest (I am sorry if I offend anyone). It started off strong, became a little wobbly, then went completely down hill around the middle. I normally love her work, but not this. It started to feel really rushed, and I was kind of hoping the incest thing would go away, but it didn't. =( Maybe her next work will be better. =(

Not Without Flaws, But Quite Gripping

The artwork is, hands down, gorgeous. The females are beautiful and the males are generally the dark, sexy type. Goodness gracious. The attention to detail and the gray tones really helps to enhance the dark atmosphere of the story.

The plot is a compelling read, but it does get confusing. Character development is limited and character dynamics, especially the main love triangle, I found hard to understand because it lacked a good foundation.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Many seem to agree that once Yuuki learns that she is a vampire, the story takes a turn for the worse. And I do agree, but I will say that I didn't hate the ending as much as others do. The extra chapter 93.5 definitely improved it though.

TL;DR I would read it because of its beautiful artwork and interesting plot, but I think that it'll cause a lot of frustration from readers. It was only after I read chapter summaries did I really appreciate the story, and I typically take that as a bad sign of an author's storytelling abilities. This story has all the right tools, intriguing concepts and great art, but its poor execution turns it into a rather wasted opportunity.

My Favorite

Vampire Knight has been my favorite manga franchise for a very long time and will probably always hold a special place in my heart. In a way it's a guilty pleasure - I'm aware of how cheesy the dialogue can get, and don't get me started about that train wreck of a second half. And yet, as someone who grew up with the characters, their antics and struggles, and who has never before or since seen more detailed and gorgeous art work, Vampire Knight is going to be hard for any other series to beat, in my book. Give it a try, and even if you only get through the first half, I think you'll find that it was interesting to read and beautiful to look at.

I had to look at wiki for chapter summaries and character guides because there was definitely confusion going on and at some points I got confused on who was who.
The ending- completely not satisfied. I have looked at many English sites and I just see fans unhappy with the ending.
Also, when there was fighting going on with the orginal parent Isaya took Yuki away and was going to make her human? So why couldn't he sacrifice himself instead of Kaname? Maybe I'm just confused and need to re-read. I'll update if I can find the chapter I'm talking about.

Yea, UGH.

One thing: The f**king Melodrama I can't stand it. PERIOD. I've seen so many melodramas before, despite my general distaste for them. But by god, Vampire Knight is a cut above all the rest. Most of the emotional conflicts never made sense to me, and the way the characters dealt with these conflicts even more so.

Also, I am very disappointed because I actually liked it in the beginning and saw that it had so much potential for a decent soap opera story. But no, it spiraled down into a convoluted mess that made ill use of its extensive cast.

Oh yeah, the Love Triangle is flat out ridiculous. The dynamics of their relationship felt so weird to me. Also, at least choose a goddamn man Yuki! Who the hell would be in love with two men at the same time?! (You could love, yes, but NOT be IN LOVE with both). Jesus, at least Bella Swan chose ONE guy. Yuki didn't, and that really disgusted me to an extent. Despite being boring characters IMO, I actually fell some sort of pity for both Kaname and Zero.

On the flip side though, this manga has some good qualities, although these didn't raise my opinion of the series at all.

Art is gorgeous:: simply put, Vampire Knight has one of the most aesthetically pleasing art I have ever seen in shoujo manga. I could just shut my brain off, miss all the annoying plot going on and only admire the beauty of the pages.

Dark portrayal of Vampires:: Well yeah, in my own opinion, the manga's portrayal of the vampire is quite dark and twisted: the way I like. But of course, this wasn't as consistent as it should've been.

OKay, enough of my rant. All in all, Vampire Knight was a glaring disappointment. Although I disliked it very much, it wasn't a total failure. It may be turned me off but of course it's understandable that others would like it.

I heard from rumors that vampire knight is being criticized. I'm one of those person critizing vampire knight.
The art style is good as the story goes far
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
I started hating it when Yuki falls in love with Kaname as if that's her brother... Incest ...-.- It's better if Yuki would ended up with Zero instead of Kaname... The most hated part When Yuki had children with 2 guys.... ugh Yuki can't live without a man..That's why many people criticizes vampire knight and I'm one of them...If I have given a chance to change this story Yuki will end up with Zero
